What's The Thinking Behide CCL's Gaudy Interiors

Ever since I took my first cruise at a young age I have been intrigued at the interiors of Carnival ships, the intrigue is still there even though I am now 18 years of age.

Everything from the patterns, to the colors, and the images that Farcus incorporated into the overall designs of the ships are definitely unique and controversial at times to say the least.

One of my favorite Farcus designed atriums would be the Spirits:

There is definite merit to the design posted above. Thanks for sharing it. The only CCL ship I had seen in person was the Splendor. And it had very little design merit. In fact the Lido Deck is nothing short of plain old tacky

I've wondered what particular hallucinogen Farcus had taken while on different Carnival ships in jest. But, in the end, I didn't mind all that much. It made them more festive. Except.............the Splendor. UGH.....he must've ingested bad 'shrooms during THAT design.

Although I've only been on the Glory, I also found it to be "like Vegas". The only problem was it reminded me of Vegas from the 70's or 80's. The Frontier and the Stardust come to mind.

I like the "new" Vegas.. Aria, Cosmopolitan, etc. But furniture and interior design opinions are just that, opinions. No design is right or wrong, and if you happen to not like a design or overall style (ala Farcus), there are plenty of other options out there!

the splendor was suppose to be a costa ship instead of carnival. After it was built, it was transferred to carnival. I wonder Joe did the designs of that ship

I haven't actually been ON a Carnival ship yet, so maybe I shouldn't comment. But I'm going to anyway. ;) When I first started looking at Carnival, I knew if we chose this line it would be on Valor due to the itinerary. While it is completely different from Royal, I didn't hate the pics I was seeing. I am actually fascinated by the American flag floor and can't wait to see it. It is the staterooms, however, that have me a little......I don't even know the word. What is with all the shades of orangey-pinky-whatever that is going on in there? And the lights above the balcony door? Obviously, it didn't keep me from choosing Carnival, but I will miss Royal's staterooms.

I've been on both lines a couple times & honesty can't recall much of the decor. The Carnival Pride did seem darker than Grandeur of the Seas... As for the state room decor, decor in the atrium, etc. I can't recall how they are different or the same.

I love Joe Farcus ships....I miss it on the new ships.....

We enjoyed the old-school vegas-style too, find the décor interesting in the fact that it's different. Wouldn't want to look at it every day but for a holiday, it's perfect.

You could always count on a Carnival ship to be different from the competition! They never followed the crowd and just kept pushing out the same ship over and over again. That really set them apart from the other lines.

People always had something to say about their ships -- be it good or bad -- it really had people talking.

A few things to clarify:

The Splendor was allotted to the Carnival brand before the building process had begun.

Also, Joe Farcus did the interior design for Carnival and continues to do so for Costa as well.

To me, the Spirit decor is dull. In fact, the prototype for each of the classes seems to be dull (Tropicale, Holiday, Fantasy, Destiny, Spirit) Subsequent ships in each class gets the "fix". My FAVORITE over the top decor was the Ecstasy.

I personally think the MDR are tastefully done... but the public spaces -- the seating areas where trivia is played, for example -- can be over-decorated.

Repeating gold flur-de-lis on every wall surface, the trim, stair risers, the side of the piano, basically every visible surface gets to be toooo much, especially when the carpet has a pattern, the table tops are a busy marble, chairs and sofas have odd shapes and curvy lines, etc. etc.

The trim could be toned down quite a bit to reduce sensory overload, while featuring detail. Select fewer features, letting each be more harmonious.

I love the curvy furniture, for example, but wish it was placed against a less-busy background (which would also make photographs better!)

Speaking of MDR's I really like the dining rooms on the Conquest the Renoir and Monet:

I too love the Conquest MDR. The decor is one of my favorite reasons i sail Carnival a lot. It is so festive and lot's of "pizazz" and does not hold back. I think it helps with the energy on the boat. Now i could also ask why does RCI tone it down so much? Navigator while nice both my wife and i agree that it is a very conservative design with some elegant tones to it. However it's not the "wow" no pun intended we get with all the glitz and pizazz Carnival's design has.
