duesouth Posted June 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 12, 2013 I am going on allure of the seas this November. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the iPhones. I am going on the cruise with my partner and my 18 year old son. Is it worth the cost? Do they work well? duesouth Posted June 12, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted June 12, 2013 I would like to keep in contact with my son on the ship. I was hoping to hear some feedback from other cruisers that have rented them on the ship. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
MSN-Travelers Posted June 12, 2013 #5 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Staying in touch with fellow passengers via iPhone or any cell phone is cost prohibitive. It doesn't matter if you plan to use voice or text.
navybankerteacher Posted June 12, 2013 #6 Share Posted June 12, 2013 An 18 year old should be able to co-operate in keeping in touch. You can plan to check in at a certain time/place, leave post-it notes to each other on cabin door or inside the cabin. No point in running up extra costs which can be avoided. paul929207 Posted June 12, 2013 #7 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Just plan times and places to meet. Leave notes in the cabin or on the cabin voice mail.
duesouth Posted June 12, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted June 12, 2013 Royal carribean offers refurbished iPhones for a rate of 30 dollars a week. They can text other passengers and call other passengers. I should've explained it better then my general question. This is not my personal phone. 1025cruise Posted June 12, 2013 #9 Share Posted June 12, 2013 In that case, you would be best asking this on the RCI board.
Rare Scrapnana Posted June 13, 2013 #10 Share Posted June 13, 2013 So that means you will have to rent two. Unless there is some reason that you need to be in constant communication with your son, make him responsible to check in with you in person at various times during the day. Save your money. kitty9 Posted June 13, 2013 #11 Share Posted June 13, 2013 You'll also need to find out what the charge will be per text. Just because they rent them doesn't mean calls or texts will be free. For iPhones, the per text charge is $.50 to send and $.05 to receive. Plus, you'll want to make sure your teen doesn't use the phone to text home. Teens can text hundreds of times a day, which will cost you big bucks. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. If you plan your day, you really won't need phones. Rare Keith1010 Posted June 13, 2013 #12 Share Posted June 13, 2013 I would not use the iPhone on the ship. You can sign up for a plan for coverage while in port but watch the pricing. Keith
perbinder Posted June 13, 2013 #13 Share Posted June 13, 2013 I have seen people talking to each other on walkie talkies which are relatively inexpensive. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

Steviewonder1 Posted June 13, 2013 #15 Share Posted June 13, 2013 Go to Wall Mart and buy a couple of FRS Walkie Talkies for under $30. Use them and talk all you want for FREE. There may be some areas of the ship that reception is not that good, but it is way cheaper than any Phone alternative.

bizeemom4 Posted June 14, 2013 #18 Share Posted June 14, 2013 Here's a dumb question - how do we prevent the million text messages that my daughter and I receive every day from incurring charges while the phones are with us in the safe. We will NOT be using them at all while on the boat. If we power them down, do the texts rack up charges? I know it's a dumb question but I'm a bit technologically illiterate. Hi thanks for the reply... Yes make sure the phones are turned off...you will not be charged for incoming messages/texts as long as you don't reply and your phone is not roaming. I would turn your data off in your general settings just to make sure. Then even if you accidentally turn them on and don't realize it. You won't be charged. I hope this helps. Ingraham4 Posted June 15, 2013 #24 Share Posted June 15, 2013 We put our phones on "airplane mode". That way they won't keep trying to find a signal to hook up to. The only time they came out of that mode was when we were on an island and we KNEW FOR SURE we were in a wi-fi area. Worked out great!
