Wine Permitted to Carry Onboard Now

Why would you bring a $10 bottle of wine and pay $25 to open it up ???

I wouldn't. But I might bring a bottle that RCI doesn't carry just because I like it, no matter the price. But the odds of it going to the MDR are slim at best, so no worries about corkage. :)

So Mellygrant is this being applied in Oz as well do you know? Sailing in feb for my birthday and would love to take some nice SA wine with us.

The policy change is system-wide. The policy update is already appearing on the UK RCCL site.

My understanding is that kids are not allowed to have their own staterooms without an adult. For the purposes of booking you have one adult per room, so you should be able to get the 2 bottles per cabin.

If they are your own kids, they can be booked into their own cabin as long as it is next to or across the hall from their parents.

That's what my 91-year old father drinks. I figure the wines must be grown near the fountain of youth!:D

Oops. Carnival doesn't charge corkage for drinking wine on your balcony. nor will RCI, as I understand it. I don't know how NCL handles it.

We were not charged a corkage fee on Carnival in the MDR, even though we expected it (per their policy,) but we did have to pay a corkage fee in the specialty restaurant.

On both of my upcoming cruises, on X and RCI, we will bring wine onboard to enjoy in our cabin....:)
Out of curiosity, and if you know, how does it work on Celebrity? Does it end up being two per person? Do they restrict replenishment at ports of call?
It did wind up being 2 pp for my Celebrity cruise.....I was with a friend and we were in line together but had two different security people look thru our bags(they were more interested in the water bottle-making sure it wasnt liquor) than the 2 bottles we each had.......I really thought the policy was 2 bottle pp.....I usually don't cruise Celebrity..
If it's the same as on Celebrity, it's 2 bottles per stateroom, and they manage it just fine.
So, I'm just curious... how does Celebrity manage to enforce the 2 bottles per stateroom? How do they keep others in the same stateroom from carrying on, too?
Ok I confess that I did not read all 19 pages for this answer. Can you bring your already opened bottle of wine to dinner?

Then you would not have to pay the $25 for someone to open it for you?

Thanks
My gut is telling me the policy will resemble what is currently in place on Celebrity. Based on a recent posting on a Celebrity thread:
"As for opening the bottle yourself: Some people believe, based on the name of the fee, that the corkage fee is a charge for opening the bottle. This is incorrect. The fee is a fee for consuming wine which one did not purchase from the establishment they are bringing it into and it is intended to recoup some of the lost profits that result from one bringing their own wine in rather than purchasing the establishments wine. So the fact that you've opened it ahead of time makes no difference. They will not charge a fee for a glass of wine brought into the dining room but that is due to the fact that they can not tell if the wine was purchased elsewhere on the ship or not so it is a practical enforcement issue and not an actual exception from the corkage policy."
Being that the policy implementation is still new and in process, I think we will experience variation during the next few months. The above makes sense to me - if you bring a glass in, they have no idea of knowing if you purchased it in a bar. But if you bring a bottle in, they have a better idea where it came from.

Could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.
i am glad they finally allow this i have put it in my suggestions every time Now we have to work on smoke free nights in the casino!
on EN .. all formal nights were smoke free past 7 pm. granted there may have been some lingering smell( I was in it a grand total of 2 times, both when it was closed while in port) but they do provide SF options.. but I am sure somebody somewhere will complain that it isn't enough.

For those doing the math, we were on Explorer a week ago and had two bottles of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio - nothing special in the world of wines but one of my wife's favorites.

Cost per bottle in the MDR was $45. (Plus 15% gratuity)

Cost per bottle at Total Wine $14.95! With corkage, that would be $39.95 on board in the MDR.

Yeah, the difference is only $6 so bringing on your own wine ain't exactly where you're going to reduce the cost of the cruise! My point is that for those that are  at the $25 charge, you're already paying it!

What I'm looking forward to is being able to sift through the cellar or store and pick/bring something more interesting and to my liking than what's offered on board.

Progress!

I have not found a cruise line that carries my favorite wine and bubbly. It is usually about $10 in BevMo and Total Wine. I hope I can find it in NOLA and FLL for our 2 cruises next year.

I know I will have to pay the $15 fee on NCL but the N/C to consume in room is great on RCL now. We are used to Princess 2 bottle limit and N/C for room consumption.

I did find a good wine on Seabourn last year but it was included in cruise price so didn't worry about finding favorite in Istanbul. I could have asked for it in the room at no extra charge but their wine list was great.

Too bad none of them will update the beer policy. DH likes a specific brand of porter with dinner and none of the ships carry it.

I am now considering RCCL again! I have written numerous letters and postings asking for the wine policy similar to Celebrity be adopted for RCCL. During my previous sailings on RCCCL(all group), I ordered wine packages that were not good and often substituted for other wines. The new policy is great for those of us who like a glass of wine on the balcony each evening. If you plan to take a bottle to the dining room or a Specialty Restaurant, make sure that the wine is worth the $25.00 corkage fee. It still beats the $19.00 corkage fee for as many bottles that you would like to bring onboard NCL. The corkage fee on Princess is still priced reasonably.

Just checked in for the Freedom and our wine was confiscated. The security officer mentioned that the new policy may only be for the allure. I will check in at guest services once we board and post any updates if we ge it back or not.
