Just for fun, what is the single worst thing you have seen a carnival cruiser doing?

Recommended Posts

The last cruise I was on I would have a few cocktails before dinner at the Atrium Bar. It was located very close to the GS Desk. For the most part, every night GS had under 3 people there. The last evening of the cruise, GS is packed. From the bar seat, I could hear the conversations. I heard at least 6 people in the 45 mins I was sitting there raising hell about their bill. It all had to do with the gratuities. I was shocked at the amount of people who have the tips removed because they thought it was to much. This one lady had bags of stuff from the Fun Shops, with every ship trinket you could imagine around her neck and dangling from her wrists and was indignant that she was NOT going to pay these tip charges. She was "going to take care of the staff herself" (yeah, sure she was). These workers bust their butts for the passengers and it is unbelievable how self centered and cheap some of these passengers are

On Imagination last month my gf saw someone stealing a stack of photos. She just slipped in her purse and walked right into the casino. My gf tried to notify the workers, but she was GONE. We spent like 60-70 bucks on pictures so we were in shock to see someone just take them.

That reminds me I saw that on my Pride trip. Just as we were walking out the door for disembarkation she grabbed them and jumped back in line. Kind of pissed me off as I paid an arm and a leg for our photos.

Don't be.

I would never want anything bad enough i had to steal. And they are just low life people.

You were not taken advantage of.You paid the price that was advertised for a service and they stole something. They probably steal all the time. They will eventually get caught.

At least it's better now where people have to actually bother to get them removed. Back when they gave out the tips in envelopes people would just not show up to dinner on the last night to stiff the waiters.

ha ha sometimes people can't control their spending and then it's time to face the credit card bill. The blame has to go somewhere. But they were aware of the tips before they made purchases such as drinks and graits. They shouldn't be surprised at all lol

Or angry:rolleyes:

I wish they would stop calling them a "Gratuity" which implies optional, and call it a "Service Charge". I know it wouldn't completely solve the problem, but a least we could get beyond the "It's a tip and completely up to my discretion" argument, when it is really a large portion of what certain positions are paid.

They call them a tip for tax purposes. If they were service charges they would be subject to corporate income tax.

I don't think that is correct so long as the entirety of the charge is redistributed to crew. It's an income tax, not a tax on gross revenue (assuming US laws which would likely apply given CCL is headquartered in Miami.)

Steve is correct. The payment to the employee would be recorded as an adjustment to revenue, not an expense and therefore the cruise line would have no tax burden on the revenue. Of course, they are not US companies and I do not think they pay US Corporate Tax to begin with. While they are headquartered in Miami the ships are registered in other companies, and I believe the company is incorporated somewhere else as well.

The tax question aside. My point was just the term they use. Gratuity is intrinsically in the eye of the beholder. This is really a "Housekeeping Charge" or "Dining Service Charge" something that makes it clear to people that it is part of the expense of cruising, not something extra you give in appreciation of outstanding service.

This is from an article here on this site. http://www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?ID=261

"For customer-facing positions, gratuities usually come into play. "Gratuities make up most of the compensation for crew in the housekeeping and food and beverage departments," says Collins. The base wage is usually low -- sometimes as little as $2 a day -- but income from tips can represent as much as 95 percent of the take-home total."

Our last cruise on the Magic, we went to the omelet station. One lady in front, so I got in that line instead of the one next to her with 2 people. She then ordered 11 OMELETS! We waited forever. Someone said something to her, and she said her kids couldn't stand in line because they are "little." Guess they are going to be getting a LOT bigger on those 11 omelets!

Who was watching the kids while she was getting the order?

Here are a few I recently observed:

-child has a bloody nose and mom is holding his head down as he drips blood into the shower drain on the Lido deck.

-Guy hucks a loogie between his legs while sitting on the table next to us in Lido dining area and rubs it out with his foot as if that makes it okay. We got up and moved to the other side of the room after telling one of the stewards what happened.

-Numerous parents spraying sunblock directly into their children's faces and being surprised when child complains about the spray getting in their eyes. It is typically written in bold on these spray bottles to not apply spray directly to the face.

I enjoy reading these, as I never know what someone is going to post, as I seen several things that people have posted on here as well. I just try to go with the flow when seeing this on the cruise ships. Sort of reminds me of some pictures/post that have been sent to me of what people "wear" at WalMart. Really amazed me, as I've never seen people dress this bad, but I'm sure it goes on.

I shop at walmart.

Do you mean people that buy clothes at walmart. Or people who work at walmart and what they wear?

I can afford to shop anywhere but i find some good buys at Walmart. I think as long as your clothes are clean that's what counts. If you mean dressing up in a social cocktail dress i have seen many styles that i hate and would never wear bought at many retail stores and were not purchased at Walmart.

Somehow Walmart gets a bad rap.

I am very style conscious and i can tell you that White Stag use to be a very prominent high end style clothing line which walmart now sells.

Also in Target the line they sell Merona Wear use to be a cruise wear exclusive where you can buy several matching pieces with the same dye lot and match many outfits. This use to be very high end and expensive.

I sold this at loehmann's back in the 80's.This is now a exclusive Target Brand. Those who are in the merchandise business will concur.

I don't think that people who shop at Saks will shop for clothes at walmart. And i usually don't but bargains like hanes underwear and fruit of the Loom is a no brainer at Walmart 12.00 verses 36.00. SAME underwear. I am not to proud to pick up bargains. My Husband insists on buying sneakers at Walmart. But sometimes i get to his wardrobe first and buy him brand names like NIKE and New Balance and Boat shoes that are brand name but he loves his Walmart sneakers .LOL

However you cannot find a nice cocktail dress at Walmart . LOL ,TJ MAXX AND ROSS are my favorite BELK and BURLINGTON and Macy's and Dillards . These are my go to for bargains. But I have enough confidence in my economic social status that prevents me from being pretentious.

Oh and i would just like to add that i know it wasn't you were putting down Walmart dressing . But i do not know who it was and i wanted to respond to the post.

Hate pretentious people and want to be's.

People who have money have no need to impress others in fact would rather sink into the background of normality .

I think beshears was possibly referring to the Peopleofwalmart website, not to people who buy clothes at Walmart

I too shop shamelessly at Walmart- for certain things! So when people call Carnival 'the Walmart of the Seas', I happily tell them to stick to Celebrity and their expensive boutiques and leave Carnival to me and others who appreciate the product provided for the value!

On thread topic here, I once saw a mom on the Lido deck strip down her son out of his wet bathing suit and put underwear and shorts on him. Common occurrence with toddlers, you say? He had to be 12 or 13 years old! And was clearly mortified by it but his mother wouldn't listen to his arguments! right after I heard his friends razzing him about it. I couldn't help thinking 'there's a kid who's gonna have serious 'mommy' issues all his life'!

I think you mistook the subject. I agree with you 100%, but I believe they were talking about the old emails that showed "WalMart" shoppers in a different light. I just googled it and here is an example of one of the tamest ones I could find to post here, most are very raunchy.

No, I'm not trying to give WalMart a bad rap. What I was referring to was "pictures" of people shopping there, and half or MORE of their bodies hanging out of their clothes. Looked so gross. :o In other words, looked like their clothes were too small for them.
