Six-Flags of the Seas.No thanks, I'll keep cruising for the love of the sea and ports
Please don't take this wrong...in no way, shape or form am I flaming. I really am curious because you weren't the first to say this. What would attract you to a ship like Freedom Class but repel you from Quantum Class? I can understand better when folks say Radiance, but I'm not getting it with Freedom. Thanks. :)
I'm with you on this. The new ships are only slightly larger than the Freedom, and it's not like the Freedom is some bastion of "traditional" cruising.
I agree with most of the posts on this string. Could they build a ship for adults, please...................
In a way, I don't believe they will build anything like that again. They are now family/child oriented and hung up on innovation, more so than ever before.

I wonder if they may be gradually intending to graduate older and/or childless couples to Celebrity or Azamara, which is totally fine. I wish it was otherwise, but I think this is the future of Royal Caribbean. I will gladly sail on Anthem if she leaves from Florida or the Caribbean, but the designs are getting farther away from our tastes.

I believe the days of the Radiance and similar ships are far gone.

They are. It's called Celebrity.

I don't mean that in a snarky way. I really think that's the aim between the 2 lines.

Great point...maybe that's the aim. They have to be very much aware of the fact that there is a large number of upper-tier C&A members that won't love these new ships. But they have to go where the money is, so I get what they're doing. I just don't like it, ha! I will have to try Celebrity one day. Might be sooner than I thought!

The thoughts expressed in this thread and others like it are surprisingly, OK--not so surprisingly--reminiscent of the thoughts expressed when Oasis was first revealed. Many were dismayed at the innovations, size and amuzement park orientation of the ship. Others like myself were eager and willing to give the ship a shot and once they did were thriled with what they experienced.

Threads like these show there are two distinct types of cruisers. The traditional small, quiet ship cruiser and the WOW-ship cruiser. Luckily there are lots of types of ships out there to fulfill every taste and expectation.

I can't wait to try Quantum of the Seas, by the way. I don't think it is a matter of age. I am seventy.

There are things that I think are cool about these new ships like the bigger staterooms and the family corridored staterooms. The ripcord thing looks interesting and the thought of having the sports court indoors is a great idea. (I've seen many volleyballs, basketballs, & dodge balls go over board)
On the other hand I think the bumpercars are a silly idea and the "Northstar" crane thing looks horrid and distracts from the whole architecture of the ship.
JMHO.

I like the new features announced, although not sure I would use them all myself.

For a cold weather itinerary, this might be a ship I would look to sail.

I think there will be some more featured announced later that might appease others. It seems they first announced the "big" items but it looks like there might be some indoor/outdoor venues that will different. When I look at some of the TBD spaces, I am hoping they will connect you to the sea more.

i really like that it looks like there is an outdoor seating area for the WJ...although if it's cold yet, I'm not sure how much it would be used.

I am from the midwest so I do have to fly. I would sail on Quantum for a Bermuda or NE/Canada cruise (both of those are on my list). I doubt I would fly to NJ for a Caribbean/Bahamas cruise, which is fine. I do like that they have some more "Exotic" choices for ports on the longer sailings. Maybe they already do for the longer cruises from NJ now. I really wouldn't know.
I'm so with you on this one. Have you tried Celebrity? We took our kids on Indy thinking they would love the entertainment/flowrider/H20 zone etc...but they really weren't that into that kind of stuff...they loved the buffet and pools and hanging on the balcony. So we're going to take them on Celebrity next. (But first we are going to try a couples cruise on HAL). There are other options out there!
Yes, LOVE Celebrity and I have to agree with you about the kids. We were recently on Enchantment and they had more fun on that ship than Mariner and Freedom (or NCL). I think our kids would get along famously!:)

[B]Cruise lines are building ships to attract new/future cruisers. IMO, the age in which ships are built with the concept of people just relaxing by the pool for 7 days is over.

Ships are being built with the next generation in mind and this is what attracts new business and revenue.

There are still a large number of cruise ships that offer the "traditional" cruise experience. Variety is the spice of life! Just book a cruise on one of the ships that fits your specific tastes. I can't wait to experience this awesome looking ship.

 :)

I don't think anyone is begrudging those who choose to enjoy the WOW of the new ships, but I think I for one am saddened about the direction RC is going. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of my cruises, RC or not....I am not hard to please. I will probably move on to Celebrity, but I am sad that RC is moving in that direction because I have enjoyed their product for many years. I do understand the need to appeal to the mass market, everyone needs to make a living. I will say that despite all the changes RC has made to their product to cut costs, many of us have still been loyal customers and it stings a bit to know that attracting new customers is more important than keeping the loyal ones. jmho.

I might get tarred and feathered for saying this, but it seems that with the Quantum Class they were going for a "spiritual successor" to the Radiance Class. I'll explain my reasoning:

-Both built at Meyer Werft
-Both have lots of glass enclosing the upper decks
-Both have large, multi-purpose aft lounges with big glass windows
-Both have a higher ratio of outside and balcony cabins, Quantum taking it a step further with the virtual balconies
-Where the Radiance has the outward facing glass elevators, the Quantum has an "elevator" that takes you up above the ship for even better ocean views

So maybe it's a stretch, but I can see traces of Radiance DNA here. As Dennis Miller says: "But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

It does sting a little, but it's the way of the world, unfortunately. They need to go after the families and younger generation so they can secure them for the years to come. Us? They've already got us!! ha, ha!

Hi Folks

My wife and I sailed on Rhapsody of the seas in March , our first cruise for a long time , we enjoyed the ship and its facilities.
However we decided that our next cruise will be on Celebrity's Solstice as we perceived that it would offer a more 'adult' environment. We applaud RCCL for their offerings which are providing excellent "family" cruises.
As we are now not in the first bloom of youth our wants are different, we want a quality relaxed holiday , we are not interested in "rides", or "entertainment" at all.
We would like some nice music and an after dinner dance , a good ships reading room and lots of areas that are noise free. We would prefer a ship that is totally smoke free. We have no need of a casino .....

I wonder perhaps if there is a market for LINERS rather than cruise ships. IE ships that offer a trip from place to place but leave you to yourselves .. no cruise directors to organise you .. I know this is turning the clock back , I've just been reading Sir James Bisett's second book were he describes a number of cruises on board Cunards "Coronia" circa 1907 -- 1930 now those were the days
Oh dear perhaps I was born too late :-)

Best Regards

John

I was going to offer the same response and saw that Aquahound beat me to it. Pitbull, the bad news is you're looking at the wrong cruise line for what you want. The good news is there are a number of other lines that seem to have exactly what you want, like Celebrity, Princess, HAL, etc. If you haven't already tried one or all of those lines perhaps you should and will find it more to your liking.

Hi,

I think the Quantum of the Seas looks great! I am a big fan of Royal Caribbean (I have done 17 cruises with them since 1983) and look forward to trying this ship. In particular, I like the aft lounge with the huge windows. I like a wide variety of ships and enjoy more subdued lines such as Cunard and Holland America as well as more active lines like Royal Caribbean. The Quantum of the Seas is at the top of my list of ships to try.
The North Star is the only thing I find a complete waste
Possibly. If that winds up being the case they can just chop it off and repurpose the area into somethine else.

Carnival Corp. cut the entire shopping-cart-handle nightclub off of the Grand Princess because it wasn't working out.
A crane with a hamster ball on the end of it shouldn't be too hard to eliminate. Maybe they can build a Viking Crown Lounge in its place. :D

Yep and I just got off Celebrity and loved it. I love what RCCL and Celebrity has to offer and I'm sticking with those two from now on. Personally I am looking forward to doing a LIVE review on board Quantum :D

It reminds me of the blimp thing they tried on the Oasis class. It probably occured to the same engineer too, whom I am surprised wasn't fired at all.

It's probably too late but I could see the crane being scrapped. They say they would use it at sea and in ports. I just hope it doesn't stray into the approach path of the Isla Grande airport in San Juan when they're playing with it on a port call there.

I also wonder what they will do when it fails while extended over the side with people on board. I mean, it is a mechanical contraption and like elevators, escalators, and, well, cranes, it will fail. They'll probably require riders to get checked on the skydiving simulator first before they board the gondola from hell. :D
Yes and so do all the people that are booking the two Oasis class ships week after week. RCI knew what they were doing with Oasis and they know what they're doing with Quantum. They do their homework and the do it well.
Just off the Allure, plenty of light and sunshine on our CP balcony. We had a blast with friends and barely used the pool deck. CP was heaven.
