The way it works at the bar and when ordering from someone with the medallion reader. You actually have to just about touch the reader on the bar. It will then change colors around the circle and read your medallion. The bar tender will give you a nod that it read it. Just walking past it will in no way register it at the bar.

Bunch of miss information.

I agree that is how it is NOW, but on our first cruise it was simply walk by which is how people were being charged incorrectly.  It may not have happened to you but it happened to folks on here and they had to go and have charges removed.  So it is not misinformation if it did happen...I stated that there "were" several folks who had that happen but thought it had been rectified with the new tap method but as I dont frequent the bars i could only state that now the stores and bingo require the tap which in the past they did not ...so please dont tell me i am mis communicating when i was on a cruise that did not require the tap to buy items and have recently been on one where they now require you to tap the medallion.  I have experienced both. So just because you didn't have it happen to you doesn't mean it didnt happen ever.

When did you cruise? Dec 1 2019st cruise and the Jan 11 2020 cruise were the same.

I am not sure why you are questioning what I experienced when I was there and you were not.  I did not state anything about the magnet.  We were on the Caribbean princess in August of 2018 on a b2b cruise.  The second week they started using the medallions and to buy something in the store or when we did bingo we did not need to tap it they simply rang the purchase and then had us still sign on their little ipad at bingo and at the store simply handed me my bag/receipt.  I never tapped or did anything.  i had the medallion and cruise card in my hand (because we were issued both at that time) and next thing the cashier handed me the bag with my purchases and the receipt was in the bag.  Later that night I went to make sure it was on our account and it showed it indeed did post as it seemed odd I gave her no info and yet she charged our stuff.  This thread is not just about Royal but about the medallion and I spoke of what I had experienced on the Caribbean and then again on the Royal last year in November, and what I read from others on any princess ship that has the medallion on it.

I have gone thru the last 15 pages and do not find any related answers to the questions I have.

Can anyone answer a few simple questions as following?

1) We are probably the last couple on earth that do not own a Smartphone.  I suppose one does not need a Smartphone to use the Medallion, given our upcoming cruise is Sky to St. Petersburg in April.

Princess just sent an email to remind us our cruise is a Medallion cruise but without mentioning anything else.  Frankly we dont care for the device.  The old fashioned cruise cards work just fine.  What I really hope and probably will never see, is Princess learn something from Royal / Celebrity, to make their in room TV be the console to access almost everything needed without inventing an extra device that took so long to materialize and still does not seem to work well enough as hoped for.

2) On every Princess cruise we used the cruise card to charge casino money to the room account.   Is this still possible with the Medallion device, since now there would be no cruise card?

3) If the above 2) is possible, how do we cash out at the Casino Cage at the end of the cruise if we are lucky to still have positive balance in our casino accounts?

Thank y'all who kindly provide your answers.

Hard to believe you haven't found answers to your questions.

If you don't like the Medallion go to Passenger Services and ask for a Cruise Card. That answers all of your questions. Everything will be as it has been in the past.

I am reading backward from Page 23.   It is a rather time-consuming task.

There is a poster who seems constantly rebut others' poor Medallion experiences, did mention s/he used the Medallion for everything, including slot - BUT, the key is, s/he never says exactly how it works.

I also found out the Medallion indeed was poorly designed at the beginning in that the personal info was picked up when you just walked by a chargeable venue...   I dont know if this is based on RFID technology.  If so, a metal shield would prevent such.  But what pain!

I understand Princess wants to make this as the "least resistance path" to charge - a big revenue generator or so they hope.  For the smarter folks, that little Black card work just fine, if they want to charge. lol.

Finally, you dont need to be so blunt if you dont want to answer a question.

cashing out at the casino is the same. You just go there and let them know you want to cash out. You will put your medallion on the reader. Then enter your pin number.

The only reason the Medallions have magnets inside them is so that they'll stick inside the jewelry they sell. Other than than they serve no purpose.

The magnet activates the reader.

Cashing out is just as easy. You will place your medallion on the reader. Instead of swiping a card. Then enter your pin. That is it. No iPhone needed at all to use the medallion. I was on the Sky. When you get to your cabin your door will automatically unlock. No need to insert a card. You will use the Medallion to purchase everything and anything on the ship. Same as with the card. No different to gamble, slots you will scan the medallion and enter your pin. if you want to purchase chips at the table. Same. Same if you want to purchase chips at the Casino cage. I liked it. You may not.

I was blunt because that was the answer to the question. You said you don't want a Medallion so get a Cruise Card. That would seem to be the answer to your issues. You can use the Medallion to board the ship and then never use it again.

So I get an email saying my Ocean medallion order has been shipped, scheduled to be delivered by Fed Ex on Wednesday.  The Fed Ex shipping tracker indicates they were shipped from Singapore GS, Are you flipping kidding me Princess,???  My Ocean Medallion devices were shipped from the second highest concentrated area of Coronavirus in the world??  Then I go to the United States CDC website and they say the disease can be transmitted from an object.  If the object is contaminated and you then touch your mouth, nose or eyes after touching the object.  This is incredible...........

Thanks for the explanation!

My understanding is,  Sky's cabin door does not even have card key slot.

On each Princess / HAL cruise we would set up our casino account then charge our shipboard accounts thru the slot machines.  Can you explain how this is done with the Medallions?

I assume it is like the old way that you set up your casino accounts with your DoB, then set up the 4 digits PIN.  Then charge to your shipboard account.  All handled with the Medallion.   Once you are done with it, cash out from the Slot back to your casino accounts.  Repeat the process on reverse direction next time you go play.  Each time the Medallion would be held to the reader and there are clear indication at each step, at least I hope so.

I guess I call Princess tomorrow and ask them what they are thinking....my wife is nervous already, I dont even want to share this information with her!!! We ordered the watch bands.  I guess I will open the package with rubber gloves, spray the devices with lysol rated for CVOD-19.  Come on Princess!!!

The answer(s) are not clear, and it took 10's of pages of reading to find some vague information.

If you dont care to answer the specific questions, you can stay quiet instead of being blunt.

Sky's cabin door does not even have card key slot based on the picture posted.  Unless it has another device attached to the cabin door to read the card key,  I am afraid your statement of not having to use Medallion once boarding,  does not apply to Sky which is the ship we will be on.

No,  we can not board the ship with the Medallion - because we will travel with dual passports for the particular itinerary.  I called Princess on which passport to put in the personalizer and how that would work with the Medallion.  They said to put in the passport used for disembarkation,  but to also  forget about the Madallion and check in at the pier as usual because we do not have the US PR numbers since we also hold US passports - the system would not be smart enough to allow us thru without the US PR numbers with the passports for disembarkation.

That is before I finally waded thru this thread and saw so many spent so much needless hours trying to figure out how to download the apps etc etc.   I have a iPad 6 that sure can take care of the download but I have no inclination to spend time to download this and that, then to scan passport(s) to upload,  when Princess doesn't even have the answer.

Frankly, the less junk apps get on my iPad the better.  I have deleted all the "come with" apps down to the iTunes that since it is Apple's own, I cannot get rid of it.

The only apps that can find a place on my iPad are those that I really need to use, such as Google Translate and Google Offline Map,  Maps.me,  Moovit, Chase and AMEX, plus airlines and hotels programs.  Apps that we truly need.  I am glad  I do not need to use Medallion app to enjoy a Princess cruise.

That is where they are shipped from. They do arrive fast and you can track it. They are packed real good.

Only time we ever used medallion was to open door. Anytime we ordered a drink at the bar or in MDR they asked for our room #. No one approached us ever about ordering a drink with medallion.

One of the things we liked about Norwegian was that you could order extra towels, etc through your TV as well as check your room statement as needed. You can do this here by asking at the front desk which we did on Saturday and a final copy was delivered under our door the last morning.

Hello @1gr8cruise. We appreciate your question and want to address your concern to assure you that your OceanMedallion package is safe to open.

A recent news report cites infectious disease specialists who suggest the virus is not likely to spread via packages or mail from Asia because of "poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces."

"It's not going to be transported on a box," says Dr. Michael Ison of Northwestern University, who studies viral infections among transplant patients, who have weakened immune systems.

Have you ever used Google Pay or Apple Pay, or, an NFC enabled credit card, or, even an NFC enabled Hotel Card? There are no magnets in my credit cards, my phone, or, any of the Hotel Cards.

Thank you for the response.  I wasn't concerned about the outside of the box, but more concerned about the products inside, who packaged them, what procedures were used.  This package is now in my home, everything appears to be in order.   However, while you have quoted NPR news articles, in my OP I referenced the actual CDC for the US.  Here is what I found on the official government site, this is what escalated my concern about the package I was shipped by Princess from Singapore (Asia).

Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects.

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Thanks again.

The next time you enter the DR you'll see your picture appear on their tablet screen which activates from 10-15 feet away. Certainly not activated by the internal magnet.

Not the same type of system. Not even close.

Not the same as charging to your account. It is activated totally different. Same system so they know where you are when you order from your iPhone. Systems for ordering or entering you room and not the same as wanting to purchase using the medallion. All readers to charge to your account are activated by the magnet.
