Actually I have my own boat, and the policy on her is the same as it is on Celebrity. I am not changing my policy and they are sticking to theirs. The OP even goes so far as to applaud Celebrity in making the progress they have. (good on the OP)

 

Cunard has a smoking lounge, as do ships in the Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other fleets, to go along with tier smoke filled casinos. There are choices if smokers want that hit of nicotine.

 

There's no way "X" will be adding a "cigar lounge" in the future and I am glad for it.

So then that makes it OK for people to stink of cigarette smoke? Try to stay on point. This discussion is about smoking, not wearing perfume, passing gas, body odor, or having bad breath. Or are those some other habits you don't want to give up? :)

They're reasonable analogies, especially when people want to comment about the after smell and not the actual smoking.

 

Pretty much like dress code threads these threads are always predictable. It's pretty pointless to try to discuss, like politics or religion.

The only acceptable venue, IMHO, would be something like I have seen in some airports recently ( particularly in Europe) where they have assembled a Plexiglas Box, with it's own air supply and exhaust, and an airlock. I don't know if you would have to add a decontamination chamber on a ship or not. :)

Yes, I realize that, and said so in some other posts. Was trying to keep that post simple. The bottom line is there is no profit in it for Celebrity, if there were all those other reasons wouldn't come into play. But other lines do it.

 

What I find malodorous is those folks that repeatedly wear the same clothing on a longer cruise in order to "save" on baggage fees. Whew, have that stuff laundered. Much more offensive that stale smoke. I think just like cigarette smokers they become unaware of it.

 

Just speaking to the issue of profit to Celebrity, my husband frequented the cigar lounge on the Freedom of the Seas daily. He purchased the quite pricey cigars they had available and also the very, very pricey bourbons. I'm pretty sure they made a profit on him!;)

I suggest they put the smoking lounge in the smokestack. That way the smoke would be directed into the ship's exhaust stream through the creation a wind tunnel effect that would sweep any smoke particles away from the smokers. Oh, and the smokers would have to strip down during their smoking session to keep their clothes from stinking, and they would have to take a shower before reentering the rest of the ship to get the smoke out of their hair and skin.

 

An exclusive benefit for the smokers is that windows could be installed in the stack so they could enjoy the spectacular 360 degree views in between their coughing fits.

I don't smoke cigars and I no longer smoke cigarettes. But having a specific lounge for cigar smokers is completely reasonable. I don't have to go to it, those that don't smoke don't have to go to it, and those that want to enjoy a fine cigar and some brandy or cognac can go to it....not sure what the problem would be with that.

Now, just to be clear, I am not lobbying for this. But I do want to assert that this statement is simply untrue. If you have ever been on the QM2, you can spend all evening in the Commodore Lounge, while the Churchill room is full of cigar smokers, and not get any "stench". Likewise, on Liberty, the cigar lounge is right outside the theater, but no odor is noted.

Celebrity did try a cigar lounge starting with the Century and continuing on through a number of ships. Michaels Club was originally on some ships, not all, a cigar lounge. It was not profitable, from my experience it was a beautiful room that was never used. I'm sure technology has advanced but on the Century, Galaxy and Mercury, you certainly could smell the cigar smoke outside Michaels.

It still is irrelevant to bring up; it is akin to someone trying to justify stealing by saying that other people commit batteries. One type of unpleasant behavior existing is never justification for another type of unpleasant behavior existing. People wearing too much cologne/perfume is a totally separate issue and while it is unpleasant and it would be nice if people did not partake in excess perfume, it has nothing to do with whether or not being in an enclosed space with someone recently in a cigar lounge is pleasant.

That's your opinion and you are welcome to it. You do understand just because you see it that way doesn't make it a fact? It's part of the same conversation, unpleasant smells on passengers in the elevator.

 

I don't believe anyone tried to justify the smell of smoke on someone by pointing out other smells. The bottom line is people that have been smoking are going to be in the elevator no matter how much you or anyone else likes it, just like people that use too much perfume are there, no matter how much I may not like it. Neither thing is in violation of Celebrity's rules. Those people have the right to be there.

As djretired as pointed out Michael's Clubs were originally on most Celebrity ships cigar lounges. I remember the one on Mercury before Celebrity ended smoking in indoor venues. It was a beautiful room, but even if no one was smoking a cigar inside of it the room still reeked. The Michael's Club on Mercury was an under utilized space. We were on Century this past fall, and a number of special meetings were held in the Michael's Club, in addition to it being a piano bar in the evening. Since it didn't reek of smoke the venue was much more utilized.

I love a good smoking thread and to the elevator hurler, I'd love to see that. I'm all for smoking restrictions on a ship but you could spend hours in a well designed cigar lounge and NOT come out smelling like smoke. Those stinky people you refer to are chain smokers and/or closet smokers. Most of the time you wouldn't know a cigar smoker unless he/she was lighting up in front of you. That said, it's too bad but Celebrity will never do it.

one thing i don't miss is getting onto an elevator with a cigar smoker just out of the smoking lounge stinking to high heaven so bad i actually come close to hurling up my dinner. :mad:
