Just checking - men's mdr attire

The only night they make people look even remotely dressy is formal night. Or cruise elegant as they call it now. Even then, all they want is men in long pants and a decent polo shirt. I have seen people wearing what almost seemed to be bathing attire in the mdr lately on my trips. They usually will look the other way most evenings but it all depends on how presentable people want to look in a rather upscale dining setting. I would never go into the dining room with a tshirt and shorts, minimum mdr dress for me is a golf shirt and nice slacks. But a lot of people apparently do not feel that way these days.

Yes nice shorts and a collar shirt are very acceptable.

All you people ragging on people not dressing to the nines every night in the dining room need to STOP!!

Since the airlines are charging a bloody fortune for luggage, people are more careful how and what they pack.

I for one am happy that Carnival has relaxed the dress code. We still dress nicely, no longer do we bring our formal clothes. Hubby does not bring his suit coat anymore.

For us its all about the packing and weight of our luggage .

Here is the dress code as taken from the Carnival website...Shorts OK in the MDR regular nights, not OK on Elegant night...According to Carnival

What to wear?Casual attire is the order of the day. We suggest shorts, sundresses, tank tops, etc. for the ladies, and for men; shorts, polo shirts, T-shirts, etc. will do. We suggest you wear rubber-soled, low heeled or flat shoes for extra traction while onboard. The use of any footwear with wheels, including but not limited, to Heelys© shoes, is prohibited on board our ships. For dining you may want to dress up a bit and/or bring along a light sports jacket or cardigan.

Most evenings we have a Cruise Casual dress code, but there are those Cruise Elegant evenings one or two nights throughout your “Fun Ship” voyage, where you will have the opportunity to showcase your more elegant attire. For those who want casual attire for dinner time, the Lido Restaurant is open nightly, and has a more relaxed theme. However, shirts and shoes/footwear (flip-flops) must be worn at all times inside the Lido Restaurant.

Both dress codes for the dining rooms are described below.

Cruise Casual Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Sport slacks, khakis, jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long), collared sport shirts; Ladies - Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, Capri pants, dress shorts, jeans (no cut-offs).

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men and baseball hats.

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too!

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

Thank you! I understand that many people would prefer it if shorts were not allowed, but, as stated above, according to the dress code, most nights they are acceptable.

Acceptable? No. Do people get away with it? Yes.

I dont understand this response that shorts are not acceptable.. Carnival dress code says that shorts are fine to wear except on elegant night, so if Carnival has it acceptable it is... People do not get away with wearing shorts, as its allowed...

Gentleman: “a man whose conduct conforms to a high standard of propriety or correct behavior.” (Merriam-Webster)

Yes you can wear shorts in MDR accept elegant nights, many of use choose not to.

Not sure, but are you implying I'm not a gentleman if I choose to wear shorts in the MDR?

I agree people get away with unacceptable attire on Formal Night and other nights. :( In my opinion, shorts are for the daytime wear and can be permitted for breakfast or lunch but not for dinner in the MDR. There once was a time when I was turned away to have breakfast in the MDR wearing shorts. I respected that and for the remainder of the cruise I came in trousers. If the Maître' d were to send more people up to the Lido Buffet when they come in casual clothes then people would dress more appropriately. Rules should be followed and it's not like anybody is going to starve if they are sent to the buffet.:D

I am not implying anything, just pointing out one reason why some choose to exceed the minimum standard.

People who wear shorts aren't getting away with anything. They are dressing themselves in accordance with the ship's guidelines. That makes them acceptable. Times change. My grandfather used to wear a suit to baseball games because that was the norm in the day. Now you don't see people dressing in suits in games because things evolve. Evidently you haven't.
