What can we do to protect ourselves other than washing hands. We are on the Crown In a couple of weeks and my wife is concerned and considering not going...

Hi, I typically take a container of Noro Cloth wipes with me on board. Being a kidney transplant patient and being on immune suppressant medications, I cannot afford to be careless. I wipe down the cabin surfaces typically touched and carry several in a plastic bag for public restroom or similar activities. Knock on wood, so far so good.

Here is just one of many available. I suggest you get some and then pay attention to surfaces touched while on board. Enjoy your cruise!

Yeah. They also didn't cover how much Noro is in local schools, colleges, hospitals, or other public locations. Of course, that wouldn't have made a good story.

It sure has been going around, DH had it after he flew to FL a couple of weeks ago - guess we can't blame the plane.

Work mates kids had it - guess it can't be the schools

Another workmate had too not sure what was NOT to blame

But if it's on a ship it must be the awful ship that made everyone sick LOL:eek::eek: Have to love the media:eek:

I am having a hard time understanding this. The Crown underwent a deep cleaning in LA on Saturday, and the pax were not allowed to board until after 4:30pm. My understanding that the virus takes a couple of days from time exposed until you come down with it. And yet in a little over 24 hours pax and crew had the virus in San Francisco on Monday morning.

Also I understand that the next two cruises will be late boarding as to more cleaning.

Deep cleaning does not gty anything. There are always people carrying, probably still onboard before new pax boarded. Could be with the crew/b2b pax. Its always around in some form.

I say they should be deep cleaning all the time, not just when there is an outbreak.

I assume you mean the next two cruises on the Crown?

Or do you mean the next two departing from SF?

Just posted this article on another thread if you want to take something along to pre clean your cabin etc or wipe your hands after handling utensil in buffet etc.....http://www.stopthestomachflu.com/Home/which-cleaning-products-kill-stomach-flu-viruses

Thank you JoAnne! In all my many months of research for my upcoming cruise, I had never understood that the Clorox wipes I picked up at Target are not the ones everyone is talking about. Since they were the only in-store option, that's what I got. But thanks to your link I've purchased the Real Deal from amazon. This will give us some peace of mind. Thanks a bunch!

The chemicals and processes used for a deep noro clean would pretty much destroy the ship if used constantly.

Ugh. We leave Friday. Is there a place to buy them without having them shipped?

I would try a local pharmacy, tell the Pharmacist your intentions and she/he can point you to something. Also hydrogen peroxide will kill noro and it is cheap by the bottle.

Whenever I read these threads, I wonder how they know it is noro virus, say as opposed to food poisoning? In the past I've heard medical practitioners say that most people who think they have stomach flu are actually experiencing food poisoning. Not trying to create controversy here, just curious.

I agree, but my comments about a flu shot have to do with keeping the immune system in shape, and therefore having better ability to fight off other bugs, too.

The flu shot will only protect you against the 3-4 flu viruses that are in them. You can keep the immune system in shape by building up your own immunity and not using so many antibacterial products.

They can culture it.

I worked as a nurse at a children's camp that had a Noro virus outbreak with many of the campers sick. One staff member came to camp sick and that started it. Luckily I didn't get it but the public health department came in to evaluate. We had been cleaning everything with bleach and water. They said that was exactly what we should be doing to kill the virus. The solution is 1/2 cup bleach/1 gallon of water. You could reduce this down to get a smaller amount to take on board.

Previous voyage on the Crown from Valparasio to LA had noro problem with alert final 2 days of cruise. Same ship had noro problems on the Ft Lauderdale to Valparasio legs.

There were alerts to notify medical center if you had cold, sore throat, fever

etc. as well as nausea and vomiting. They were providing Tamiflu. Don't know if there was a charge. Supposedly they had notified CDC of problems.

Better half and self contracted severe colds after Costa Rica. There is no cure

for cold virus and did not go to "sick bay". Received a call from duty nurse two days from LA at night to see if we had vomiting or diarrhea problems.

Fortunately no. would appear that the hated noro lives on.

We were on the Crown Princess with an outbreak if Norovirus. My next door neighbor and I enjoyed spotting whales. She would see one and point it out. I would do the same. One day, she wasn't outside on her balcony. Next day, same thing. I thought, "how odd!" Then I saw food being delivered to her cabin, and learned that she had Noro. Her husband never contracted it. We never contracted it either.

We were told in an announcement by the captain that ships are required to report Noro outbreaks to the CDC. There is a tiered structure that dictates severity. That's why some cruises are cancelled when Noro strikes and others are not cancelled. There has to be a certain percent of crew and passengers to be declared with Noro.

I see the Crown's name in the mix quite frequently.

We were on the Star Feb 3 to Hawaii. We were concerned about his immune system issue so we purchased wipes that specifically said they worked against Noro. Every morning we would pull some out of container, cut them in half and put them in baggies we brought from home. Whenever we went to the buffet we would use one in our hand to wrap around the serving spoons. We also wiped down the armrests and trays in the theater and the buttons in the casino. This may sound obsessive to some people but it works for us and neither of us have ever gotten sick on ships. We also follow the other suggestions on these posts.

Thank you all for you helpful comments, lets hope all on board remain healthy and enjoy the cruise!!!!

:)

Further [precqautions which we take are

If you have to use the elevators use the back of your knuckle to push the buttons and when you exit wash again

If you use the stairs use your wrist or a tissue over your hand to hold on to the hand rails and again when you can wash

The casino has a box/bottle or wipes at the counter and will give you one to use on any machine you wish to use and ofr course as soon as you get in your cabin wipe everything down specifically the TV remote and light switches with disinfectant wipes. We have never in 24 cruises contracted the virus and we have been on 75 day cruises with it active

I would think that other than the bathroom, the remote control would be one of the grimiest items in the cabin - that you handle.

Think about it. A person is sick, in the bed watching tv. Be sure you wipe it off, too.

The Crown came into port last Saturday from So. America already infected with the Norovirus. Boarding was deferred until the ship supposedly was disinfected! Looks like they still have a problem. Are the crew checked as possible carriers?

They self report.

It's maybe 1% of the passengers...

One of the biggest things to avoid is the bannisters (hand rails) in the stairwells. Do that, wash your hands with soap, and hope for the best. Princess can't be held responsible for the jerks who come on board when they KNOW they are sick...
