For those who choose to stay in the Haven

Hi everyone - we are headed to the Caribbean on August 15 through the 22nd on the Getaway. We chose to stay in the Haven with our family.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to post but believe it or not I developed diverticulitis with a complication of a perforated bowel on the ship and had to be flown home and was in the hospital for most 10 days and almost died. It really sucked.

I now have my feathers together and wanted to see if you things about the Haven experience.

This is the first time we stayed actually in the Haven – we have stayed in suites on other ships that don't have Haven area with in them and the difference is like night and day.

The Haven is a ship with in a ship. I could've easily stayed with in the Haven my entire cruise and you been incredibly happy. The getaway is a huge ships – I want to say it holds almost 5000 people which is like the size of my little town. I'm not sure I will go back to such a huge ship.

But I will always stay within a Haven area because it was amazing.

welcome, glad you are ok now, but I can imagine how bad this must have been for you. I had a similar situation but at least I was at home and I didn't have the perforagted bowel, but I did hemorage pretty badly. Anyway, that is another story and not for CC.

I haven't been in the havens, but our daughter and friends did last Feb. She loved the experience and is now wondering how she is going to adjust to a regular, everyday balcony cabin again. As for the ship size, we were on a Princess ship about 3 years ago: held about 3800 and deided the new, mega ships are not our thing.

They are not my thing either, Nita. As you know, my favorite ship is the sun. What do you think is going to happen down the road… Will our smaller ships disappear? I can't imagine not having the choice to avoid the mega ships.

I'm a huge fan of the Sun, too. I wonder about the future of cruising, too. Our last big ship was some years ago now, when RC was launching its behemoths. Too big for us.

But, that seems to be all that is coming out of the shipyards now. Personally, I would love to see more Jewel sized ships, with better quality and/or itineraries than the floating amusement parks. Sooner or later the smaller ships will be old and leave the fleet. we can only wonder if mainline companies will reverse this trend. Only time will tell

I can't imagine the smaller ships not being around. There are many ports, I'd imagine, that the larger ships just couldn't get to.

I agree with you. My preference is the Jewel class ships, and I do hope that cruiselines will realize the value of these, and build them again. Smaller ships can fit into many ports which the behemoths cannot.

On the Jewel or Dawn class ships, one does not need to make a rezzie for the MDR or Stardust Theater. Just arrive at the theater before the show begins, and you'll find seats.

OP, Thank goodness that you recovered from the diverticulosis. Be well, and many happy cruises to you.

Nita, tell your daughter that I was once offered an upgrade to a suite which I loved. Our next cruise found us back in a regular balcony cabin, which we enjoyed as well. Not as much as the suite of course, but we were on a cruise ship----not at home or work. That's what counts for me.

More upscale lines are grabbing the small ships .Oceania just bought the former Ocean Princess will transform it and create Siren It holds 600 pax

Been on Ocean princess ..it is small ...think very small but it handled the sea remarkably well .

The captain called it his little white lady .

I went to Greenland with it ....surrounded by icebergs ...took a picture of them floating around the ship .It was Unique .....there are still some small ones out there

But of course these are far more epensive than the big ships ...cabins are comfy and service is fine .Food is excellent on Oceania ...you might like it

I recommend French Polynesia '......awesome place ...crystal clear turquoise waters .....amazing .we stayed 3 days in the harbour of Bora bora ....eating outdoors with that view was stupendous

Hope to go back someday

I like the ship within the ship concept. Been in 2 suites on NCL, both smaller, older ships (Sky, Sun) without the Haven though. Cabins were not the greatest, but service for suite guests was outstanding.

I found another cruise line I will be trying out a ship within a ship concept for better then 1/2 the price of a Haven....I have only heard top notch reviews. Specialty dining room included along with all drinks, including in cabin frig, for 7 days, plus other perks. There are less then like 70 cabins offered, leaving the lounge, pool area, and restaurant not crowded at all.

Will make for a nice spring break, without the crowd for most of the day.

Michele, that Fuji and Bora Bora cruise is on my bucket list. Flight is included in price of fare out of LA too for the cruise line based there touring all the islands.

So glad you are better wordsjustfly, and sorry your vacation was cut short. I hope you get a do over soon. I am looking forward to my haven suite next month (a treat for our 40th anniversary). I do plan to spend a lot of time in the Haven sun deck and pool area as the crowds around the main adult pool look to busy and loud for my tastes. That said, if the only way I could afford to cruise was in an inside, I would do so, and try to find the quietest areas to lounge and try to eat at off times. This will be the largest ship I've sailed on, so I've yet to see exactly how I'll feel about it!

I'm sorry to hear about your diverticulitis, my mom has that so I understand how painful it can be. But my mom's doctor said its not deadly so idk why yours was. Can you do a full Haven review? I'm going to be staying in the haven for my first time coming up and kind of wanted a full understanding and review what it's like.

The OP mentioned a complication of a perforated bowel. I have a mild, non-chronic, form that most of the 5 - 10% of the population with diverticulitis have. I have no idea the pain people with "Complicated Diverticulitis" have, which is probably the diagnosis the OP has. It is indeed life threatening and described as extremely painful. The rest of us have discomfort and pain, but nothing on the scale I suspect the OP went through. The mortality rate for those patients is about 10% from a quick Google search so yeah, I think we should accept the OP's word on it. Someone in the hospital for days for diverticulitis probably was in very real danger of dying.

So to the OP, I hope you recover fully and regain complete health.

The PG are the best. Done the 11 day and doing the 10 day next year. While not a lot of traffic, the PG board here on CC has tons of info going back to some nice photo reviews. Fiji isn't visited often by PG so not much info out there but there are many on the 7 day and some on the 10 and 11 day.

Yes, the PG.

I follow a couple who do world cruises. He posts after port visits nightly. NZ and Aus were on their last World Cruise and he had real nice things to say plus pictures of course.

Hey there- I'm the OP with the acute Diverticulitis and I also had a perforation in my bowel. I have been home only about 3 weeks from my hospital stay. I am taking it very slowly.

I am one of the lucky ones who lived to tell about it. Thank you for all of your kind thoughts and words. I was in the hospital 10 days. I'm happy to give you the name of my surgeon and show you my CT Scan and hospital tab of roughly 38k not including individual specialists bill. I had a team of 5.

If you were truly interested in what happened to me feel free to email me or send me a private message and I'd be happy to send you my cell number and have a chat.
