Chair Hogs question

Just wondering.. has Princess instituted anything against chair hogging or are they still doing nothing. I noticed that a few other lines are starting to crack down on the hogs (Celebrity for one)

Last time I was on the Grand, I went onto the covered pool area and stayed there for over an hour standing. Not one person was there but EVERY chair/lounger has something on it

Don't want to start a furor... just asking a question..

You need to be proactive with this issue as deckhands do not offer much assistance. If we see lounges that are not being used, we'll ask people in the area whether anyone is using them. If the answer is negative, we'll ask a deckhand to remove personal items and then make ourselves at home.

There has never been an issue when the previous users return...they know they've been away too long. If they ask, we tell them the deckhands have their belongings.

On the Grand last cruise they did have a table set up for removed items with a sign out sheet for retrieved items near the pool. There were only a few things on the table the times I went by. I never saw how the items got there & never saw anyone picking items up. Princess isn't really that strict on removing things.....they seem to take the approach of self enforcement.

:pTo me at least that's an attempt by Princess to solve the problem. The "table setup" allows you to be proactive and the chairhogs can see that Princess endorses it's passengers enforcing the rules.

I am always amazed at how many passengers apparently don't know they are breaking the rules. On our last cruise we sat next to a nice older couple who would appear at the aft pool ever morning at 9am, put their towels on two loungers and then go to breakfast for 45 minutes. When they would return the husband would sit for about 15 minutes and then leave and not return for several hours, all-the-while, his wife saved the lounger with his hat and a bottle of sun lotion. Go Figure:eek:

I find that most of the lounges by the pool have stuff on them by seven or eight in the morning. Throughout the day there very seldom are more than a third of the lounges occupied by a person. I don't want to waste my cruise time watching to see if the lounge is vaccant for a half hour or more.

One day just for fun? I would like to have a box of books and take some towels and occupy every chair at six am. I have a bad sense of humor.

The table would be a nice idea if the pool guys would take the time to collect items off the chairs but it didn't look that way when we were on the ship.

People who are gone for 45 minutes aren't nearly as bad as some I've seen who abuse it for hours at a time & think nothing of it.

On out last trip I was at the Lotus pool one morning and there was a TA who would arrive early each morning to "reserve" 4 chairs with towels, napkins with names on them & a piece of candy for people traveling with her. She did that for at least 2 pools I know of. Isn't that considerate of her. I sat on one of her chairs after waiting 30 minutes & removed the towels from the other chairs although no one came before she arrived to fine empty chairs. I only wished someone would have sat there before she showed. ;)

Why don't these lines stockpile extra chairs? That way if they are all taken they could bring out a lounger from some nearby room. I am sure lounge chairs aren't expensive as the lines probably buy in bulk. I don't get having limited chairs.

It is the space by the pools what is the problem with the hogs...lots of chairs in other places.

There are more than enough lounge chairs, its all in the location. ;) Even if you could carry another lounge chair over to the aft pool, there would be no place to put it, space is so limited. I have seen this sign by the 2 mid-ship pools, but it was not by the aft pool. :( It is sad that Princess chooses not to enforce it's own policies. Why shouldn't folks break the rules when they know there will be no consequences?

We just got off the Ruby yesterday. Each day, the Princess Patters would put on the front page a reminder that if loungers were unoccupied for more than 15 minutes, they would be made available for others. We were on the Riviera deck right near the aft pool. I would see the deck attendant put the loungers up early in the morning, and wouldn't see him again until evening when he put them away. As others have said, you'll need to be proactive, as the attendant never seemed to be around.

Love this idea! I also have a warped sense of humor:D

not just the pool chairs, theatre hogs make me huff & puff but the big one for me is the international cafe area, when you want to eat and chaps are holding chairs for 'the little woman ' who is shopping gurrrrrrrrrrrr:eek: it's bad manners and whilst I'm ranting people who don't say thank you when you step to one side for them gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr or people who leave washing in the machine and don't come back gurrrrrrrrrr. I need a holiday to calm my nerves :D

I too got off the Ruby yesterday. On the first day, we couldn't find a single "unclaimed" chair that was not in the shade, not one!

As for "removing" stuff, been there, did it done. One time (on CCL) it got very confrontational, almost physical when the person came back an hour later. Yeah, I know what the ships rules say, but a rule that is not enforced is not a rule.

How did you know the older couple knew they weren't supposed to save the chair? maybe he told his wife to stay there and not leave. The only way to tell is if that was the last lounger available and someone asked to use it...would she remove the hat and the lotion and let the other person use it?

A couple of cruises ago, my 8-yr-old got a plate of pizza from the poolside pizzeria, but couldn't find an occupier seat anyway in the whole area. We even walked up the stairs to the sun deck and found one chair that didn't have a butt in the seat. Someone said that it was being used, but the person was watching the ice carving demo by the pool. I signaled my daughter to sit down and eat, and I told the person, she'll be done long before he returns.

Neither my wife or I sunbathe as we live in Arizona and the novelty wore off many years ago so we aren't affected by this nor do we care much. However I do have a fetish for ships library books and "collect" them when I see them by the pool and return them to their proper location. If those were being used by chair hogs.... well how was I supposed to know?

I don't see why anyone would want to be right by the pool anyway. It is usually the most hot and noisy area. We like to sit on the upper level since you really get the ocean breezes up there and it's not as noisy.

I do think, and don't flame me on this, that a person should be able to save a chair for a short period of time.

I consider it proper manners when my wife needs to use the restroom to escort her there. I think it is polite. Leaving our stuff on the chair for that short period of time should not result in my belongings getting pinched or pitched should it?

I do agree that rude people who save a chair for long periods of time should have their things removed but not every chair with a book on it should be considered fair game.

My opinion, and once again I am not looking for an argument, is anything after say 30 minutes would be a violation and should be addressed.

I would just like to see Princess addressing the issue proactively; I've encountered some pretty heated discussions with the "oh, just take the chair and deal with it when the people return" situation. I agree that 30 minutes is reasonable, as I once lost my lounger going to the ladies room (no stop for pizza or ice cream...) The altercation almost turned physical upon my return!

(PS - and nothing steams me more, as I am an early riser, than chairs with books on them at 7am and no bodies in sight...)

30 minutes is reasonable but if it takes her 30 minutes to use the rest room you might consider adding fiber to your diets.

There would be plenty of chairs if people actually used them instead of reserving them for long stretches of time. But I'm with some others--I don't want to sit by the pool. I generally go up in the late afternoon (to one of the adult pools).

When we were on Oceania a few years ago they had a nice shaded area near the pool with 3 or 4 daybeds suitable for a couple. Very coveted, but if occupied by a single person you would not claim the other half. One was occupied by a gentleman for an hour or so as we sat in dining chairs and read. He eventually got up, but left his belongings. We asked if he was returning and he said he was eventually, but he had a lounge chair a few yards away in the sun with a book and towel on it and he was going to use that for awhile. Ha! Hogging two chairs by one person. He was indignant that we should suggest he chose one or the other as people were waiting. He finally relented but it wasn't pretty.

Love it.:D I think it's important for passengers to see that library books get returned promptly.;)
