Time to take a Stand on No Adult Ony Pools

Recommended Posts

I cannot even believe this is an "issue" (which it really isn't. "All over social media"? I think not)

Only an "issue" on CruiseWhining, er, Cruise Critic.

To not book a cruise because of this?

You people must be loads of laughs at parties.

YMMV.

I find that cruising is a give and take. On Royal, you get the serenity area with a pool and two hot tubs, but you now have to pay $7.95 for most room service deliveries. That change bothers me not because I am a big room service fan, but it perfectly illustrates that RC is not happy to nickel and dime anymore - now they want $$.

As to Carnival, not more adult pools is a bit of a bummer, as that is one less space for adults to actually be able to socialize.

My solution may be to cruise when the kids are in school and do land vacations in the summer.

I think it's interesting that people who come on to a site set up for comment and discussion about the cruise industry are criticized and belittled by others who don't share the same opinion or don't see a problem with the issue at hand. We all cruise for different reasons.

Fine, taking away adult only pools isn't a problem to some, it is to others.

I'll bet if they took away the casino or limited how much food you could pile on your plates some of the same detractors would be on here wailing.

No reason NOT to have an "adult only" pool. Some of us fussy folks don't like being "splashed" ....we just want to cool off, without getting hair and face wet. Plenty of space for the kiddos...but leave one area for the old fogies!

According to the poll that is taking place this is an issue for a super-majority of members on the board, so many do have a problem with. That doesn't meant that I have to have a problem with it.

I've always liked being able to go to an adult pool. I am planning to do a family cruise with all my adult kids. One of the ship comparisons I brought up was that Breeze is a wonderful ship, but there is no adult pool. Freedom, on the other hand, has an adult aft pool (well so far it has). I personally prefer not to have tiny people squealing & running around me while I'm trying to relax. We haven't booked yet & our selection may end up being more about schedules than the specific ship. While I love the Serenity area, I wish they all had a pool. It's nice to be able to cool off even if it's nothing more than dangling your legs in the water.

As for those recommending Sandals, they have nice resorts & are appealing for those wanting to have scuba included. Their staff is fantastic as well. However, I don't think I've spent more on a cruise than I would at Sandals. For non-divers, there are plenty of all inclusives that are much less than Sandals.

My reason for cruising more than land vacations is I enjoy the variety of cruising. Also, having bad weather in a port doesn't mean you'll have bad weather all week. I also find that the travel to island resorts is kind of a pain. That being said, I am doing an all inclusive before we do our family cruise. I'll just pray for good weather.

I am constantly amazed at what seems to be a big deal or no deal to the general cruise population. For me personally this whole thing is an amazing amount of drama over a nothing issue. The pools are not worth getting in, they are filled with cold seawater and they are tiny.

This...

So I guess I am constantly amazed at people who feel that other people's opinions don't matter. There are way more areas for the whole family than just adults. And again....way to over simplify it by saying it's about the water ... There is a huge difference in adult areas and kid area's are you serious?

I'll never understand the hype of swimming in an 8ft by 15 foot disgusting pool anyway. I've been on multiple cruises and the wife and I have never set a toe in the pool or hottub. I wouldn't get in my neighbors bath tub after they use it and sure ain't getting in a pool with 2000 strangers have access too. We also never get into a Jacuzzi at a resort. I can only imagine what filth and body fluid are in those pipes. Our friends swear they seen a couple having sex in one last year on vacation.

Absolutely! Late one afternoon on a sea day we went down to the aft pool bar and the pool was absolutely rancid. The crew finally closed the pool when I pointed out how utterly disgusting it was.

Sometimes the customer needs to be the person in charge or it never gets done.

I can show you at least fifty tables on lido that never were cleaned ,only until I started taking pictures. As a matter of fact I had to clean our table so we would have a place to sit.

And this was last month.

Pools are neglected just as much.

And we still have Serenity (as I understand it anyway).

This conversation will go the same way that the no smoking on balcony conversation went years ago, smokers up in arms and threatening to leave CCL etc. But here we are years later, no mad exodus from CCL on behalf of smokers after weeks/months of talking about it and CCL is still in business and thriving.

There is a solution out there if this subject is important to you (a place for adults only at some point during your cruise), serenity deck on most CCL ships (pick a ship with at least hot tubs in serenity) and whatever they have to offer, the bars, the adult comedy club, get a balcony or suite for the private balcony (thank god for balcony cabins), the clubs at night, or the opportunity to try another cruise line or a land (AI) vacation with ALL the amenities that are important to you.

Just like smoking on the balcony, if the adult only pool is a vital piece of your vacation and one of the top reasons you cruise, then obviously it will make you re-evaluate cruising as a whole.

I agree that the adults deserve a quiet area for relaxing. This is our first cruise and I hope little kids don't make it impossible to go swimming

trust me--the kids WILL make it impossible. I have been on many carnival cruises and the kids not only take over the pools, but the hot tubs too. Don't plan on any quality swim/pool time. If you want to go to a nice big pool, best thing to do is book an all inclusive resort excursion with a nice pool at one of your stops.

It's most troubling on the ships without serenity. I don't mind kids, truly. I have 2 of my own. In fact I appreciate that carnival is a family friendly brand. However, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for one outdoor area to be kid-free.

You have an outdoor area. It's called Serenity. Most of the time kids only want to be at the back pool when it is raining or just terrible weather. Their parents have to pay full fare as well and they deserve to have the same spaces as adults. Just remember the fact that you were kids once.

The only way to take a stand is to cancel your cruise and switch to a cruise line / resort that offers features and amenities that have a direct impact on your enjoyment. And to let the company know why they lost your business. I think it is fine to express your displeasure, but they only understand one language; money.

We are childless by choice and this doesn't faze me in the least. I rarely get in the pools and am fine with serenity as an adults only retreat. And honestly, for us, if we really want to retreat, we head to our balcony (or sail at times when school is not out and there aren't many kids on board). Everything is a choice, and if you choose to sail at peak kid times like summer, winter holidays, or spring break, you have to expect the kids to win.

And when we want no kids, we book the adults only resorts. There's a lot more of them than Sandals and plenty cost less than a cruise in the end.

can i get a few names? may check one out next year
