Cost of cruising

8 day last year was $2200. For 2 adults balcony room, pre-paid gratuities, flights...rental car and hotel were with points as my DH travels for work a lot. On board, excursions and souvenirs was probably $500.

The cruise we're about to go on was $1500 cruise only for 8 day OV. Flights this time were on airline vouchers that we got from being bumped from flights last fall, and rental car and hotel with points again. We really take advantage of those traveling husband perks.

Both Carnival, by the way. It obviously varies a lot!

We are a family of 4, always get a balcony, cruise usually 7 nights (8 nights this March though), and live in Florida so drive to port (pay for off site and sometimes on site parking, depending on port). I hardly ever do ship sponsored excursions but do book at least 1-2 private tours per trip. My husband and I always run up a pretty good bar tab and we also pay for the after hour Night Owl camps for kids and other varies expenses.

That being said I would guess we spend overall $2800- $4500 a trip.

DW and I usually come in around $3500 for 7-8 night Caribbean, Lido balcony cabin, drive to port from Central FL home and don't usually do any excursions just tip a few back each afternoon and evening on Lido and in clubs as well as stay conservative in the casino. We tend to cruise spring break and early fall each year. Better value than the all-inclusive we dearly love but still love the service of all-inclusive.

We tend to spend much more on the cruise accommodations than onboard.

MSC Divina Yacht Club April 2015 to Bermuda - Cabin 4122.00 + 1500 airfaire + 250.00 hotel. Onboard charges including 2 excursions was $350.00.

Carnival Freedom Nov. 2015. Ocean suite - $ 1400. Parking $45.00 Onboard charges $75.00.

Caribbean Princess Jan 2016 - Cruise - $3699.00 + 75.00 to park the car. Final bill $34.25 after $250 OBC applied.

It's a fair question and the resulting replies will give you some rough guidelines.

We do not usually spent much if any money aboard ship. If we do, we are talking $50 or less TOTAL.

We almost always drive to port so gas = 200-600 depending on which vehicle we take and the gas prices. (small vehicle for 2 or big vehicle for 7-10ppl)

Cruise Fare including included gratuities ranges from 1400-1800 (2 of us) and 5500 (10 of us in spa cabins).

We do excursions, but not ship excursions. We spend from 40-120 pp on these in each port. Some people drink, we like to spend the day on a catamaran. Sometimes that costs more ;) So one week may avg 250pp in excursions for 2 of us. When it's all of us, it is less pp because we just charter a vessel.

Once the cruise fare & grats are taken care of, all you really need to do is get yourself to the ship. You don't HAVE to spend a dime over that. Everything after that is optional and varies in costs.

Thanks for all the responses. Just trying to see if im overspending!

Were spending about $4000 on our upcoming trip. 2 of us, balcony room, driving to port, excursions, sail n sign card, and spending 3 nights in NOLA, plus money for NOLA. We will be gone 11 days total.

Cant wait!

Not being "rude", but...

What if I told you I spent an average of $15,000 per cruise?

Does it have any meaning?

What if I said $1500?

What does it mean? NOTHING.

You need to specify more parameters. What type of cabin, pre-cruise hotel type, airfare (first class or coach), etc. etc.

Just trying to see what the norm is.

And if your taking cruises costing $15,000 I want to hitch a ride in your luggage! Sounds like a great trip!

Everyone is different I suppose. Balcony vs inside room alone will make numbers change along with when you go. I booked my first cruise balcony room new years eve cruise which is way more costly. Drove to new Orleans the night before stayed in hotel and parked at port drove home and spent an extra 160.00 to board my dog..that alone will make the numbers change. Bought way to many t-shirts and ciggies too. I would say if I had to guess around 6000.00

We spent around 8000 last year on 4 cruises. 2 adults and 2 kids. 2 on Carnival and 2 on NCL with kids sail free. And we drive to ports. But with other costs it was probably around 10k

Well I guess for us we have anywhere from 2 to 4 peeps cruising..typically we'd never spend more than 300 bucks including grats per cruise but DH and I love our casinos..rofl...I bring about 1800 per cruise...I try to only book casino rates/ bounceback/pack n play rates so I have more money to play with.

We never win big but I don't want to spend money on the cabin cost AND on the casino...

That whole 1800 bucks is shore excursions, travel insurance through my auto policy also..I bring the same amount no matter how many days the cruise is...only once did I have to hit the ATM for 300 bucks ;) Usually I bring some money home

edited to add we do not fly into ports..we drive to Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Port Canaveral or Jacksonville

Very relevant question to cruise company. Cruise lines always track on average how much a cruiser would spend on everything they sell down to the last dollar per unit. They use this info to tailor their marketing campaign and do budget forecast and financial comparisons with their business.

Hello,

On average, how much do you spend per cruise? Total cost of everything: Cruise, travel, excursions, sail n sign card, etc.

Thanks!

Are we to include pre and post cruise related expenses, such as boarding the dog(s) at a kennel, long term parking at the airport, flights to and from the port, hotel stay the night before (and dinner), cab fare from the airport to the port, and back after the cruise? If so, for us it would be roughly $3,500 to

$4,000 all totaled.

I fail to see your objection. The OP question was way to generic. There were too many variables possible from size of a ship, where it's going, type of cabin.

Obviously that didn't bother all the other people who have responded to the OP. Mom was right. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

We have a rule that we spend no more than £100pp for the cruise part but then again we do take longer cruises 12+ days.

Our 12/13 day cruises (staying in oceanview type cabins) usually cost us around £3900ish ($6000) for this side of the pond and £5500 ($8250) for US/Further afield. This includes train/plane fares, a few nights in a hotel and onboard/port spending...we usually on book 1 excursion btw.

The cost is high because we have to do school holidays but our onboard spending is low as we usually are able to bring on our own drinks and don't gamble or do spa things.

We try to keep it between $3000.00 and $3500.00(for two adults), including flights, cruise, hotels(pre and post cruise). Now with our Canadian dollar tanking that may be hard to do in the next while. We also travel in high time(Christmas/NYE) when prices are high. If we can we stay in a balcony, but will not hesitate to stay in a cheaper category to keep our costs where we want it.

Our 2 person 7 day porthole cruise in September on freedom with Gratuities and insurance is 1290 with 50 on board credit. We are going to spend about $200 per stop on excursions and food equaling $600. We will probably spend $100 buying each of our kids a gift. We spend about $300 to and from home on gasoline and $100 on a hotel the night before embarking along with about 75 in meals traveling. We may spend $300 on board but we are very light drinkers, will do chefs table ($150) and steak house ($70). Those are both optional. I always take a handful of dollars and fives to handout as tips on top of the gratuities I prepaid. Our first cruise was $1200. We spent $50 on a hotel ate one time on the way there and one time on the way back cheaply. We didn't go on any excursions. Instead we would pay a minimal amount of money to a cab and go to a beach that might cost us $10 to get in. I think in Grand Cayman we went to the 7 mile Beach for a five dollar cab ride We were too broke to pay tips so we hardly ever ordered any room service. We paid our gratuities and spent $82 (drinks) in optional things we didn't have to buy on the ship. We had prepaid our trip and had minimal money in our pockets once we got there but we had an absolutely fantastic time! All your food is paid for and there are many things to do without spending money on the ship. You can each take a 12 pack of pop and a bottle of wine each on board with you so you can make this trip as expensive or inexpensive as you want it to be. We always get porthole rooms because they are as big as a balcony room and laid out like a balcony room but they are about the price of an interior room. We have paid for about balcony and it just wasn't worth it for us but many people can't live without it. Like I said, it can be as cheap or as extravagant as you want it to be.
