sevenseasnomad Posted November 27, 2019 #37 Share Posted November 27, 2019 There she goes. How come some ships toot and others don't? Is there a rhyme or reason for it? Just wondering. . .

Also, during sailing, the Master may have other distractions that are more important than keeping those of us watching sailaways and hoping for toots happy. Vic The Parrot Posted November 27, 2019 #39 Share Posted November 27, 2019 It's a nice evening for a sailaway! I have to admit, she still is a nice looking ship, even with that appendage on the stern.

Last thing on an officer's mind is probably blowing the horn, unless he/she is about to ram another ship. Then, what good will all the noise do except to call attention to the fact there's about to be an accident? I love hearing the toots, especially onboard, as it means we're off on a wonderful cruise. Wonder if we passengers could collectively ask for toots as ship is leaving. Never hurts to ask.

Wonder if we passengers could collectively ask for toots as ship is leaving. Never hurts to ask. Your idea is worthy. But, to whom would you ask? And on sailing day, how long would such a message take to get to the Master? Q&A sessions held with the Captain and Hotel Director on most cruises are opportunities for guests to "remind" the Captain that toots are appreciated. Surely, any chance meeting with a Captain would also offer another opportunity. When I have had these rare occasions, I have been so surprised that toots were rarely thought or mentioned. The sole exception was when I met Captain van Eerteen on the Westerdam after the plaque for the "Queen of Toots" had been presented to him by another CC HAL poster. (And, that plaque is displayed on the wall with other maiden port visit plaques for the Westerdam.)
