Age requirements confusion?

Post #1 the OP says they noticed they had put their age in wrong. Post #3 the OP says they put it in right. Someone was bored and decided to make a fake post.

This is incorrect. The OP clearly states she put in her CORRECT age & computer system upped to an older age. NOT of her doing.

Hello everyone. Thanks for all your replies. Yes, this is real lol, and I am not making the post for fun (really isn't that fun either). I did put my age right, and because I am paranoid, I remember checking absolutely everything before I clicked booked if all my information was right. Then I went to go change my password as I wanted my guest #2 to share the account with me is where I noticed the years were sent back by 3. I tried to correctly put it back to my original age and I noticed the calendar wouldn't go any further forward. I first suspected that maybe the website's calendar thing is broken, but it didn't seem like it. So, off a whim (and thank god I did it within 24hrs), I looked if there was an age requirement for some reason, and there was. Thats when the panic set in. I'm from Canada, so after your 18+, you are considered an adult and you can do anything any other adult can, but I guess with cruises if you are between 18-20, you are considered a "Young Adult." So I call the help line, and after 40 min on hold, the agent hung up after a couple of words. Then again, I waited a long time on the phone and I got an agent. I got my refund because I called a few hours after booking it, and through their history, they saw that I had put I was 20 years old. They were confused as why I could book it if I put my age as 20. So then after that, I cancelled my flight and took a deep breath of relief accompanied by sadness of not going to experience cruising until after next year (just had my birthday a couple of months ago). What is weird is that some of you guys can't think that I can put my phone down on speaker with their annoying waiting music on, and go on my laptop to type this post. It's very easy lol. I looked up after I got mine cancelled, and a few cruise lines allow unaccompanied 18+ year olds on their cruises. I still do not understand the age requirements. It would make sense if ONLY 21+ are allowed, but minors are allowed with adults accompanying them. I am a very independent person, so this came to as a big shocker.

I agree with you how aggravating this is for you. My first cruise, which was a VERY long time ago .... 1982, I was 19. IF there was an age limit, I was able to go because the woman at work who organized our group for the cruise was 'of age' according to the cruise line's policy.

VERY glad you got this straightened out fast!

But I did want to comment on your final "argument" about the fact that they allow minors with adults accompanying them.

Just because they allow a 7 year old with an adult doesn't mean they do (or should) allow an unaccompanied 7 year old

Yes, that's silly, but it makes the point. They don't have to allow ONLY those over 21 in order to allow families, etc.

But at least you kept at it and got it solved.

Time for you to explore other cruise lines (if there are some where you can cruise "now"), or make reservations for next year... and then have a great time planning!

glad to hear you got your refund!

i may be wrong but I believe the "over 21" requirement is true on many cruiselines, not just NCL.

It is true on all mass marketed lines and for good reasons. Ok, the OP still claims she typed everything correctly and that may be true. She says she is independent and responsible which probably is true but when she says she doesn't understand the age policy that has little to do with anything. It makes no difference whether she does or does not. The policy is the policy and many times we have to accept things we do not understand.

Glad it worked out for you, and that you researched and found some lines that allow 18+ to book. Enjoy whatever cruise you decide to go on!

I wish the OP had told us which lines allow 18-20 year olds to cruise without someone 21 with them. I know none of the mass marketed lines do unless they have changed in the past month or so. there are some luxury lines that will allow 18 plus to cruise without an adult in the cabin, but none of the basic lines will. I think Oceania is one that does. So do some of the smaller lines, but they are very pricey. the others that might allow it are not the lines that come to most minds.

Yes, all I was trying to say is that if the whole boat is 21+, then I could see the reasoning (no need to ID certain people for alcohol or casino), but the thing is that there are minors around anyways, so why does it matter if two 20 year olds come (who choose willingly not to drink anyway). Is it a safety concern? I was just very confused because I have been all around the world alone (or sometimes with my 20 year old friend), but I can't go on a cruise where there is a lot more safety and regulations.

For the cruise, every person under 21 has an adult 21 or older who is responsible for the person under 21.

A parental consent doesn't work since the parent isn't onboard.

The lowest minimum age requirement for any cruise line is 18. The following cruise lines require that at least one person in each cabin is 18 or older: Clipper, Cruise West, Cunard, Oceania, Orient Lines, Peter Deilmann, Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, SeaDream, Star Clippers, Uniworld, and Windjammer.

The following cruise lines require that either 1) All passengers in a cabin must be 18 or older, or 2) If anyone in the cabin is younger than 18 years old, someone in the cabin must be 21 or older: Clipper, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Silversea and Viking River Cruises.

yes, I looked it up as this keeps changing, but you can see basic mass marketed lines to not allow anyone to sail without someone 21 or older the the cabin. The lines that do are either so upscale that most young people would not even want to sail them or they are small, off the wall lines.

OP so glad you got a refund and I agree with you that 18 should be the minimum age. I am guessing that too many problems with "spring break" crowds age 18-20 have led to this policy on the cruises lines that have it. I am stunned that the booking engines don't check the age requirement.

There is at least one "error" on the site:

'

Carnival, Clipper, Costa, Cruise West, Crystal, Cunard, Delta Queen, Disney, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Orient, Peter Deilmann, Princess, Seabourn, SeaDream, Silversea, Star Clippers, Uniworld, Viking River Cruises, Windjammer and Windstar require passengers to be at least 21 to consume any type of alcohol.'

NCL allow follow does the same as

Celebrity and Royal Caribbean and so offer beer and wine to passengers over 18. The rules apply when sailing in Europe.
