We love the rinky dinky boat as we call it she is our casino last minute getaway and we loosing her but I think perhaps it has something to do with Jacksonville going to dredge the canal so that in the future larger ships can get under the bridge. I can't see Carnival totally pulling out of Jax. Its possible we could get another ship but if they dredging the canal no ship can pass through.

From what I've read, it's only for a few months while they reshuffle some ships around.

Personally, I think it's great that Carnival has shown a commitment to keeping a ship in San Juan year round instead of abandoning or turning it into a seasonal port like others.

Is the Fascination the nicest ship? Absolutely not. But on a port intensive itinerary, it will be fine, at least for a few months.

I'm very worried because I'm a 100% Carnival Fan!! and they fix the Carnival name here in San Juan with the Valor. Now people here will be very up set.. and we will see how our Carnival sales will go down (I'm a TA)

Hi! I'm from Mayaguez. [emoji3]

I completely understand. Having been born and raised in the island, all of my first cruises were out of San Juan, so I've seen the good and the bad come and go. I remember when Cunard, Costa, NCL, Royal, Carnival, Chandris (pre-Celebrity) all had ships homeported in San Juan. On any given Saturday or Sunday, there would be 6 or 7 ships departing. It's a bit sad to see how things have changed and how some cruise lines have abandoned San Juan over the years (should we blame it on the IVA? [emoji23]) but I'm hopeful that things will turn around.

I was very happy to see the Liberty going to San Juan (my favorite Carnival ship and truly a step above), so I was disappointed to see that she won't be there long. On a positive note, NCL will start sailing out of San Juan next year! They are sending the Gem to do 7 night cruises and the itineraries look attractive! Hopefully that will help you boost your sales. [emoji106]

Well, a couple of problems here. First, dredging and the bridge have nothing in common. Dredging will allow larger ships that have deeper drafts into the river. However, dredging will not lower a ship to allow a taller ship to pass under a bridge. Since a cruise ship does not change it's "cargo" weight by much, the ship's draft and air draft don't change.

Secondly, you're under the misconception that dredging will shut the river down completely? Nothing further from the truth. Dredging operations go on every day in many ports around the world, with minimal impact on vessel traffic. At most, two way traffic is limited or eliminated (requiring pilots to arrange inbound and outbound sailing times), or the dredge will move during times of high traffic density.

That route is such a gem! I don't understand why they'd put an old clunker down there. I hope to do this itinerary again in the future, but not on a Fantasy class ship. Not without a balcony. Glad to see RC and NCL options there as well.

So there's no balconies on the Fascination?? She was my first cruise but we stayed in an inside. Never noticed. I have no issue with fantasy class ships. Some of them have nice waterworks (Sensation for one) and balconies (Sensation again). But to put a fantasy class ship with no balconies on that port intensive cruise with those great views doesn't make sense. I think people will dislike that more than it being an older, smaller ship.

Celebrity also has ships out of SJ. I cruised the Summit with its indoor Thalasso pool in Jan 2014.

If the this is true, I will not be sailing out of San Juan after 2016. Balconies are a must for the southern carribean cruises. Fascination is so underwhelming for that itinerary.

I would be more than surprised if they do not have a Conquest class ship there and this is a temporary measure.

I stayed in a balcony room when I cruised on the Fascination! I have no complaints about her. Is the the newest and biggest ship? No...but we had a great time on her!

We used to have 2 Carnival ships here (Fascination ( my first cruise with Carnival) and Inspiration)

but after having Destiny, Victory, Valor and Liberty

going back to such a small ships its no good for us here having RCCL with 2 ships and Celebrity, its a NO NO NO for Carnival... Bad... Bad!!

I can understand exactly what you mean....for us, if we take the ship out of Jax it never is our main cruise for the year, too small, not much on it and no steakhouse either. Its a great ship for us to do a last minute gambling cruise just to get away to do that instead of going to Tampa Hard Rock or Vegas.

hope you said its true!! we need a big ship here to compete with ( the others) LOL

They'll still have the Liberty there as well (another Conquest class) so it looks like they will have two ships there unless they are pulling the Liberty out after only a year being there.
