MSC strikes again

The US website says "The Company reserves the right to transfer the Passenger from one cabin to another and may adjust the Fare accordingly." And the brochure says "MSC Cruises also reserves the right to change your stateroom at anytime. New assigned stateroom will be of equal or better value."

In other words, strictly speaking, it could even happen in the middle of your cruise. With some fares they specifically warn that this is a possibility. For example the "Smart Deals" in the German market: "Ein eventueller Kabinenwechsel während der Fahrt ist vorbehalten." [We reserve the right to change your cabin during the trip.]

So you can be paid in full, they "upgrade" the cabin, and now you owe more???

Upgrades are usually free, they could say upgrade you from Fantastica to Aurea, you get the Aurea cabin but not the perks that go with it. The same goes for the others ie if you were Upgraded to the YC.

Perhaps theoretically - but it hasn't been anybody's experience to date or I'm sure it would have been posted on the forum here before now. " ............... may adjust the Fare accordingly" would more likely to be down than up as I can't see how any company can enforce extra payment for a product not required by the consumer.

I've had 2 upgrades which haven't cost me anything extra :)

Dave ................... just seen your post as I was uploading. I'd love to know what perks you don't get in YC if upgraded  I get how perks can be withheld in other situations ie priority boarding when in Aurea, room service charged if Bella is original level booked, etc.

Bea ... I was thinking more of the included drink package ... :)

Jeez ..................... how awful would it be to head into the Top Sail Lounge and be refused a drink on that basis. If that's the case, how would having wine served (or not) in the YC restaurant work  (unless you mean the withholding of the package to cover all other areas). Priority boarding couldn't be withheld as you have to be escorted to YC so the only perk that I can see that could be removed, apart from your guess, is access to the minibar in the cabin. I could certainly live with that were I given a free upgrade to YC :D

Bea ... If moving someone from any of the other packages to the YC and they get everything that goes with it, why should someone in a Bella moved to Fantastica or Aurea not get their perks ?

Same thing.

I agree with what you're saying, Dave. I'm just trying to figure how perks could be withheld in YC - priority boarding, access to private pool, dedicated restaurant, TSL etc. It's easier to withhold the perks in other areas of the ship, but not in YC.

Just to update what's happening, I received a call from the lady I book with at MSC today. Supposedly, after much prodding from her and her supervisor, they are going to put me back into the cabin I originally booked. Their explanation was that the inventory department was allocating cabins for the fourteen night sailing and they took that particular cabin for a two week booking. There seems to be some disconnect between inventory and sales. I have not yet gotten a confirmation of this, but if MSC makes it right, I will be happy. I will however definitely be closely monitoring my bookings with them from now on.

This is true on ALL cruises lines. Surely, someone of you have known someone (or heard of someone) who has experienced an issue with a stateroom ... plumbing ... heating ... A/C (something!). If the issue can't be fixed, cruise lines can move you to a new stateroom (where available). On the flip side, you can be moved if an issue is not prevalent in your stateroom, but may impact your stateroom (ie: plumbing issue above, or near your stateroom; electrical or HVAC issue on the same circuit as your stateroom).

Fingers crossed RosieRoo - hope it works out.

I am happy to report that MSC has made good on their promise and put me back in my original cabin. Restores my faith in their customer service, at least until they move me again :p. You can bet I will be keeping an eye out from now on.

Thank you all for your comments/support. Seems this issue has ended well after all.

Yeah I agree with you on that but they then should not block the others, they gave the upgrade so you should get what comes with it or non at all !

If someone gets upgraded to a better cabin and don't get some of the other perks they should still be happy about the "free upgrade" to the better cabin. If they want some of the other perks they can pay to get some of them i.e. drinks package.

Would you rather see the better cabins sail empty or have someone occupy them? I know what I would prefer.

The thread is not really helpful to anyone. Good luck to those who get upgraded and are happy with it!

The original post was about MSC taking away a booked cabin and replacing it with a guarantee. As such it was helpful to me to read other people's experiences with this since I had never had it happen to me in over 60 previous cruises on other cruise lines. Luckily MSC resolved the issue and it's good to know that they were willing to do the right thing.
