Room service and to go food

I don't think they would ever say one couldn't take food from the buffet, because as you say there is additional seating outside or on some ships, one of the specialty restaurants for overflow. I'm wondering, if (and that is a big if) the rumor is true, does it have anything to do with passengers taking food out and then dropping it all over the ship. I've seen some overfill their plates in the buffet to take to their cabins and there is food all over the place, including in the elevator and down halls.

Either that and/or cleaning the mini-fridges for leftovers that weren't eaten in time.

Never thought of the mini-fridges. Maybe also to cut down on the number of plates of uneaten food in the hallways....that drives me crazy.

The only 'rumor' I heard was from someone who was posting from the ship while on a cruise and they said that O'Sheehan's was not allowing them to order food, have it wrapped up and take it back to their room. They claim that O'Sheehan's said they were told 'No Takouts'.

I don't know if this is true or not, however, IF it's true I can't believe it would also apply to the Buffet.

That's exactly what I said. I cut and pasted from someone on a ship. If Its true or not, that has yet to be determined. Since then I have been accused of making things up. I like you also think if any truth to it, it won't apply to the buffet

I hope it's not true on my last cruise I took out from O'Sheehan's

On poster apparently said that one could not take leftovers back to your cabins any longer. This is what was posted: "I am on the Gem right now. I asked at guest services about this and they told me the room service charge will go into effect next cruise (May 2) and it is true that restaurants will no longer let you take leftovers back to your cabin or have them sent there."

To those trying to rationalize the change. I'm sorry. I've been in business way too long. It is NO coincidence that the no take out policy and the room service charges happen around the same time. They're creating their own demand.

You don't need to be in business... you just need to be awake!

I never saw that post. The post I'm referring to was on a specific FB page where someone was on the ship and went to O'Sheehan's to order food to go and was told that they were instructed not to accept orders for food to go.

True? False? It's what someone posted and what I read.

I was just giving an example of where someone said, they could not take leftovers out of the restaurant any longer. And that it was not just those that want to order it to take out.

Here's the thing, there's 3 rumors in this thread regarding not taking food elsewhere- 1) O'Sheenan's 2) Specialty restaurants and 3) buffets. What about the MDR takeout since one can also do that as well during meal times - why wasn't that include in the rumors as well? And why was rumors originating from one person on the Epic in Europe and not the 2 ships in the US where the room service fee was 1st implemented and tested on?

Personally, too much reasonable doubt right now without more people backing up the claims or photo/video proof. Yes, this thread does look like ramble-rustling on purpose without proof right now - don't wait for evidence next week/month, how about right now to settle it instead of causing hysteria! (not primarily directed at you, Harriet...)

I have a friend on the Breakaway. She was told by one of the crew that since the room service fee was implemented, take out at O'Sheehans has really increased so now they are stopping take out. She said it's to force people to pay the room service fee. During my last cruise I enjoyed getting food from O'Sheehans to eat on my balcony. My son's enjoy room service but I refuse to pay for it. I will bring them food back to eat from the buffet and I hope no one tries to stop me.

I can only report on the 'rumor' that I was told about from someone on FB that was on the Breakaway. This person only mentioned O'Sheehan's.

I'll be cruising in June and will find out for myself....unless one of my friends find out first as they're cruising in May. I would believe my friend! LOL

Something I don't get is those that order a dessert knowing they are too full to eat it. Then they want to take it back to their room.

They used to really push desserts on us at Cagneys. If you said you were too full they'd tell you to take it back to the room for later. If you said you couldn't decide, they'd tell you to get two.

The few times I've taken dessert back (as opposed to going to the buffet and picking something up for a quick meal in the room) is when we've had a nice dinner and I really would like dessert, but we need to get to a show, or I'm just on the edge of being able to finish it, but know that by the time I walk back to the room, straighten things up, get stuff ready for the next morning, read the daily and plan the next day's activities, I'll be ready to break out a spoon and enjoy it in my pajamas, either on the balcony or on the bed (!), a lovely end to a wonderful vacation day.

In a suite, a box of cereal from Cagney's with the Cagney fruit dessert is a wonderful combination... don't knock it!

Maybe the next promo to be rolled out will be unlimited room service (URS),;)

I know I wont be cruising anytime soon. I have limited mobility and weakness and usually spend a lot of time on my balcony due to being tired and have used room service quite a bit when i cant make it to the venues. At almost $10. a pop I could rack up quite a charge by the end of a cruise. URS would be perfect for me.:)

Why only O'Sheehan's and not all of the other restaurants including the buffet? Having it apply to only one doesn't make any sense either. What they are probably counting on is that a majority of the passengers will respect the rule and there won't be a need for a lot of enforcement. But at the end of the day one wonders why they care about where a passenger consumes the food that at the end of the day the passenger has paid for it.

You ask why only O'Sheehan's? My answer is that this person only went to O'Sheehan's to order something to take back to the room as they have always done on previous cruises. Since they only tried at O'Sheehan's that's the only place I can report about.

I was probably the first one to mention buffets because it doesn't make sense to me to prohibit passengers from taking food back from one restaurant but not all of the others. Yes, it would be difficult for them to police the policy but they are probably counting on the fact that most passengers comply with the rules if they are aware of them.

Yes, I get that. O'Sheehan's is the only one that we know anything about. But if the policy is to make any sense at all it cannot be limited to only O'Sheehan's, it must also apply to the other dining venues onboard.

You might want to bring your own tray from home as they haven't had trays in the buffet in years

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I appreciate you telling me that! I thought that might be the case. In anticipation, I bought 3 brand new trays from Wally World. No, not 3 for me. I have 2 kids. And whether I "load" it with 3 strips of bacon and 2 eggs or 5 pieces of fresh fruit, I guarantee you people on the elevator will wish they had a tray too!

I'd like to enjoy breakfast on my tiny tiny balcony (apparently Breakaway mini suites have mini mini balconies!), so I'll squeeze my eggs and toast on the balcony and look at the beautiful ocean and thank the good lord above that I'm not upstairs trying to find a seat at the buffet, but instead spending a peaceful meal on my tiny tiny balcony! :)

I think the OP is well within the posting guidelines here, they came across a first hand account on another site and reported it here. This seems very plausible considering if you can do take out from the restaurants why would you need to pay for room service? Or how much time is it costing the room attendants to clean up and transfer all the extra dishes.... Many reasons for this too happen. The industry is changing if we like it or not.
