Using a French Press onboard

I am planning on bringing a small french press on board the Elation this October. Has any one ever used on for making fresh coffee? I'm not sure if the hot water from the coffee makers will be hot enough to brew in a press, but might try it.

I know they have free coffee, but I find it repulsive. And I refuse to buy the flavored coffees they sell, reminds me of over priced stuff Starbucks sells. I roast my on coffee and have become spoiled to the taste of fresh roasted.

If any one has any experience with a french press on board please let me know if it is possible to brew using the water they provide. We plan on bringing the press up to the Lido in the morning and enjoying our coffee on deck.

I have never heard of this, but if it is like a coffee maker, it is not allowable on the ship and will be confiscated. No electrical appliances, as they are a fire hazard.

A french press is not electric so I don' t see a problem. You just have to be careful how you dispose of the used coffee grounds. The coffee on the Breeze was okay but not as good as my own coffee. I grind my own beans that I order from a store in New York.

Oh, okay....as I said, I did not know what it was. Thank you for clarifying.:o:):o

I forgot to mention that French press is not electric. Mainly wondering if the water will be hot enough to boil my grounds. I might get some odd looks, bit doubt they will confiscate my press. Goofycruiser if you love coffee you should try home roasting. After the first batch I was hooked.

Sounds good to me, I love drinking coffee on the lido. A fresh cup of real coffee will be so nice. I might even splurge and order some Jamaican Blue Mountain to roast for the cruise. Thanks for the info.

We took a french press with us on our last two cruises worked fantastic for us. My wife and I love a good cup of coffee. There not electical and the one one we brought with us are no bigger than 12 0z. All you need is some real hot water add your favorite coffee mix. By the way we thought Carnival coffee was pretty good but starbucks is a little better:rolleyes:

I had never used one until last week. My mom, knowing how much of a coffee geek I am, gave me a French press. She had a few laying around for gifts. I love not tasteing the paper filter in my coffee. And can't wait to drink mild coffee on board. Carnival makes the coffee too strong for my taste.

For those of you who routinely use French Presses on cruises, what do you do with the grounds? Put it in the garbage, down the sink, or what? I know Carnival is particular about the handling of garbage. I haven't ever taken my FP on a cruise but now I'm thinking about it! Nancy

Curious where you got this list? It doesn't match with what's on Carnival's site, in their FAQ section.

For several cruises we took a french press, and no problem getting hot water, the problem was the clean up mess. A few years ago I came across something called Aeropress, and picked one up. We take it on cruises now and find it much easier than the french press, and darn good coffee too. The used coffee grounds are formed into a hockey puck shape and just drop into the garbage can. Clean up is easy peesy

Has anyone measured the temperature of the water from the Lido? Optimum for FP is 200F.

Coffee snob and home roaster for 13 years

I'm not sure about the exact temp, but I know its very hot. There's nothing quite like roasting your own beans is it.

I've heard about the aeropress, but have not seen one before, thanks for the link. I might have to find one.

I assume you'll be bringing the press up to the Lido deck and using the hot water dispensers that are used for hot tea? I don't think the water will be hot enough to get a satisfactory cup of french press. We have bought the coffee cards and I think it's not as bitter or as strong as Starbucks. I wouldn't want to carry a french press around.

The problem with a French Press is cleaning it. How about using a drip method. Use coffee filters and it is a one second cleanup, won't break and takes up so much less room than a French Press.

Oddly enough, one of the entertainment staff was using one on Lido every morning on a cruise ....

I would carry it on so that you can explain to Security that it has no electrical parts if they should ask....

At home I sometimes like my individual drip..but have no problem using a few kleenexes, or tp, to wipe grounds onto a protected bundle and wrap up nicely and toss, lived too long where disposals had to be used very sparingly..litlte baggies many carrey can be toss things, it is nice to have a couple of cups ready to go and add more hot water and a few more grds for seconds, do not flush in toilet things to stress the system..no coffeground bundles, sanitary supplies etc...Sarah

We got to know Doug the guitar player/singer in the casino bar on the Spirit and ran into him several mornings as he was making his coffee in his french press with Lido hot water. He does it every day, so I guess it works fine.

I have French press and several different stovetop esspresso makers but not this one so now I have to check it out. I love my coffee and am not crazy about Starbucks because it is so bitter. I was waiting for Travesso to finally bribing theirs to market, but the Aeropress might br a better idea for travel!

We have taken a French Press on board many ships. We order hot tea from room service which is the hot water. However, if you like really hot coffee this might disappoint you. Yes as nice cup of coffee but not real hot. Caddyrag
