Rare vacationlover_mn Posted September 28, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I realize that alaskan cruising is coming to an end this year. However, I was wondering... If anyone just got their new iPhone 8 and are spending some time in Alaska right now... How good of a job does it do catching wildlife/glacier pictures? I'm trying to decide if I will need to get a camera, in addition to my phone (I'll be getting an 8 or X). I don't need photographer quality pictures, but I also don't want the shutterspeed/lighting to be so bad that I never get a good shot of a whale/bear/etc. Thanks! alwaysfrantic Posted September 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2017 You can't even pre-order until Oct. 27 with delivery in November. I got great shots with my 7+.
Beachiekeen Posted September 28, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I have my 8 already (It's the X that you preorder in October). I had a 6S in Alaska and hubby had the 7S Plus and his pics were way better than mine. However, I also had an ancient point and shoot and for stuff like catching whales, I personally thought it worked better than my phone. Plus I worried about getting my phone wet (but the new ones are all waterproof so that is nice). The other good thing about a point and shoot is that I could use one hand so I could take pictures as I was walking and didn't have to worry about my phone going overboard--trying to use my husband's bigger phone was bothersome for me. I love having an actual camera, albeit a cheap one and will never completely give it up. My dream would have been to have a great camera in Alaska. I'm fine with ours but it would have been better to have a nice one. If we ever go again, I think I will invest in a nice one and take a class to learn how to use it. Rare Coral Posted September 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I would want a real camera just purely for the zoom. Don't skimp.
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 28, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I would bring both so I would purchase a camera in addition to bringing your iPhone. Keith
Cruise_More_Often Posted September 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 29, 2017 Alaska is one place you really want a zoom. Wildlife rarely pops up right next to you. There are discussions about cell phone cameras, bridge cameras and DSLRs on the Photo and Camera Discussion Board here on CC: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=
Herfnerd Posted September 29, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 29, 2017 While my iPhone was fine while we were in front of the glaciers in Glacier Bay, my travel zoom camera was used a lot for its 30x zoom Sent from my iPad using Forums
SightCRR Posted October 6, 2017 #8 Share Posted October 6, 2017 I like my Sony 50x bridge camera for slower moving animals and glaciers but our best whale shots came from grandson's iphone 6 when the guide said keep looking there and he started shooting video. Then we made stills and zoomed as needed. I missed the whole whale breach.

Mrs.Gosse Posted October 6, 2017 #10 Share Posted October 6, 2017 I might consider the Caribbean without my camera but not Alaska. And you will see LOTS of people with actual cameras. I love being able to zoom in on the details of the glaciers and landscape. We went to the Kroschel Wildlife refuge in Skagway and I got good pictures on my phone bit incredible ones in great detail with my camera. zqvol Posted October 8, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 8, 2017 If you want really good wild life pictures you need to get a camera, not a phone. While the new phones are good, you simply do not have the optical zoom that you want in a phone.
Eaches Posted October 8, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 8, 2017 I use both a I phone 8 plus and Nikon with a telephoto lens . It all depends on where and if I have the space for a 35mm Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Cruise_More_Often Posted October 20, 2017 #17 Share Posted October 20, 2017 CruiseMoreOften- which phone do you have?? Sent from my iPhone using Forums I upgraded to the Samsung Gallaxy S8 Plus phone a couple of months ago. However, when in Alaska, I take my Panasonic Lumix bridge camera (24-400) for the zoom.
