Unused On Board Credit

What happens if you have an unused on board credit? Wondering if I don't use all of my on board credit will I just lose any of those dollars I have left. This has never happened before, I usually use all of it if not more!

A lot depends how you got the OBC, Different things happen with different OBC.

Also to politely correct previous poster. Carnival does not give you a check under your door for refunds anymore. It get mailed to you, unless you go and cash out your obc at the casino or guest services the last night.

Yes, you can cash out on the last night on one of the machines or you can go to purser's desk. BUT if your OBC is from Cruise Cash, you use it or lose it! This is something new that began in December 2012. So if you are purchasing cruise cash for your OBC, be sure to "under buy" and top it up as required.

I am so glad I saw this post. I bought a few hundred dollars worth of onboard credit last year, I think it was called funship dollars at the time and what I didn't use was returned to me in the form of a check on the last night. I was planning to do the same this year and only thought they changed the name they were calling it. When I read your reply I thought "No Way, I got mine back" but I just looked on Carnival's site for the Cruise Cash and it clearly says the following:

 

Cruise Cash provides an immediate credit to a guest's Sail & Sign account. This credit is good for any charge made to their account including taxes and gratuity charges. Cruise Cash is valid for a single voyage and cannot be transferred to future bookings. Cruise Cash is non-refundable and any unused credits will be forfeited.

Which is one of several reasons why buying cruise cash in advance of your trip makes no sense to me...

We had some non-refundable credit on our account so we visited the casino. Put some money on a slot machine pull the handle and then go cash out! Otherwise we would have left some money on the table!

For me and my wife, I know my bill at the end of the cruise will be in the $1000 range. From drinks, excurtions, gifts, shopping, nice bottle of Dom in the Steakhouse, and casino.

Therefore, I pre-pay some of my costs by purchasing $400 to $500 in Cruise Cash up front. Lessens the pain at the end.

Have you ever sailed Carnival? I don't see Carnival in the cruises listed. They do not refund leftover OBC to your credit card. It's either cash on the last night or they mail you a check in a week or two.

 

However, you can also have it put on your casino account and cash it out.

I completely agree. For me, it would make more sense to put that cash in a jar and then take it with you. Or, better yet, set aside that money in your bank account, settle your bill with a rewards program credit card (airline miles, hotel points, cash back...), and then make sure that balance is paid off in full when it comes due.

 

But, the most important thing in handling situations such as this is to handle it in a way you are comfortable with (assuming its not financially foolish, such as putting it on your credit card that already has a large balance of which you're only paying the monthly minimum).

I received a final account with a positive left over OBC. You can cash out at one of the inboard ATMs. Any small amounts of OBC will be donated to charity unless you claim it at GS

They will either give you a check or mail it to you later. We did a b2b on the Triumph earlier ( we got off just as the people were getting on for the fire cruise) & I wanted to transfer our credits to the 2nd. leg of the cruise but they told me they couldn't do that & gave me a refund check.

You could have cashed out the check then reapplied the cash to your SS card at GS or the ATM on board

This happened to me once. Before debarkation, I had a check in my hands. It was slipped under my door before I got up. I had prepaid gratuities, and then received quite a bit of OBC right before we cruised. We just couldn't spend it all. :D
