First cruise coming up and I hate to sound like a total newbie .... but I am!

Am looking to buy a waterproof case for shore excursions that will fit our passports, cash, etc and need to know the size of an S&S card. I am assuming it is the size of a credit card? thanks

Yup, same size as credit card. Just like a hotel room key.

yes, its the size of a credit card .. I get a hole punched in mine so I can wear it around my neck. If you dont have a lanyarnd, when the casino opens up, get a free one there, and with the hole punched in it you can wear it around your neck. Better than in a pouch that has to be opened each time to want to get into your cabin...quicker to me to just lean over and put it into the slot..the ones from the casino are springy.

Thanks everyone, such a helpful group.

Firefly, the waterproof pouch will be for shore excursions (we love the water and beach). Wanted be sure that it will hold passports, money and the S&S cards.

Thanks for the pics Kruz and great idea yogimax, to save them!

I would bring my drivers license ashore, not my passport ...just me ..and I have a pouch that holds my passport. I accidently got my passport wet already ...the drivers license will let you back on the ship and its waterproof!!!

I know if you miss the ship blah blah blah ....you need a passport to fly, but I have never had a problem bringing my drivers licenses ashore ... and I dont plan on missing the ship, Im carefull.

Also on the S&S card will be your muster station, your table # and where you eat dinner (I always go check it out while Im waiting for the cabins to be ready). The number on your card is your past guest number...so be sure and keep it for future bookings..I keep one card, not all of them... just to have the numbers handy for booking future cruises.

I leave my passport locked in my room safe,Wont do you much good on the ship if for some reason you missed the ship in a foreign port, etc but take a copy of it with me (in addition to my driver's license) on shore excursions.

Better off leaving drivers license and taking passport with you.

Totally agree. Local authorities in a foreign country don't care about my AZ driver's license or a photo copy of my passport. The only exception might be a tour operator (for a tour on which I have to drive a vehicle) may want to know that I'm a licensed driver somewhere.

Iv used my driver's license in numerous ports for a photo ID and have yet to have a problem.

I dont cut it short though, and go far enough from port that I have a chance of missing the ship.

For those that do not need passports of course the DL is the way to go.. but for those of us that can not travel with out a passport.. yes we take them with us at all times.. .. its just as easy to keep your passport safe as it is your DL...

Take your passport with you in foreign ports. Your drivers license will not help you. And also a copy of a passport is not a legal document and will not help you. If you are injured, arrested or do not make it to the ship before it leaves you will need the passport. You can buy a passport case on a lanyard that you can wear around your neck if you are really worried about losing it. In a foreign country you have very few rights, you need your passport.

Google "skinny dry case". It is about the size of a package of cigarettes and will hold every thing you need.

Make YOUR choice ... in my case my chances of being arrested or injured are very small. IF the ship sailed away, you could contact the Embassy and still get home. After the water bottle I throw into my backpack leaking we take for meds in the port on my passports, now I will leave it in the safe just to walk off the ship into a port, but thanks..I dont plan on taking my passport or ship card around my neck, once in port, why identify myself as off a ship. I just smile and nod at the locals and say Hola

Looks like I should have left out the part about carrying our passports to shore in my original post :) LOL I really just wanted advice about a pouch!!

For many, many years we travelled without passports but now as Canadians we have become used to carrying them. I would not be comfortable now in a foreign country without mine. I know many people feel that they have been OK without one in the past, so they should be OK in the future. However, hope is not a strategy. Now that we have gotten used to it, we just feel more secure with ours.

Safe travels everyone!
