Reykjavik to London 11July - 25 July 2019

Recommended Posts

@texasatty, Thanks for a great blog with fabulous pictures.

Looks like you will have a warm day in Belgium tomorrow (mid 80's F) and similar in Southampton on Thursday.

If you are travelling up to London it could reach the mid to high 90's F 🥵

Hope the ship and crew are still all in good order - we board on Thursday 😁

Any indications as to what Regent intends to do during the next dry-dock for Navigator, unexpectedly scheduled for the end of August 2020?

Thanks for an informative blog with great pictures. We are equally getting ready to join the Navigator tomorrow in Southampton, packing now and trying to keep cool after a hot, sticky thunder night. London could break temp records tomorrow !! ,the lure of a sea breeze is what's keeping us going.

We are boarding in Oslo next year, so great to hear that doing the museums on your own was easy, since we will do that before the cruise.

Any other Oslo suggestions greatly appreciated!

After a morning with the museums we just caught Uber back to the Palace area and then spent some time walking n town and seeing the sights. That afternoon we ate near the fortress and explored it before boarding the ship which was docked just near there

Well, we made it to London and have been here four days in the unbelievably luxurious Rosewood Hotel. I got frustrated with the ship internet trying to upload photos from an iPhone XS...I’m sure the files are very large. The ship internet is fine for loading a photo or two at a time to Instagram or FB but the interface with this site makes it tough to upload more than a couple here.

From Oslo it was on to Copenhagen, where we ran into some friends about to board another cruise ship to head up to Germany, St Petersburg, Finland and Sweden. After a drink in Nyhavn, we were off to explore the city. We sailed for Skagen and had a great day in that small but very interesting town. Up next was Bruges.

We we made it through the hottest day on record in Bruges after a very relaxing sea day. Following Bruges we sailed all night for our disembarkation at Southampton. We had a car waiting at 9:00 to take us to London and despite heavy traffic in the city we made it to our hotel by about 11:30 where we found our room ready. After a quick unpacking we were off to see the city and a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Globe, once again enjoying one of the hooter days on record.

This is Nyhavn in Copenhagen. There are a number of casual restaurants with sidewalk seating. From here we took a canal boat cruise and saw the city from a different perspective. Our first Regent cruise left from here about ten years ago. Then we flew in the same day, something I would never do now; consequently we had only ever seen Nyhavn in this port.

This is a new playhouse of which Copehagers are justifiably proud

after the cruise we grabbed a beer and some chips and then headed off to Tivoli Gardens

We discovered Scandinavian people love churros and tacos...but who doesn’t? Taco Tuesday is a thing from Iceland to Denmark

Obligatory photo of the Little Mermaid as we walked back to the ship. It was late in the day though so the light was perfect and there were only a couple of folks there as opposed to the hundred or so we saw in the morning.F487FE93-C879-43C5-9C8E-5E6C6A0A6A10.thumb.jpeg.f20ee3f222aec5ca3a9ac95dc4772544.jpeg

Next up was the little town of Skagen Denmark. As we walked into town I began to notice very expensive cars parked at the houses. I saw a Rolls and two Bentleys while Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs and Land Rovers were a dime a dozen. It seems Skagen is a favorite summer house spot for Danes: Think Martha’s Vineyard or Mackinac Island

For most of its existence, Skagen relied on fishing, life saving and wreck salvaging as the coast is very dangerous for ships. The villagers manned life boats and there is a very interesting little museum near the shipyard. The wall in the photo above bears the name of every man who died over the years in life saving efforts. In one event, ten men died decimating the village and leaving eight widows and twenty-five fatherless children.

There were also some examples of houses from the area and a demonstration of fish salting

The village was beautiful but became quite crowded later in the day. We shopped and then rented bikes to ride out to the area where the North Sea meets the Baltic...and the site of many of the rescue missions

Next we had a sea day and then we enjoyed a heat-record setting day in Bruges. We started with a little canal cruise then essentially went from one shaded area to another. Luckily we have already deeply explored the city on another cruise, including climbing the Bell Tower.

It’s never too hot for a waffle, though!

We have had a great four days in London and we look forward to three more before finally flying home. I hope you enjoyed the trip. See you next time and happy cruising!

@texasatty thank you so much for taking the time to share your cruise experience - I've really enjoyed sailing along with you and appreciate how long it takes to edit and upload so many photographs!   Experiencing such high temperatures in cities where we are unaccustomed to such weather must have been a challenge - although perhaps you are more used to such a climate?  Hope your last few days in London are a little more comfortable (the temperature has fallen considerably here, a couple of hours west of there) and that you have a safe and uneventful journey home!

Its funny you should say we are used to hot temps because Stacy and I discussed this. We are to a degree 😀 but if I’m honest, all we do in Texas when the thermometer is 97+ is go from one air conditioned building to another or go to the pool. If anyone suggested walking around town to sight see we would have them committed

Thank you for your excellent posts and gorgeous photos.  I really enjoyed following along.  You seemed to get the most out of all the ports visited.  I was tired just reading about all your activities!  Enjoy London.

The line "mad dogs and Englishmen" is not that far from the truth  😎

(in case you don't know the reference, it's here  😉 )
