Why are Oasis / Allure blue and not white? Why not upgrade fleet during dry docks?

Pretty much in the title; why are Oasis and Allure blue in color and the rest of the fleet is still bright white? What is the significance, if any, of the difference? And why not paint the ships that go into drydock in a similar fashion for more commonality amongst the fleet?

Variety is the spice of life.

Why are the hulls of Allure and Oasis of the Seas light blue instead of white?

-Dale M.

Dale, glad you enjoyed your recent cruise on Allure of the Seas. The hulls of Oasis and Allure are painted a very light blue. Please note that I am not in favor of gender stereotyping and do not always support blue for boys and pink for girls. On the other hand, I am a traditionalist and the ship will always be a “she.” We think the light blue looks terrific on her.

There was a lot of internal debate about moving away from the traditional white hull. Ultimately we decided that the Oasis-class ships are so unique that we wanted a somewhat different hull color. The difference is most visible when the sun is shining directly on the hull (never a bad thing!). At other times you have to look pretty closely to notice much of a difference from the rest of the fleet.

I thought I read when Oasis was being built that Fain said that the hull paint they chose would be more aerodynamic (hydrodynamic). For example, the water would slip over the surface faster thus allowing for an increased percentage of fuel savings. And that paint allowing this only came in pale blue.

I'm old and I could have just dreamed I read something like that.

Wow! I saw Allure "up close and personal" in Cozumel a couple years ago and took tons of pictures. I never noticed that the bottom of the hull was blue! When I looked at some of my pictures, sure enough...definitely blue! I need to pay more attention!:o

I think the blue is nicer to look at and easier on the eyes.

I have sailed on Oasis, have tons of pictures, and like you, I never noticed that the hull was a light blue.

Hull color plays a role in energy conservation. Light colored hulls are best for hot weather and dark colored hulls are best for cold weather. I would imagine the pale blue deflects sunlight and glare from the water, probably a little better than white.
