Thank you for posting this.

We are currently in Australia heading to Papua New Guinea and are scheduled to sail on the Encore on 3/6.

Hopefully everyone is well and the ship did not suffer any great (if any) damage. Anxiously awaiting any news.

Not sure what you think you saw, but it is 9:15 pm local time and I am on the Encore and we are sitting here at the pier. We are awaiting some kind of word from the Captain about next steps.

Looks like this information is wrong then

Current position of M/S Seabourn Encore: Under way from Timaru to Akaroa

  • Departure was 3 hrs 50 min ago. (at 18:00 h local time)
  • Arrival will be in 9 hrs 10 min. (at 07:00 h local time)
  • Traveled distance since Timaru: 24.84 nm (46.00 km)
  • Remaining distance to Akaroa: 62.59 nm (115.92 km)
  • Traveled distance since Sydney: 2,291.51 nm (4,243.87 km)

That website isn't real time. It uses scheduled departure and arrival times to proportionally allocate the distance over time and estimate where a ship might be. Totally useless therefore when there's a change.

Thank you for the update.

I assume everyone onboard is OK?

If you can, kindly keep us informed about any updates on the Encore and any changes in the itinerary/schedules (if applicable).

Also, if any repairs to the ship are necessary.

Thank you.

The only place Encore is headed tonight is to a different dock in Timaru due to damage the dock sustained when the moorings broke loose in a sudden ferocious windstorm. Thankfully no one was injured. It was a few hours before the winds died down enough for tugs to be able to safely push her back to the dock. A decision will be made in the morning as to when we sail and whether we go to Akaroa or proceed directly to Wellington.

Yes, the ship is intact (although slightly dented and smudged where the hit took place) and everyone on board is fine (although it might be that a few crew members are not feeling so great about everything). Anyway, the Captain said that there would need to be lots of inspections, reviews, assessments from insurance folks, and so on. So at this point, we know that will take place in the morning and as above, we might end up with an afternoon in the next port (although all the excursions will be refunded) or if we will just sail on to Wellington and make it a total sea day. We still have not received the Program for tomorrow, but the CD said we will proceed as if a sea day.

Well, surprise, surprise, surprise! Yes, indeed we are anchored off the coast of Akaroa (near Christchurch). We were awakened this morning with the news that we had traveled during the night and were in Akaroa after all. No mention of how the previously mentioned administrative issues were being handled, but I am sure that it doesn't hurt that the Captain is from New Zealand! Anyway, it looks like a beautiful day and most of the tours are going as planned.

Thanks for posting that Tug guy, your can certainly see the wind strength by the way Encore is listing to Port. She was apparently hit by a wind change with gusts to 46 knots (76 kmph)

Watch the 4? stern lines snap, the crew were on the ball and let the remaining line run out on the winch.

Also, the Bridge watch were quick on powering up the stern and bow thrusters, and they had the main drive screws going fairly quickly. SKP
