mandaleigh Posted November 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 25, 2012 The gunner on our coast guard escort was having such a great time while they were escorting us (on Oasis) while we were leaving port.He was hooping, hollering and yelling for all of us to scream. Someone yelled and asked if he liked his job and he yelled "YES! I live my job!!!!" What a great way to liven up the already exciting exit. Anyone else had this guy escort you out of port? Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted November 26, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2012 Yes, he is great fun. I always fear he might fall off that boat. It can go super fast and makes really sharp turns.

The coast guard escort the following week on our B2B was not as animated as the one from our Oct 6 Oasis sailing. I wonder how many pink boa feathers fell on him :)

CarpeCerevisi Posted November 26, 2012 #11 Share Posted November 26, 2012 Semper Paratus! This story reminds me of a few years ago on the Serenade as we sailed out of Astoria, Oregon. The USCG boat that escorted us was having some fun, they would come up our side at full speed and jump our bow wave and then turn around and go back behind us and then come up our side again. They did this quite a few times, it was nice to see that these dedicated people can have some fun in their job.
TBone2K Posted November 26, 2012 #12 Share Posted November 26, 2012 I haven't sailed out of Lauderdale since 2006 and haven't noticed anywhere else... Is the escort a normal thing they do?

Last time we sailed into Skagway we had an escort, in 2006. We found it rather strange. Andrew

sue d. miller Posted November 26, 2012 #19 Share Posted November 26, 2012 There are usually two boats. One is mellow going by the side of the ship, the wild one is zipping around the ship at warp speed all over the place:D

It must get awkward for them. ;) My only sibling (sister) has been in the CG for 20 years. The first time DH and I had an escort out of port (LAX) I texted her to ask if that was normal or something that was implemented after 911. Now we look forward to seeing them escorting us out of the port. We will be sailing out of FLL in March, so will make sure to look for this guy. Hopefully he will still be stationed there and on our side of the ship.
