Room service and to go food

Last week on BA they would not let us order a pizza for takeout after we had dinner at La Cucina. I was dissappointed, I really wanted to try it. I was told that I would order pizza from Room Service.

 

Wow, thanks for letting us know!

 

NCL is really FORCING everyone to folk out $7.95 per day on room service charges. :mad:

The reports coming back are just ridiculous on the part of NCL. A kid torques off and the parents can't pack up their meal. Another couple finishes off a full meal at a restaurant and can't take some pizza with them to enjoy on their balcony and are basically told that they either had to pay for "room service pizza" or sit there and force themselves to eat a whole pie at one time. Come on, NCL!

 

I really don't know why this new policy is the straw that has broke my camel's back. Perhaps because each of the previous changes I just took a deep breath and said "Okay...I can handle this... it's no big deal in the scope of things". Perhaps enough is just finally enough and now I've crested the top of the mountain, so to speak. This is typical for my personality actually... cool, calm and collected far beyond most people's tolerance levels... then (as my kids call it) I go all "banshee" on it. It might be time to go "banshee" on it. Can someone post the email addresses to all the powers-that-be that need to hear my wrath on this matter :D. I'm REALLY, REALLY in the mood to let someone hear what I think... other than the good folks of CC :cool:

As one of the "older people", I have to respond. As you age, your ability to eat a lot at one sitting decreases, so you tend to eat more smaller meals. I am often unable to eat dessert after my meal, but know that I will want it a few hours later. What is wrong with my bringing a dessert back to my room?

Not sure harriet. Got those names from Cathy when the balcony smoking ban came out.

 

The reason I asked is because of it is Crane Gladding he is no longer with NCL due to down sizing which took place when Keven left.

I'm curious if other lines have a similar policy restricting takeout of food. Or is this another way that NCL is leading the charge.

I've sailed on several cruise lines and have never encountered anything of the sort before.

 

I think it's another way that NCL is *increasing* the charge. ;)

In the Gem in November after a couple of late nights in the casino I would stop at Blue Lagoon/ O'Sheehans and get a snack. Not sure who, at the hour, would be around to stop me from going back to my room with it.

 

I expect the company wants to say that it is not allowed and make it more difficult to do because I imagine that this has already become more and more popular with guests who still prefer to eat in their cabin and avoiding the room service fee just go to a venue and pick it up themselves.

 

Obviously not enough people fell in line over the charge and the company is looking for a way to force you to do so.

Hi Rochelle! We met on the Getaway last year. Looks like you are still having fun cruising! My husband liked the Getaway so much we are returning for another 7 days in September. Maybe we will see you again one of these days. :)

Yes, I'm late on this, but a couple of clarifications. My wife and I were on the Epic's TA from Miami, so we weren't in Europe until the trip completed. She asked a waiter at O'Sheehan's for a fruit plate with just watermelon as part of her meal, and when she didn't finish it, she walked out with it as she has done before - and got stopped by one of the managers (a vacation zero, but they don't have cards for those.) She said there was a policy that no food could be taken out of the restaurant. We had the same waiter the next day, and when my wife mentioned losing her special order plate, he said he was told a passenger got sick from eating food that had been taken back to the room and not properly refrigerated. That prompted the policy change. (This sounded like a cover story to me.)

That sucks, I agree about the cover story part. I'm sure the passengers are smart enough not to eat spoiled food.

Geri, same here, our "runners" are in-flight to MIA now (landing shortly) to board, CAS guests - scored a nice last minute deal, balcony cabin for 4 (fine for 2 grand ones, small at 3 & 6 years old) with RT air for about $2,500.

 

Will be good with a bit of collaboration on things happening onboard & surprises, etc. She looked at it and still puzzled & unclear on the wordings for the convenience fee plus the 18% gratuity charge on top, depending on what they might order - with younger children sailing ... there seemed to be no clear cut answer on the "understanding" on how it will be applied :confused:

actually as much as it does sound like a cover story, it makes some sense as well. At least no one can argue about it. Non refridgerated food can make us sick. That being said, I really don't think the reason not to allow people to take food back has much to do with getting sick.

Yes, we all know non refrigerated food can make us sick. However, I agree, that can't be the actual reason. Butlers always bring in food - cheese, fruit, chocolate covered strawberries, canapes, etc. that should all be refrigerated.

 

Many times, I'm sure, they sit out on the table for hours until the passenger returns to the room and even if the passenger is there I'm sure they can sit out for hours. Not to even bring up the subject of room service being delivered and food not being refrigerated if not eaten in one sitting.

So if you use the same argument - why do they still have room service as this food might not be properly refrigerated either?????

 

I often take my breakfast and lunch meal back to my cabin to eat on the balcony especially if the buffet is crowded.

This this this. Omg. Why would you take your leftovers? Should you happen to somehow get hungry between a giant lunch and a giant dinner, or after said giant dinner, there are so many places to get food it's ridiculous. This boggles my brain that someone would bother with leftovers. Plus if you are not in a suite, I personally don't want to eat in a tiny cabin, basically eating... where? on my bed? yuck. my personal gues is that if this really is a policy, then it is to stop rooms and hallways from getting gross and disgusting with left over food.

 

I like hot coffee first thing in the morning. My husband is always so sweet to get it for me from the buffet - with something baked. I hope you don't have a problem with this.

 

Also, diabetics may need frequent snacks. I have a co-worker with kidney issues, she's snacking often. Count your blessings if you don't need frequent small meals due to health issues.

 

But the bottom line is, I think, they want more room service that now has a charge. More profit for them. This means, more "gross and disgusting" trays with food leftovers in the hallways. We, the customers, can never win.

Wonder if they are under the assumption, that if someone is ordering room service, they are planning to eat it right after it arrives, but when they take out leftovers, they might not assume the same thing. Just a thought.

 

No one has reported that they couldn't take food back to their cabin or elsewhere from the buffet.

Which would seem to negate the sickness prevention claim as well.

 

Or maybe - since buffet food sits out for long periods anyhow - it has some magical qualities that make it sickness free?! :confused:;)

The issue wasn't whether they gave out doggy bags or wrapped food to go at the buffet (which I would be surprised if they ever did that), the issue is that it has not been reported that you can't take it out of there.
