Thanks for the comparisons Roy.

Interesting on the crocs for the crew on the outside decks. Lester (our favourite Retreat bar guy) did say it was the new uniform - fleet wide. Wondering if the Rotterdam got it first? Being a flagship and all?

Most of our internet issues were due to the crossing I think. Strange as when we crossed on the P'dam I never lost internet last time. Must be the path that was chosen?

At least now we have ports where I can get a bit of wifi (without pushing DH's patience) so it looks like I may not have to start a "go fund me" account for kazu's internet. LOL.

From what I remember, the new uniform for pool, bar service and Lido staff (white polo or button up with orange trim, khaki shorts and orange belt) were introduced on Koningsdam last year and has been rolling out fleet-wide since. We were told the Koningsdam was making all the new uniforms for the fleet and would take some time to get all ships outfitted with it. (I think there was a Captain Albert blog entry that mentioned this.) We saw it introduced on Prinsendam during our Amazon Explorer cruise in December 2016 and it was in use on Nieuw Amsterdam in January 2017. I've seen no Crocs on any crew (besides your photos) and would be a bit surprised if they were becoming a standard as they are not considered safety shoes.

The orange is prevalent Rich. Even the bar waiters have orange loops where buttons will go.

I'm not sure on the crocs. That's just what I was told by the staff but they also said that they were a lot more comfortable and very anti slippery.

Other than that, I am in the dark. Just what they are telling me. On the changeover so time will soon tell.

Cheers as we sail from Barcelona to Marseille.

Thanks again for the live report. So fun to be on the cruise with you! Tasting the sangria now

I noticed Crocs worn by the HAL staff at both pools on the Eurodam in March. I also remember the Pinnacle Grill staff and Neptune Lounge staff had new uniforms with a unique collar.

Thanks for the flower pics. They were incredible. It reminded me to find the collapsible vase! I

Enjoy today

Finally got free internet service here in Marseille France andhave the time to post something to the “Live” thread. Everything has been going well for us on the cruise with the TA portion of the cruise smooth thank heavens. Weather has also been good with temps in thehigh 60’s F to low 70’s.The firstM&G was well attended with good participation from everyone. We had no problems with our keys the firstday but I am now into my 3rd key card.

Hi Dave yes we are on the cruise and it’s easy to spot me onthe sail away pics from FLL.I have nothad the chance to read all of Jacqui’s thread so probably missed some comments.

Thanks Jacqui for all the work on the Roll Call thread andthe Sail Away out of Barcelona, nice job!

Good morning from the lovely Rotterdam. It's April 13th and we are in Barcelona.

The ship is a bustle with people getting ready to disembark.

And I was busy last night bidding adieu to many whose company we have enjoyed.

Haven't seen all our roll call members that are leaving, of course. But I wish them all safe travels home.

Very glad that a number are staying on and we will be welcoming more this afternoon.

Yesterday was a quiet day as people were packing and I took advantage of it to check the name tags for the meet and greet as the "name tag factory" closed early as I was preparing to cruise. I finished off all the ones I think that are coming today that posted after the "factory" closed. Kazu had made extras. They are all ready to go

2d8b68877b14a877afbb79ad7b58b92b.jpg

We are doing the meet and greet / sail a way today because this cruise is so port intensive and if we waited for the first sea day, it would be well into the cruise.

The day in Barcelona will be short as we need to be back on board by 3 for the life boat drill. Uggh. But, safety first.

Shuttle cost round trip in Barcelona was 4 euros pp. As usual it takes you to the Colon monument (Christopher Columbus). It's easy to find for your return.

We headed up las Ramblas for a bit and quickly made our way to the side streets and Barri Gottic. We have been to Barcelona many times - both day trips and land stays and always enjoy the Barri Gottic. The small winding streets were no escape from the crowds though.

Aside from it being Semana Santa and many school children given cultural tours, it turned out that there were 40,000 students in Barcelona for a soccer tournament and this was the last night. YIKES. No (normally) quiet street was safe.

So, DH and I decided to take a little wine break after a while and I put him to work to call my planned tour in Huelva. We had a private tour booked but the company (which had great ratings) claims they have closed. I had found another one but they prefer you call and, it seems you have more luck from Spain. (I'll see my cell phone bill later - LOL). I had all the questions written down for DH so I put his Spanish to work and Voila! Tour is back on. It will be 5 hours as opposed to HAL's 3 and goes places HAL's doesn't.

This part of history is important to us and while many dislike Huelva for whatever reason, it is actually a port we are looking forward to.

It's a ways to go though, but I was much relieved to have this back in place.

We did a bit more wandering on our little side streets and seeing no relief and knowing our time was short, we decided we had best head back to the ship. Kazu doesn't like being jammed in with crowds and her elbow is still sensitive to being banged.

The Easter treats in Barcelona were really looking yummy

Happy to say that the scanners worked for our lifeboat drill, so it was a lot more painless than the last one.

Back to the ship in time, we ended up going to the Mariner's reception. The motive was not to get a free drink (although we had one) but so I could get this picture. Yes, the two HAL flagships were in port at the same time facing each other.

995c8c51ce42e54960b00626ea478892.jpg

It's hard to get cruise ships pics at the Barcelona port and the only angle that was going to work was the Crow's Nest. So since it was closed to a private party (Mariner's reception), we were "forced" to go.

After the lifeboat drill it was time for our Meet and Greet. Always great to meet your roll call and I think everyone had fun. Realizing it was embarkation day I had requested HAL just save us the space and not worry about coffee, tea and cookies. But, it was happy hour and the munchies were flowing. Our wonderful waitress made a special effort to offer our group a bunch.

I wisely set the laundry out that night knowing they would be backlogged on the new embarkation day (and it was back the next day). It's a lot of work to do laundry on HAL - stuff a bag and fill out the form - LOL.

Before we knew it, it was time for dinner and we headed to the dining room. Pretty much everyone in our area was new so our wine steward and attendants were pretty tied up explaining things to the new passengers. We are having dinner in the PG tomorrow night so by then, everything should have settled down.

I didn't post last night because I was a tad ticked at our DRM. We went for dinner at 7:45 as we should and got accosted because we were walking in at the appointed time and were literally attacked in an accusatory tone with a "didn't you get your new card? We are on European time. Dinner is at 8". Needless to say, we were embarrassed and frankly, I have never been given a new card on a Collectors cruise. To me, the polite think would have been to say "I'm sorry Mr. & Mrs., our dining room time has changed to 8 - we would be pleased to welcome you back at 8 pm". I guess I was in the service industry too long. LOL. We were embarrassed and are uncomfortable when that happens.

We hit the casino after dinner and I think DH better come with me more often. At least I was up that night.

Good morning from the lovely Rotterdam. A blessed Good Friday and Passover to those who take part in either.

It's April 14th here and we are in Marseille, France.

Ah lovely Marseille. We were only 1/2 hour behind our planned leaving time (doing a diy here since the next three days are tour intensive)

Here is our When and Where for today:

5fb9b3ba875d4dfd06382cf71bc50592.jpg

1faffe458a8c703607ee78c94578bc30.jpg

A note on some "misinformation" in the When & Where and, in fact, in our turnaround instructions yesterday. Out in transit instructions were to take our passports, in transit cards and key cards with us. But, at the talk, they mentioned a colour copy of the passport so I asked our concierge about this. Turns out our turnaround instructions were in error and all we needed was our colour photocopy. One place I don't like taking my passport is Barcelona so I was glad I asked. For those doing an in transit here - because you are in transit you do not even go through immigration since you are returning to the ship. There was never even a time we showed our colour copies.

In today's When and Where, it said that the non Europeans should take their passports in Marseille.. When I called to check, I was told that it was "misinformation" and passports were not required. So, lesson learned. Double check.

Since we have been here before and already seen Notre Dame de La Garde, we had planned to explore the old port. The shuttle cost (return) was $14 US. I wasn't sure if that was misinformation or not since euro is the currency of choice here, but I put the US $ and euros in my purse and off we headed. Turned out that it was charged to your on board account so we needed neither - LOL. So, it was indeed $14 US.

The shuttle dropped us off at a very convenient location to the old port. And we were there in time for the fish market. The place is alive with all kinds of wonderful fresh seafood.

When we all were on the Westy last year for Hawai`i and So Pac, as I was continuing on and my whole dining group was leaving, my waiter inquired about my seating arrangement for the next five days. That night before would have been the perfect time to mention the new dining time for the 'hangers-on' [those they can't get off the ship-no matter what they try :D ;p] and to make sure you all knew the new time. Seems a simple plan to me, considering how many pax were disembarking, to let the few continuing ones know the new schedule.

Windows update

In the last few days my once respectable internet has become glacial. A big part of this seems to be automatic updates on Windows 10 and I’ll relay my experience in case it may be of use to others.

Windows 10 is supposed to be transparent to users except the occasional restart but that is not the case with a slow wifi connection. It says that it doesn’t do downloads on a “metered” internet connection but doesn’t get either specific or very helpful.

My internet situation finally got so bad I stood in line with the techspert on the Zaandam. It even took a little time for her to figure it out but here’s what I found. While Windows says it doesn’t update while on a metered connection it isn’t automatic. Here’s what I did:

Open “settings”

Click network settings.

Click wifi

Click “manage known networks”

Click “Whateverdam - Guest”

Click the “properties” box

Turn on “set as metered connection”

This must be done for each individual network where desired. I went ahead and did it while thinking about it for each Crystal ship as well as the Koningsdam. I’ll be sure and try to remember it in the fall for the Amsterdam and Prinsendam.

Hope this might help you or somebody else.

Also, on the dining room it seems like we generally get a letter at the end of a segment of a collectors cruise. That would be the perfect place to place a reminder of a change in dining time.

What are your plans in Provence, jacqui? Love ❤️ it there.

We have great plans Sheila.

Going with Ingrid of Kultours (one of my favourite top guides).

Heading to Nice and then Haute de Cagnes (not touristy as buses can't get there) and then on to Vence. Vence has the mosaic of Chagall and the Matisse Chapel outside.

I know the views will be spectacular. I will be posting a ton of pics if people can put up with it and I can get free wifi in Monaco. We are there until nearly midnight - so I may just get caught up (again).

Enjoy today

Words of warning. The collapsible vase could not support these flowers. The South African/Madeira ones are VERY heavy.

They need a vase. Thankfully I already had one because of 1of4's kind gesture, but we are in Nice tomorrow. (Their flower market is fabulous) so I suspect the collapsible vases will be put to use tomorrow.

I reminded DH they have flowers and he just winked (he already told me I was done flower wise). LOL - he likes them as much as I do. That's why I have too many at home.

Cheers as we sail the Cote d'Azure heading to Monaco.

Uggh on your internet complications Roy.

I leave my laptop at home and just bring my Ipad.

We got our cruise log but I saw no mention of fixed dining times.

I agree - there, a letter, a card, whatever. We hate coming at the wrong time and feeling "stupid".

There are no fixed dining times in our When and Where's either.

Or, if there are, I am just plain blind. LOL.

I must say, I am so glad I subscribed to your live posts. I have been enjoying them as they are emailed daily. I have been resisting posting anywhere much as it takes time to do the pics.

Hi Carol,

Happy to see you here.

KISS works so well doesn't it?

I so agree. Our table is set for the entire 30 days and now that you mention it, on past cruises someone always came along and made sure that we wanted to keep the table, change, whatever.

Nothing this time. But yes, we were at dinner the last night and no one said anything to us.

I do read my cruise log, the stuff that comes and our When and Where and there was nothing.

It's over now and we had a fabulous dinner at the PG tonight so life is good.

Geez -- didn't realize how far behind I have gotten. Too many doctor appointments and Joe having another stupid accident.

I like the way handles the food classes by not allowing people to eat what they have "cooked" -- healthier.

Love that you are able to fill your cabin with lots of fresh flowers -- I love having them in the TV room where we spend a lot of time.

Your reports and pictures are wonderful.

When we used to eat in the dining room and were on Collector Cruises, near the end of the first segment, we were always asked if we wanted the same table. We never got a card notifying of us of time changes -- especially when we finished the repositioning cruises and then doing Alaskan cruises -- and one time we arrived 15 minutes late to dinner. They almost gave our table away thinking we were eating somewhere else. HAL needs to get a better system.

Yes, that's how it always was for us too KK.

I think they know we are very happy with our table. So, no issue there but the dining time change would have been nice.

We are in Monte Carlo and I am hoping that the free wifi I have found works but I am wondering.

So here is our When and Where from today.

We had dinner at the PG last night and it was wonderful. We were in Marseille and found a lovely wine store. And I mean LOVELY. Prices were very good IMO and we brought three bottles on and happily paid corkage.

DH doesn't like to carry wine bottles so I did and brought this one to the PG. The wine stewards' eyes opened.

DH thought it was excellent. I am no POA1 and am not a connoisseur but DH recommends this red wine.

And our amuse bouche. Very good and we enjoyed it.

We have a private tour scheduled with Ingrid of Kultours. I've used her before and have been here before so I planned an itinerary to add some new things that we haven't done.

Here is our guide Ingrid

I am going to try DH's patience with my need for free wifi, but I am going to try it a tad more and will do some more on the ship and finish in Livorno if need be. Our guide has wifi in his van. YAY.

So today is April 15th and we were in Monaco. 44,000 people commute to Monaco every day as it is too expensive for many to live. Our guide lives in Nice.

We started our day with a visit to her "secret spot". La Turbie.

From there, you can see so much.

It really is incredible. We could even see the Rotterdam from there. And we had views of Italy, France & Monaco.

The Romans conquered this land long ago and remains still abound this area.

295d635e27e334bcd88772d7df7b9882.jpg

We are going to visit places where the buses can't go. No tour buses. No regular tours, but it is Easter so it will be busy.

The only place where they go is Nice but we were there before them. The joys of private tours.

On our way...

Please bear with me - there's a lot more to come and lot better.

Cheers from Monte Carlo.

Gerry is right. 5* Mariners get one bottle per person corkage free at embarkation, just like everyone else.

I wis h they would let us 5** solo cruisers who pay for double occupancy though we sail alone in our cab in, bring two bottles. :) Would be a nice thank you f for all those cruise days we have enjoyed on HAL ships :).

Our itinerary today included Nice - to the old part of the town, Vence & Haute de Cagnes.

As we got the heck out of Dodge (Monte Carlo), Ingrid told us that the only way Monte Carlo could grow was to reclaim land from the sea.

When Italy decided to dig their hundreds of tunnels for travelling faster, Monte Carlo too all the rubble from that digging to fill in a portion of the sea so that they could expand. It's the only way they can and they plan on doing more.

Most can't afford to live in Monte Carlo proper. It's just too expensive. 10 square feet of space if abut 28,000 - 95,000 euros.

As you looked at views and as we travelled there are numerous villages. This is because back in the old days the people wanted to avoid the pirates - they pillared, plundered and burned homes so the pirates were feared and avoided. People took to the hills and did not live near the sea. Thus all the lovely little villages on the French Riviera.

Our first visit was to Nice. Before 1860, Nice was not in France. People spoke Nicoise & Italian. Nice was spelt Nissa. On a lot of streets in the old town you will see the street sign in French 1st and then the old language.

As we walked through the old town, Ingrid pointed out a wonderful chocolatier. They are famous. Their Easter treats were unbelievable.

We trundled down the lovely winding streets (so different than modern Nice) and came upon a cheese maker (cheese is famous here) who gave us tastes of two cheeses. The truffle cheese was unbelievable.

We continued on our enchanting walk and were struck with the beautiful builidings.

Apartments are very small, so most of the time is spent outside. And what a great place to spend it. Lots of lovely restaurants. All the butchers, etc. Are here so no one needs a car.

We stopped at a patisserie so Ingrid could give us a taste of French food. It was a delectable thing, sweet but made with Swiss Chard so we could justify it was healthy. LOL. Forgot to take a food porn pic but never fear, they will be coming.

This ice cream spot was very tempting. Over 150 kinds and flavours I would have never thought of or dreamed of.

We passed the market and were given some free time there. I don't have to tell you which section kazu headed to...

Yup, the flower market. I had promised DH I wouldn't get any more but he was busy pointing at the different ones with "how about this?".

I was a good girl and only spent a very few euros (10)

Then we were off to Vence. Not St. Paul's de Vence, but Vence.

A beautiful spot, we were in the old town and after checking Ingrid had made a reservation for us Crepiere Brotonne. Yes, we were all going to have crepes.

They come in salty (main meal crepes) and sweet (dessert type crepes).

Here's our little group all set to enjoy our lunch.

3128321248d2a722d52e89fe99b9e4ca.jpg

You can see the old doors (still in use) in the pic.

4 of the group ordered the cider, but since we have savoured that flavour, Dh and I decided to try the local beer. We relied on our server and it was very good.

Ingrid chooses lunch spots well so we don't waste too much time but still get to savour the flavour.

Ready for a bit of food porn????

The day was only 1/2 done and as usual, Ingrid had saved some good stuff. She knows where the buses go and where they can't and like this one, the next one can't be got to either.

To be continued once I can type, copy and paste.

Happy April Fool's Day everyone!!!

I am already behind so have some catching up to do.

I neglected to thank my kind benefactors for the

Many, many thanks to Gail and the 4of4. It is beautiful and being lovingly cared for.

Now, I have to go back to yesterday. What a great day. We have two guest speakers. The first is Stephen Mings who is talking about the Pirates of the Caribbean.

The second is Steve Ragnall who is focusing on history on Transatlantic Crossing. Yesterday's was the fastest ship to cross the Atlantic. Today's is Columbus and what led to his passage to America. This is really good for our cruise since we go to Huelva on the 2nd segment which is where Christopher Columbus stayed while awaiting $ from Queen Isabella of Spain. His crew sailed from there and there are replicas of his ships at La Rabida in Spain. (And, yes, we are going to see the monastery where he stayed, etc.)

We had a session of Ask the Captain yesterday. The showroom was packed and deservedly so. Our Captain (Marco Carsjens) is a very congenial man. Great personality and invited anyone to ask him anything if they saw him passing by. No wonder the crew is so happy.

A couple of things from the questions asked of him that I learned. Not only does the Staff Captain hold his Master's License, so do all of the 1st officers on the Rotterdam as well as # of 2nd officers so the Rotterdam has lots of licensed seamen.

Asked about the future of the smaller ships, the Captain said he hoped they would be around for a long time. He felt there would be a future for the smaller ships with special itineraries. Ships the size of the Koningsdam are probably the future builds as larger ships are more economical to run. And, while the smaller ships MAY disapeaar

Many of the Cieif Engineers also hold their Master's license.

As we walked through the old town, Ingrid pointed out a wonderful chocolatier. They are famous. Their Easter treats were unbelievable.

OMG! I may be in a diabetic coma just looking at those pictures! I want to eat my way from one end of that shop to the other.

Those pictures have made my day divine.
