Krazy Kruizers Posted October 21, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2012 Yes -- there is FREE ice cream on all HAL ships. It is not self serve. The ice cream station is open from 11:30 AM until about 4 PM. Then it closes until it is time for the Lido dinner to begin -- around 5:30. I am not certain what time it closes -- usually around 8 or 8:30 and then will reopen again for the Late Evening snack. There will be several flavors to choose from and lots of toppings to choose from. Smoking from HAL's site: Is Smoking Allowed On Board? Our smoking policy reflects our commitment to the comfort of all of our guests. Presently, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of: Casino Northern Lights Disco (ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only) Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam) Sports Bar Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam) While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed. PathfinderEss Posted October 21, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2012 Yes there is ice crean on board the Statendam but it is not self service. DH can smoke at the back pool area - on your balcony - casino - sports bar - section of the Promenade outside deck and I think in a section of the Crows Nest. sail7seas Posted October 21, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 21, 2012 Smoking varies as to Crows Nest. Some ships you can smoke in a small section of Crows Nest and other ships, that lounge is smoke free.
Salacia Posted October 22, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Just to mention that from what I observed, there are areas of the casino where smoking is not permitted. My personal opinion is that Holland America's policy regarding smoking is rather strict, but tolerant with limitations. -S.

Sail7Seas, is the Crow's Nest smoke free on the Westerdam & Ryndam? I would like to know in advance of my two upcoming cruises on both of these ships! And, of course, the smoke does not 'drift' from the smoking area to the non smoking area of the casino, right?

My usual HAL desert is the "crisp of the day" served with vanilla ice cream. Roy

Typhoon1 Posted October 22, 2012 #11 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Some days, they may have several flavors of scooped ice cream, others it may be only one. Also, there may be scooped and soft serve depending on the day. Rest assured, it will be one or the other, or both.

PeaceLoveCruise Posted October 23, 2012 #19 Share Posted October 23, 2012 Read post #2 in this thread. Snarky. Speaking of smoking.... Is there a proper way to address if it does become such a problem on a veranda that it adversely effects enjoyment of your own cruise? I'm pretty tolerant, but some have taken it to an extreme at times. Thanks.

iuki Posted October 23, 2012 #24 Share Posted October 23, 2012 Don't forget the coconut ice cream! YES! My favorite. They served it on the Oosterdam on our cruise to Alaska. However, they served it only once. :(
