What was your upgrade offer and what did you bid

There are a lot of posts in this thread, and I browsed a few pages for the answer, but figured I’d just ask.

Has anyone in a solo cabin ever gotten an upgrade? What if I were to call and ask for one? I’m less than a month out from sailing.

Thanks!

S

Ultimately, I think it's important to understand that cruise lines, like a casino, won't offer you anything unless there's something in it for them. And with their ability to exclusively control the awarding of bids, they have a lot of opportunity to shuffle the deck so that it's as advantageous to them as possible. Who can blame them, they're in business to make money.

That being said, still love cruising and have found that they are great ways to vacation.

Just returned from the Getaway. I was booked in a regular balcony cabin, actually a “bump out” cabin so the balcony was much lager than those on either side if us, but anyways I bid $1,000 pp for a Haven upgrade. Two days before sailing I received an email it was not accepted. Didn’t matter. Saved money in the long run. Will book the Bliss for next year and again try and get the larger bump out cabin.

Thanks for sharing your bid. To me it seemed like a really good bid, what cabin(s) did you bid on? Hope you find some sun in NH!

Thanks for the info! Can you share what Haven category you bid on? Thanks!

Oops...just got the email that they were not able to accept our offer. Maybe next time! :)

What cabin did you bid for and what did you bid? Sorry you didn’t “win”. hopefully better luck next time but I’m sure you will have a great time anyway.

So today I received an email from cruise critic for specials on your up coming cruise The amount for the room we want is less than what we have already paid plus our bid and has a lot more perks. So I called Norwegian and asked if I could just get that rate. I was told they don't price match. I found this ridiculous since the other companies should be price matching to them. I was told if we cancel our existing cabin because we are only a few days out we would lose everything we already paid for and cannot upgrade for the email price. How on earth does this make any sense??? Norwegian should be ashamed.

No, this is the way it works, it's like airline pricing. The cruises often slash prices past final payment to fill the ship. If you want to steal a rock-bottom deal then you need to wait to the last minute to book. Of course you then risk the ship being sold out, so its a gamble.

Has anyone else only been given one upgrade option? We have two rooms, both got offers to bid, each only has one option available. Inside guarantee - only option to bid on is outside. It was my understanding that we "should" have been given balcony as an option too no? I emailed to ask but I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else because I see NO mention if it - people talk about six bids etc - not just one.

Are there still balcony cabins available on your cruise?

Yes, we only had one option. We are with 4 people in a ocean view and could only bid on mini-suite because 4 is too many for a balcony room on our ship (Dawn)

Norwegian has nothing to be ashamed about, as the other poster commented, this is always the case when a line is trying to fill unsold cabins at the last minute. However, have you called and asked how much it would be for you to purchase the room you want? Sometimes it works out to be a deal. Worth trying.

Hi, what is a bump out cabin? We are sailing on Getaway in March and a larger cabin would be great.

I didn't know that those already booked in Haven accommodations received upgrade offers.

What was the (website) price difference between your original cabin and the new one?

Tom

Yes, we book Haven and bid to upgrade all of the time. We always get what we bid. [emoji6]. We save thousands.

Interesting. So, you intentionally book a lower end suite with the expectation of "movin' on up"? When you're making that bid, what range on the meter does yours fall into?

Ship: NCL Epic

Sail Date: 04/07/2018

Itinerary: 15-day transatlantic (from PCN to BCN)

Made our original booking with CAS (Pearl status)

Original room: complimentary Interior stateroom upgraded to BC mid ship Balcony for 300$ pp and then an additional 55$ pp for AFT balcony (B1), ended up in a M2 mini suite mid-ship on deck 13 (M2 were at the same rate as the B1 AFT balcony).

Received our upgrade offer at 80 days prior to sailing

Bid for Haven min/max range amount:

The Haven (H5/H6 or H9): 500 pp to 2,000 pp

H4: 750 pp to 3000 pp

H2: 1250 pp to 3500 pp

Will confirm what our bids were if/when we will receive confirmation of an upgrade. So far our offers are still pending and havn't heard anyone on our roll call who already got theirs accepted.

We checked with CAS and their charge to upgrade to an H9 would be 2245 pp (although we would get all four offers included). If the upgrade is granted (from the advantage program) fine, otherwise will still be very happy with the M2.

Well, we will see how this goes - we sail in April, and I just bid on 3 rooms - 2 in the Haven and 1 just to upgrade from a regular balcony to a mini-suite (basically because I'm not in love with my current cabin location, and the balcony/room might be a smidge bigger.) According to Plusgrade, all of my bids were on the line between Fair and Poor, so I doubt any of them will be accepted - but nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

I actually wouldn’t call any of the Haven suites a “lower end suite” but we always only bid in the poor to fair range since we are already in the Haven. Anything we win is just gravy...

Well, there are certainly higher end suites - was not trying to diminish any category (from insides up to top suites).

But I concur that the difference between a non-Haven cabin and any Haven cabin is marked.

Although this topic is of interest to me - I don't see ourselves taking advantage of it, as we're rather particular about booking a specific category and location. Probably the same reason that we'd never book a guarantee as well.

The thing about the Haven is, there is never really a “bad Suite” so as I said it’s all gravy. We only cruise in The Haven so I have no idea what the other categories look like.

I agree with Tom - when I book my cabin, I take a lot of time to make sure it's the one I want. This trip was a work reward booked through a travel agent, and by the time we got to cabin selection, the ones I wanted for our date were gone. (Of course, we only got the reward notification in December, and I'm usually looking at cabins farther than 5 months out. There just wasn't time on this one.)

So I'm not in love with the current cabin - so we shall see. Do they tell you which cabin it will be if they approve your bid?

Yes, they do tell you. You have to keep in mind that when you bid on Haven suites there are very few to choose from. For example we have won bids for Owners Suites and there are only two of that category on the entire ship. I guess our bidding process is a bit simpler.

Yes, correct. I’m also particular about my cabin but if I’m bidding on a 2BR Haven Suite I know it can only be in a specific location. I think being particular really only comes into play when bidding on the non-Haven categories.

That's good to know - thanks!

I think if we got the Haven upgrade, I don't think I'd care where the cabin is - it's the Haven!!!
