Current Captains Con't

Recommended Posts

Since about two years after her start, he was not one of the first captains.

I trust four years doing the same Caribbean eastern and western trips again and again is enough. I would prefer a ship with different itenaries throughout the year.

Perhaps, but perhaps not. I was fortunate enough to have dinner with a captain in Chops on one cruise - smaller table so we actually got to chat a bit. He said that on many of his rotations, he never leaves the ship. Not even once! So, sure the scenery might get old, but the captain is much more occupied with running the ship and managing the people than spending time on where they might actually happen to be.

Many of us have worked in the same place for four years or often many more, and of all the complaints we have, "the scenery is old" is probably WAY down on the list! :) Remember, they're at work... not on vacation!

He left Jewel to go on vacation November 1, so if he does his 10-weeks, that would be around mid-January -- anytime now. :)

In most cases you can not count the standard ten weeks if a Captain is between two ships. He has to start when the position becomes vacant. Quiet often they have only a few weeks or even days off between two rotations on different ships.

On Independence the rotation of the current Captain is very long, maybe plans have changed?

I'm aware of that, thanks. :)

Of course it is work and I mean this not with focus on watching the scenery or sightseeing.

I learnt that it is much more interesting to steer a ship in and out of different ports of the world than to approach for the 200th time e.g. St. Maarten. Of course it is also more challenging with always changing iteneries as each new approach needs to be prepared and trained. Especially with a big ship. We were on the first cruise of Independence of the Seas to the Norwegian fjords and the Bridge team was much more busy than usually. It was the first time a ship that size visited these ports and the narrow fjords (and so far unfortunately she did not come back!).

According to the original schedule Captain Johnny would start around mid June after the first couple of cruises Captain Loy does. Captain Johnny would then stay on board until around end of August, return in early November and stay over Christmas until early or max. mid January 2017.

Sorry, delete Captain Loy and add Captain Gus!

Then Johnny wouldn't be on for the TA on Harmony.

Wonder if drydock weeks count toward the 10 weeks? If so, we would have Capt. MacDonald on Liberty on Feb 21??

those weeks most certainly do count. The captain is still busy on the ship during a dry dock. He is the company's representative and still has crew to manage. He is still the master. Capt Rune will be going home Feb 14 so Capt James rotation starts then. Unless of course they're working a longer than 10 week rotation.

When we were on Grandeur in October, our Captain was Ole-Johan Gronhaug, native of Lofoten Islands.

When we returned in December we had Captain Trond Holm. We sail again in February, so we'll see who the Captain is at that time.
