New Dress Code Designations?

I have sons in their twenties and asked one if them what he understood by smart attire and informal wear.

For smart attire he said a shirt and suit pants. For informal he said t-shirt and jeans. Gala evening drew a blank look.

By default he is jeans and t-shirt and rarely wears a suit so I took it as a hopeful sign.

Providing Cunard enforce the current definitions changing the language may help avoid misunderstandings as to what's acceptable, certainly where informal wear is required.

oops he also added the word jacket to his definition of smart attire... not sure what he had in mind though.

They just put up the definitions on the website.

Do you have a link please ? I'm not seeing anything on the UK website.

From the "What to Wear" page within the "Dining" section of the US voyage personaliser:

What to Wear

The Voyage itinerary section includes guidance for evening dress attire. The below descriptions will give you an idea of what to pack for your voyage.

During the day, feel free to relax and dress as you please in all areas of the ship.

From 6pm on 'Informal' nights, we ask that you wear smart attire in most of our bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. On our much-anticipated Gala evenings, dress attire is Formal. We invite you to dress to impress and celebrate with us. There are two or three of these Gala evenings for every seven days of your voyage.

Informal/Smart Attire: Gentlemen, every night we request you wear smart trousers with a shirt and jacket; tie is optional. Ladies, blouses and skirts or stylish trousers and dresses are welcome.

Formal/Gala Evenings: It’s Showtime. Dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit for the men with a regular tie or bow tie. Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates for the ladies please.

Of course, if you prefer to spend your evenings in more relaxed attire, feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Kings Court or Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, Casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden/Winter Lounge and G32 or Yacht Club. Non-ripped jeans are appropriate, but please refrain from wearing shorts, sports attire, swim wear or sleeveless t-shirts outside of the gym, spa and deck spaces.

Please ensure you pack appropriate clothing for your voyage. During the winter months in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Islands we suggest that you pack a waterproof jacket and clothing that can be layered, so you can be comfortable in all conditions from sunny afternoons to chilly nights.

What I don’t understand is, if they have simply changed the terminology, why is one of our evenings Informal, jacket required, while the others are Smart Attire? Plus the usual two Gala (formal) nights.
It looks as if you are travelling during the changeover period.

Thank you, that page came up as soon as I logged in so hopefully more obvious than it was previously.

There are definitely changes, especially to day time. E.g., no ban on swim suits.

They seem to also be relaxing what can be worn in some areas of the ship at night, eg clean denim and T shirts (at least that is how I read it) in Kings Court, Golden Lion, etc.

At least for my cruise in July I am personally OK with the changes not going too far yet.

FYI, for good or bad the dress requirements in the US have been growing more relaxed over the last decades. There have been articles in respected publications describing this phenomena.

For example even in large Certified Public Accounting firms first there was the requirement that men wear suits with white shirts and ties, then there was casual Fridays (if not meeting clients), then casual during the week.

This is a trend across the US. I do not know Carnival PLCs take on this or what they think they need to do from a marketing perspective. Just that it is occurring more and more in the US with many restaurants lowering their dress requirements in order to keep younger generations used to the lowering of dress requirements.

Personally, I think they have gone too far in some of the US restaurants. I personally think Tshirts at dinner is too far in a sit down restaurant, however that is where US taste is going. FYI, some designer T shirts cost more than button down shirts.

I love the QM2, but have taken her primarily as a method to get to Europe from US without a long plane flight. We have enjoyed getting dressed up for dinner. However, if the standards are relaxed a bit, I really don’t care.

Know this may not be popular among some of the hard core here.

DH will still wear a sport coat and tie to dinner. I will dress in smart separates. If you wish to dress up more or less than us, that is fine!

I just noticed the new "What to Wear" page includes the Casino in the venues where one can dress casually during the evenings. I believe that's a change. At least I don't recall the Casino being included in the list of casual venues before.

Maybe your cruise is at the beginning of the crossover date in June?

The Casino and Golden Lion have been added to the list.

The "best" dress code that I have ever come across was with P&O UK about 8 years ago , when we did two back to back cruises on Oriana and Arcadia to the UK and return to Australia . This code had 3 standards - Formal, informal and casual . Formal was basically Black Tie, Informal was Jacket for men and casual was no jacket. It was a good mix .

I didn't know that the Yacht Club was casual either.

So basically other than the main dining rooms and one lounge the rest of the ship is open for "smart attire" which means to the US population basically what one wears to garden or take the trash to the dump. Can't imagine placing my bets in the casino on formal nights next to the unwashed in T shirts and clean jeans. Snobby? yes but that is why I used to book Cunard.

Sorry Cunard, I will be cancelling my B-B TA for December. I would rather take a shorter time at Green Brier or the Breakers than sail on a floating McDonalds coupled with bubba's lounge.

Hardly, the theatre, Commodore Club, Midships Lounge, Chart Room, Champagne Bar, Queens Room, Sir Samuels, ie the majority of public rooms still require Formal/Gala attire. Edited by Host Hattie

Worries me because we have cruised on Cunard and Princess many times and the last time we were on Princess an American at our dinner table on formal night thought black t shirt and black trousers was formal so god knows what is idea of smart attire would be. Smart attire on most other cruise lines meand open shirt and trousers no jacket or tie required and I fear this is the way Cunard are going.

It has to be asked why did the restaurant Maitre d'Hotel not deny him access for not meeting the dress code? Certainly wont try Princess as an alternative to Cunard

Sadly it is obvious that the management of Carnival does not care or understand the culture of Cunard and therefore the only option we have is to vote with our feet.

It pains me to say it but there you have it....

I have to agree with you - sadly after over 170 days on Cunard ships and a further 140 booked in 2019 it will be a real shame to say "farewell Cunard" - I will hold off until we have completed the next four cruises and wait and see how the new Cunard dress code pans out - SORRY SILLY ME I FORGOT THAT CUNARD SAY "NOTHING IS CHANGING"!!!

Log into your Voyage Personaliser. They are shown as the first page.

Thanks - sorry but we seem to be talking on crossed wires - I thought you meant they had changed the actual definition for the two new dress codes - my VP is showing the new terms - GALA..(bla) and SMART CASUAL. Thanks anyway - much appreciated.
