Norwegian cruise excursions

We are doing the 7 day Fjords cruise on the Caribbean Princess for the first time next July, visiting Stavanger, Skjolden fjord, Olden and Bergen.

I cannot find any excursions advertised yet, is it too early, or aren't there any.

Is it easy to just visit these places independently, we found the Cruiseline tours expensive in Alaska, so would like to do things independently, any recommendations or must see's?

Not on a cruise but visited both Bergen and Stavanger. Both very walkable and interesting. If you are in good shape, read up on the hike to Pulpit Rock (Priekestolen) outside Stavanger. You take the ferry to Tau, catch a waiting bus to the parking lot for the rock and then it is about a 2 hour hike to the top. Beautiful views even if you turn around part way. Return and catch the bus back to the ferry. Cost about $25-30 pp. Allow about 5-6 hours. Well worth the hike.

In Bergen there is usually a shuttle into town. Take the earliest one possible and head immediately over to the tram to the top of the mountain overlooking downtown. You will beat all of the tours and Have no wait in line. When I've come back down the line to go up can be blocks long once all of the tour buses arrive. The downtown area around the harbor is very scenic and walkable.

I believe in Stavanger is a great oil rig museum, well worth a visit.

Bergen is worth getting to the funicular early. BUT Have 40KR of Norwegian coins with you or else a credit card with a chip. Stavanger is also worth doing on your own though perhaps not as much as Bergen. If you are particularly active, you can take the trail south to one of those carved churches in Bergen. Bergen is one of the places where I've walked a marathon, 26.22 miles so go for it if you are independent.

If you like to hike around and it is a sunny day, go by cable car up to the top of Mount Ulriken. Lots of trails to walk around at the top. After we did the funicular, we caught the city bus that takes you to where you can catch the cable car. Easy to do and well worth the spectacular view.

When in Olden take the service bus to the glacier (£10ish return) instead of the ship's tour (£60ish return). Both buses follow the same route and pick you up right next to the ship, the only difference is that you don't get a waffle and a coffee on the service bus.

You won't get any help from the people in the tourist information office as they try to deny the service bus exists and try to get you to take a taxi, but the bus is real and our driver stopped the bus a couple of times to take photos of us (there was only us on it!). All in all this option saved us around £140.

Bergen and Stavanger are easy to places to see as the ship's dock centrally and don't require an excursion in my opinion as there's lots to see and do.

Check out Rodne cruises in Stavanger --lovely half day cruise.

Agree this is a wonderful 3 hour boat ride thru the Lysefjord. Book at home as they fill. The goats, waterfalls, views are fun. Especially if a sunny day.

As stated Bergen and your left over time in Scavenger are easy.

There are very few private tours available in Norway.
