One Night Cruise

I’m considering booking a one night cruise from Seattle to Vancouver and then taking another cruise line down the coast. What can I expect during my cruise? Is everything open onboard the ship dining, entertainment, etc.? Will there be happy hour?

Just remember that a repositioning (one night cruise - 4 night cruise) is not the same as a regular cruise.

I saw the difference in the menus on the Westerdam when the repositioning began. Not a big deal as we had already booked a couple of Pinnacles, but there is no question that the "vibe"is different.

Yes -- everything will be open.

There will be a show.

You can count on Happy Hour.

Thanks. I take it there will be no formal night and I can wear jeans to the dining room?

No Gala (aka formal) nights on repositioning cruises. Yes, you can wear jeans as long as they look nice (no holes,etc.).

Thanks. This will be my 2nd Holland cruise and first time taking a one night cruise, so I didn't know what to expect.

I did a one nighter between Vancouver and Seattle prior to a 14 day Alaska cruise two years ago. It will definitely be Smart Casual although you might see some people dressed up (those appeared to be the ones who were going all out, like a fancy date, for their one night cruise). The dinner menu will probably not be all that impressive, at least, I found it just okay. There were many young people/families. We didn't notice any unruliness or anything like that but we did not go to the Lido or pool areas.

I can't remember if we had a Happy Hour. Hopefully, you'll have it.

Enjoy your cruises!

Agree with Kazu.

The vibe is "different", that's for sure.

One cruise we did incorporated a one nighter and it was mayhem in the DR, loud, pax walking around during dinner..... Unlike anything we had experienced on HAL.

The waiters called the one-nighters "casino cruisers", just meaning boisterous and loud.

The second night was back to normal (for HAL) and a pleasure.

I've been on a lot of HAL cruises, short and long, and have never seen Happy Hour on embarkation day.
I looked at a few On Locations, and found a HH from 8:30 to 9:30 on the Eurodam out of Copenhagen ... but I agree that it's not usual.

Keep in mind that a one night cruise is different in that there are most certainly only a few people embarking that day. Most pax would be intransit. When I did mine, there were only about 100 people embarking IIRC. Granted, the ship probably didn't sail full that night but there were many more than 100 people there. For them, it was just another port call and there might have been a Happy Hour that day. The real changeover was the following day in Seattle.

Different vibe for sure! We were on a longer South Pacific cruise last April with a stop at the end in Vancouver then on to Victoria and Seattle. The 2-day Vancouver to Seattle was quite special. I am not saying anything bad about the 2-day sailing nor should anyone try to read anything into my statement, but here goes "There were more Asians on that cruise than on our cruise in Asia onboard a Princess ship a few years ago" ;)

Yes, we know many Asians from the Vancouver area who love the short Pacific Coast cruises. They tend not to want longer that 5 days and go on all the lines to get a feel for the differences.

They seem to prefer Princess overall.

There was at our San Diego turn around port. The bulk of the ship was in transit. I think about 400 got on for the repositioning at that port.

We find the 4 day repo cruises pretty interesting  I imagine the one days are, too :) I would love to do one sometime!

Hmmm... I'll have to look into this Seattle to Victoria thing. Could do it one-way and take the Victoria Clipper back to Seattle. Maybe spend a night in Victoria too.

As for no Gala night on repos... what about Transatlantic repos? Those can be a couple weeks long. Time enough for three on our RCCL TAs.

The repos that they are talking about here are the one night, two or four night sailings, along the Pacific Coast. At the end of a long cruise when some people disembark in San Diego and Vancouver. HAL knows better than to do a formal night for those cruises.

A different repositioning than say a Transatlantic which is longer.

On the Transatlantics (and Transpacifics), there are indeed Gala nights. They might be a repositioning (from continent to continent),but they are full blown cruises with all of the regular amenities ;)

I cannot imagine wanting a one day cruise. You would be spending as much time in getting to the port, waiting in line, boarding, finding stateroom, unpacking then repacking (if only pajamas and toothbrush), and then debarking --- I'd rather spend the day with my dentist.

I agree, except for the dentist part ;)

We've done one one-nighter but it was years ago when we hadn't been cruising long. Never again.

We do enjoy the 3-4 day coastals and extend the vacation post-cruise. We can drive to Vancouver and Seattle easily.

We have a 7-day Vancouver-Vancouver booked next month with Celebrity. Really wish HAL had something similar.

My daughter and I will be doing a one nighter from Seattle to Vancover this September on the Amsterdam.

Then we will do a 5 night pacific coastal on NCL. We are really looking forward to our vacation and checking out the Amsterdam.

We are also doing the same thing. Sailing 1 night on the Maasdam and then 5 nights on NCL Jewel. The 1 night cruise is cheaper than a hotel in Vancouver.
