Cigarette smoking on verandas

Thanks for the response :)

Besides that one side of the bar.... Is other designated areas far from everything?.. Like if your in the casino is it a far trek or something within close proximity.

Or at the pool, something near the vicinity or are you walking to the front of the boat?

Sorry 1st time cruiser here.... Would the deck plans show all that info so I can go look at them and not have to bother you wonderful folks with these silly questions.

Thanks

Deck 5 port side midship (under the hump) is a designated smoking area.

One reason you may see someone smoking on their balcony the 1st day and then not after that is because they did not know they were not allowed to smoke on the balcony, and it is not always security that tells them. On our last cruise I was talking to one guy in the smoking area and he had no idea smoking was not allowed on balconies, once he knew he stopped.

Not everyone that smokes on his or her balcony is some inconsiderate jerk that thinks they are allowed to break rules, many of them do not know about the rules.

I find it amazing that someone would pay thousands of dollars for a cruise yet know so little about the cruise line they are spending all that money on. I would NEVER spend that much money without understanding what I am getting, what I am NOT getting, and what to expect when there.

Go for it, Smokers! Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette!

But not in a cabin or on a veranda near me. I will run (not walk) to call security on you. I will confront you with every expletive known to human kind. It will not be pretty.

I spent too many years paying my money for verandas I got chased from because there were no rules against smoking.

So, don't want to obey the rules? Take your business elsewhere. I understand Princess has some pretty nice cruises...

Well, that's entirely possible -- but hard to comprehend, once you are familiar with X's policies. You don't have to read the fine print in the cruise contract, or search through the obscure FAQ's on the website, to find their smoking policy. It's right there, every day, in the daily bulletin. Where smoking is and is not permitted is clearly spelled out there.

Following Celebrity's lead, Princess has banned smoking in staterooms AND on balconies effective Jan 15, 2012.

Really? The no smoking sign on the stateroom key, the no smoking sign on the railing on the balcony, and the literature in the room explaining there is no smoking in the rooms/balconies and where the smoking areas are located is not enough to inform a smoker of the policy?

I think it is less of not knowing the rules and more of testing the waters to see if neighbors will complain or if they can get away with it the rest of the cruise.

I am sorry I asked the question, expecting a simple answer. I don't defend smokers, knowing it is a habit that some, for various readout or won't quit. I stand on neither side of the smoking habits of other. I didn't expect it to turn into a pissing contest. Merely was curious as to how this was detected or dealt with.

From now on will keep my questions to mysel

And those are the same people who complain about being nickel and dimed if they have to pay for something optional such as specialty dining, or paying for laundry service instead of spending part of their vacation doing their own laundry, or paying the airlines for an additional suitcase so they can dress appropriately in the MDR. They don't care enough to find out what they get for their thousands of $$$$, but they sure come unglued if they have to spend an additional $50 for something extra.

When you ask a question about a hotly contested subject and a controversial one then you get strong opinions. No one attacked you for asking but the smoking question is probably near or at the top of that list.

The reason it gets so intense is many people CHOOSE the Celebrity line for their no smoking policy and to have someone deliberately ignoring the rules for their own selfishness tends to get people going pretty quickly.

To give you an example as we sailed into port in Columbia I was trying to enjoy the moment when a woman stood right next to a large no smoking sign and lit up. I pointed to the sign and said "there is no smoking here." She blew smoke in my face and in her best Spanish said she didn't speak English.

Thankfully a crew member came over and tapped her on the shoulder and in his BEST Spanish told her (I presume) there was no smoking and when she put the disgusting thing out on the deck walked her somewhere for a chat at least I presume.

So NO, there is no "simple" answer to the smoking question as there can be a great discrepancy as to if it is enforced depending on who the crew is.

And it's because they don't bother to research they get into trouble. Just a couple weeks ago, some guy on the Ask A Cruise Question board didn't realize his kids needed a birth certificate to take a cruise, and he didn't have them, with their cruise in two days. Anyone who doesn't bother to research the dos and don'ts of cruising deserves what they get.

Please don't let the responses deter you from asking questions that you would like an answer to. Smoking threads tend to get very heated and very off topic. Just let it roll off your back--it's not directed at you.

I'm assuming the spaces designated for smoking can change by ship/itinerary/cruise, but in my experiences I saw it being allowed by the Mast Bar (not the Mast Grill) and deck 14 port side outside of the Oceanview on Reflection. I thought this was an awful place for it as it was filled with smokers and all the smoke blew right inside the door to the entrance of the Oceanview. Maybe they have changed it since but it really was a terrible place to designate a smoking area.

As we are about to take our first Celebrity cruise I have posted a few times on this forum. I have been surprised and disappointed at some of the aggressive vitriolic responses to my somewhat innocuous posts. I do now wonder if Celebrity is the right choice for us.

Don't worry there is a 99% chance you won't meet one of the idiots on your cruise. I too was amazed when I joined last year and read these responses, even if you respond in a civil manner about smoking the thread gets over run by some crazies with some pretty funny responses.

I love ones like

"I will confront you with every expletive known to human kind. It will not be pretty." Really ?

"I hate all smokers" - this was in a different thread

One answer in this thread was something like :

"if I saw someone smoking on a balcony it would be the last thing they do"

or something like that looks like it was deleted.

Most of the smokers I met last year were not familiar with the policy the were enticed because of the free 1,2,3 promo - and had either not cruised before or had cruised once 5 years ago when you could smoke on a balcony.

Celebrity is a great cruise line, you are going to love it. But keep in mind that many people, like me, moved to Celebrity looking for a more restrictive smoking policy. To me cruising is about the itinerary, food, service and overall experience. I do love to read on my balcony and it is awful to have that experience ruined by a chain smoker next to you. After too many ruined balcony experiences in RCCL we moved to Celebrity. BTW, Royal also changed their smoking policy and it is not allowed anymore on the balconies or indoor venues (with the exception of the Casino). If you think that this discussion is heated, go to the RCCL board, most threads end up deleted or closed. :):)

I am no longer a smoker, but the odd waft of cigarette smoke is not a problem. A smoke filled room? well that's a different matter; as is the filthy air in our towns brought about by the particulates and noxious gases from some motor vehicles.

I see your point -- that someone recently new to the line might not have given the policy much thought. But, even if you never read about X's smoking restrictions in your cruise contract, and if your TA never pointed it out, I think most folks would figure it out, pretty quickly. One clue would be the presence (or absence of ashtrays). Folks at the Sunset Bar quickly figure out that it is an area that allows smoking. But, even if a new passenger went out onto their balcony before reading any of the "Welcome Aboard" literature on their bed -- they would notice that there are no ashtrays, anywhere. And, of course, the room steward would explain the policy, and be happy to point out where the approved smoking sections are.

When I'm enjoying my first cigarette in a designated smoking area, I can guarantee there will be someon who will remark that they had no idea they couldn't smoke on their balcony and that they wouldn't have gotten a balcony if they had known it.

Travel Agents sometimes do not share that information prior to booking in their zeal to sell a balcony over an ocean view/inside. I don't think those that book directly with cruise line are told either up front.

People research to find out price, itinerary, cabin choices, etc. A very few will go into the FAQ's or the "Things to Know" in the back of the brochure (assuming they ever see a hard copy brochure in these days of internet) where the smoking information can be found prior to booking. I don't know if you can bring up that information from an e-brochure prior to booking even. But, if you can, I doubt very many access it (lol).

Twenty or thirty years ago, I might have agreed with you, but today there are significant restrictions placed on where one can smoke. Whereas in the past, the assumption was that you could always smoke in your place of work, at your favourite restaurant or any hotel room that you booked, that is simply no longer the case.

As smokers form a small minority group today, Celebrity or a TA is unlikely to volunteer to a potential customer the lines smoking policy, but would be happy to do so if asked. Any smoker considering his or her first cruise should ask, just as they should ask about the policy of a hotel they've not stayed in previously or a restaurant that they've not dined in.
