It's best to stay on the ship.

I hope this was a joke? In Chicago there were 100 people shot over 4th of July weekend; in Fort Lauderdale there was the airport shooting, and there have been all the recent attacks world wide using vehicles as weapons. If you are so worried about safety that you wouldn't get off in port not sure how you can justify leaving your house every day. Mexico is a really large country and the tourist areas are the least dangerous. I wouldn't hesitate to visit Mexico.

it's a travel warning, not a ban, but I was amazed that Cozumel was figured so prominently this morning when I watched the news. tainted booze? we have been reading for years how not to be drinking heavily and to watch our for certain bars there. but it wouldn't keep me on the ship. it would just keep me more vigil about what I do, and where I go.

oh, the news was on when I typed this, organized crime in cancun and Cozumel. turf wars, but tourist should be careful.

Violence in Chicago and isolated terror incidents in other countries are nothing like what's going on in Mexico. I hope your post was a joke.

People love to create false equivalents to support their beliefs. People getting shot somewhere does not make mexico any safer. Mexico is dangerous, period. Even the lady at my favorite Mexican hole in the wall restaurant won't go back to visit relatives.

I personally would not let this deter me from getting off the ship. I got the same warning for Bahamas a little while back. It's all over the place. A friend of mine from Europe got a similar message about the US. That being said, I can understand why people would stay on the ship. If you aren't going to be comfortable than you will not enjoy yourself. The ship will be empty, I say enjoy the ship if that's what you wish to do and don't let other people judge you for it. It's your vacation.

this is just ridiculous, Cozumel is one of our favorite ports. We never do all inclusives as feel we could never eat or drink enough and don't want to try. We are divers and Cozumel has some of the best diving in the world. We never book with Carnival, so for us, it's taxi to a dive shop, after the dive grab a beer and a taco and head back to the ship, not very dangerous

It's not. You can be shot or robbed anywhere in the world. I use reasonable caution but won't let it affect my life.

It was funny, we took a trip last year that went to Amsterdam and Tanzania. People kept asking me if we were afraid to travel to Africa. Realistically, Amsterdam was the more dangerous part of the trip. And no, we weren't afraid and had a wonderful time. I wouldn't hesitate to visit Mexico again either.

I been traveling to Mexico for quite a long time , from Mexico City , Acapulco , Rosarita , Cabo, Coz .. been there a bunch.

With the exception of perhaps a small area in chi town . The situation there in my opinion can't be compared to crime ridden area in most countries. There is a war going on.

Acapulco at one time was The place to be , Great resorts .. today a wasteland to Narco fighting abandoned by the Mexican government, a complete retreat .

It started just like the tourist areas are today , heavy presence of federal troops but slowly they lost and pulled out.

This year we seen the warfare spread to areas it has not general been , Cabo, Cancun to name a few .. That is reason for me this advisory is so sad .

For me it's not the end of going to Mexico but I did cancel a trip to riu /Cabo as we were going with a bunch of people and some were in their 20's and likely would go hit some of the clubs.. just felt for us there were other places that fit...

Any tourist, any where, should be aware of surroundings, do not go unescorted into areas you do not belong (which means you probably need to do some research before making those decisions) and do not act like a clueless tourist (not paying attention to signs or where one is or flashing money/expensive jewelry).

A few years ago a family was at one of the very popular beaches in St. Thomas (don't remember which one), a cruise (Carnival?) port day and something happened at beach or on way (maybe a drug deal gone wrong, dont remember details) but the 14 year old daughter was shot and killed. St. Thomas, a US territory and very expensive and popular destination.

Being at the wrong place at the wrong time can happen anywhere, at any time, even HERE. If you are not well traveled or you are so uncomfortable being outside the USA, you can always opt to stay on the ship. That is not a bad thing either especially if you are anxious about it.
