Rare Turtles06 Posted September 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2018 I’m on the Zuiderdam right now; we were scheduled to dock in St. John’s, Newfoundland, this morning at 11am. At 8:15am, the Captain announced that two hours earlier, we had turned around per the Canadian Coast Guard to participate in the search for a person overboard from another vessel, and that we were still about two hours away from the scene. It is sunny out, the seas are relatively calm, but the air temperature is in the 50s and these are cold waters. My prayers for that person. zelker Posted September 9, 2018 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2018 We’re on board as well and wondered why the sun was shining on the starboard side when we woke up. So the Captain didn’t specify what kind or size of ship this happened on, just said the call came at 615 and we were about 60 nm from the area. We’re assuming it wasn’t someone from the Zuiderdam although from the route map on the TV we do seem to be retracing our own route. He had the pedal to the metal at 21 knots but feels like we’re slowing down. Saying prayers that it’s a rescue, not a recovery.
Rare kazu Posted September 9, 2018 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2018 So sad :(. Sorry to hear this. Those are VERY cold waters. I fear that hypothermia would set in very quickly. Prayers indeed for that person.
zelker Posted September 9, 2018 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) Captain is on PA just now... still about 20 minutes to last known location of this person. He said there is another ship out here with us (maybe AIDALuna, who is scheduled for St. John’s today, too but we haven’t seen her yet) as well as a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft. We will be doing parallel sweeps as part of protocol. Edited September 9, 2018 by zelker
Rare *Miss G* Posted September 9, 2018 #6 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Oh how sad... and heartening too. An entire cruise ship has turned around to help in the rescue. It shows there is hope for mankind. I’m thinking the most likely scenario is a fishing boat maybe?
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 9, 2018 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Sorry to hear this. Prayers for the person and his/her family. Please keep us updated.
zelker Posted September 9, 2018 #8 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Latest update - only vessel we see is AIDALuna who is searching opposite us. In the air we’ve got a fixed wing jet plus two helicopters. Small white caps now plus glaring sun definitely make it harder to spot things on the surface. We still don’t know from what vessel this person went missing.
Flensburg Posted September 9, 2018 #9 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Yes someone is missing at Aida Luna, a german cruise ship. A quite known VIP jumped overboard this morning, very big news in Germany... :-( Gesendet von iPhone mit Tapatalk

sevenseasnomad Posted September 9, 2018 #12 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Very sad. Since no one has posted from Zuiderdam for a while, I wonder if the ship is still searching or has resumed her planned itinerary.
zelker Posted September 9, 2018 #13 Share Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) Yes, we’re still searching. Thanks for posting the link to the article ... very sad. He was so young. Edited September 9, 2018 by zelker
Rare Turtles06 Posted September 9, 2018 Author #14 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Very sad. Since no one has posted from Zuiderdam for a while, I wonder if the ship is still searching or has resumed her planned itinerary. We began the search pattern at 10:15am local time and are still searching (11:30am), as is the AIDA Luna. I haven’t seen the helicopter or plane in a while, but they may be in a different grid. FYI, you can copy and paste the text from the German article into google translate to read about the young man. Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

zelker Posted September 9, 2018 #17 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Captain just confirmed that the person is missing from the AIDALuna, at the moment it’s just us and them out here continuing to search, and that the aircraft have all gone back to refuel and will rejoin us out here shortly. We have not been released by the Coast Guard yet and he doesn’t know anything further.

No he is not found yet. Many people make extreme jokes about him, as there are many haters that don‘t like him. He has been mobbed a lot, very sad... Rare Turtles06 Posted September 9, 2018 Author #21 Share Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) Unless it’s the middle of the night, the internet on board the Zuiderdam has been so slow on most days as to be nearly useless or at least exceedingly frustrating. Here’s a story in English about the missing passenger. https://news.sky.com/story/daniel-kueblboeck-german-star-missing-after-falling-from-a-cruise-ship-11493979 Edited September 9, 2018 by Turtles06

Rare ski ww Posted September 9, 2018 #23 Share Posted September 9, 2018 Can't imagine what would make somebody jump overboard, hard way to go. Hope they do find him in time.

Rare Turtles06 Posted September 9, 2018 Author #25 Share Posted September 9, 2018 It’s 2:10 PM local time. We are still in the search pattern and have passed very close by the AIDA Luna several times as she executes her own search. It’s incredibly sad.
