Be generous with time, if leaving Venice

We originally planned to take the alilaguna boat but are now planning to book a shared water taxi. Our hotel is right by the S. Zaccaria stop with no bridges to cross with luggage. We thought about staying at a hotel near P. Roma to make transportation easier, but decided we wanted to be more in the middle of Venice so we switched to a hotel near San Marco. We plan to take the alilaguna from our hotel to the ship the next day.

When we have got off the ship in Venice there has always been plenty of road taxis which take about 25 minutes to get to Marco Polo airport.

Piazza Roma is right next to the people carrier to the ships and car taxis can drop you off here.

There are a number of taxis around this square or you can walk over a bridge to access several more hotels.

I have seen many messages about the flight schedule. Just comment that it is established by aviation companies that one must be at the airport 3 hours earlier on international flights and 2 hours earlier on local flights.

What time have you booked it ?

April shouldn't be too bad, I flew out in March and it was fine but I only had hand luggage.

Sorry, I left out the time.. We are staying at the Becher hotel. They have their own dock.. I scheduled a 7:00am pick up.

Ebtrip You might want to go a little earlier say 6:30, just in case a lot of cruise passengers coming or going. That way you would have nearly the full three hours ahead. Venice at sunrise in a water taxi is worth every penny we paid, simply magical! The water taxis are much quicker than the alilaguna boats as they don't make all the stops but go directly to the airport.

Just to clarify the airport dock is a short flat 5 minute walk to the airport. This is NOT the dock the cruise ships use. That is near Piazzale Roma and you access that by water taxi, water buses, some alilaguna as well as the people mover.

The alilaguna are larger boats that operate by a schedule and you can buy tickets before boarding at the airport dockside. Alilaguna is different than private water taxis and different again from the water buses.

Pompeii For your transfer to the ship a shared water taxi is the easiest with luggage if there are others from your roll call. Some water buses also stop by the dock. The piazzale Roma people mover route is a pain with luggage and I would avoid it. Just ask at your hotel if there is a direct water bus or alilaguna route to the dock.

Hi,

Thanks for your info.. we have a PRIVATE WATER TAXI to the airport..It will take us right to the airport directly from the private dock of our hotel, and we have already pre booked. Does it mean we still have to walk a long distance to the airport?

Thanks for the advice, but I have already determined all of this. I plan to take a shared water taxi from the airport, and know that I can take the alilaguna from our hotel to the port. We chose our hotel partly because we can get there with no bridges to cross, partly because we can easily and inexpensively get to the port from there, and mostly because it is in Venice. ;)

That is amazing (. Over $200 per person for a little help? The thing is they might save you a few minutes through Passport control and then you reach the luggage area where you will have to wait (along with those who have not spent over $200 per person) for your bags.

Are you sure? looks like they missed out 2 important words that the airport has on its website

"For international departures you should report to the check-in area at least 2 hours before take-off."

Even when we have checked in online this airport is one of the slowest check ins we have experienced.

American only requires you check in 1 hour before departures. I have already paid to use the VIP serivce I hate waiting in lines if I don't have to. https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/arrival-times.jsp

Arrival at the airportIt takes time to complete check-in, check baggage and clear security, so we recommend arriving at the airport as early as possible.

Since some delays may be beyond our control, we recommend an arrival time at the airport of one hour and thirty minutes prior to departure when traveling within the United States. When traveling outside of the United States, we recommend two hours prior to departure.

So is that 1 hour? or 2 hours?

How long does your VIP service say you have to get to the airport before take off?

I think you can get a similar (but unescorted) service at the airport for 40Euro pp

Be in line to check in 2 hours before, 1 hour before you must be checked in. This is how I read it.

With VIP service, they check you in so 1 hour before.

No this is not close to the same. This is a one day pass for the private lounge only.

I am spending over $10,000.00 on this trip so a little extra is not an issue. We are going to be traveling over 20 hours the last thing I want is two and a half extra hours at the airport. At the end of a beautiful vacation, no way do I want to leave my hotel at 7 in the morning and wait for a 12:00 flight then travel 20 hours home. I get very stressed out at airports and this is a less stressful way to travel. So for me, it is a small price to pay.

After you use this service I can bet you will think its waste of money. Are you from Australia ?
