Manatee Swimming around Cruise Terminal in Miami

You never know what you are going to see while waiting for your ship to sail. We were fortunate enough to see this manatee swimming down the Main Channel in Miami before a cruise in October 2019.

Very cool!  We saw sea lions swimming around our ship in Vancouver before an Alaska cruse a few years ago.

Biscayne Bay, especially the south end, tends to be shallow, so the manatees enjoy the warmer water.  It's less usual for them to be in the deeper, cooler channel area

 

The south end of the Port of Palm Beach (cruises to the Bahamas, etc) has a manatee observation center. In the winter, it's not unusual to see dozens of manatees and calves near the power plant outflow channel.

Manatee Lagoon (https://www.visitmanateelagoon.com/) is one of our favorite places to visit in the winter, especially after a few 'cold days' when the manatees gather in the warm water of the FPL power plant outflow.  A couple of years ago we counted almost 50 in the lagoon and dozens more along the intracoastal sea wall.  It was incredible!

Looking for wildlife and not knowing what, if anything one will see, during a cruise is one of the things that I most enjoy.

 

One simply has to be at "the right place at the right time" for such sightings!

Without all the cruise ships and boats around, Biscayne Bay is extremely clear right now.  You'll see a lot of marine life swimming around.

We love Manatee Lagoon!  Go as often as possible in the winter.

 

We do our cardio to the beach and back every day and the ocean is stunning right now.

Nice video.  If you're ever in the Tampa area, you can go north to Crystal River, where local outfitters will take you out and you can actually get in the water and swim with them 🙂

When I worked in downtown Miami, I used to see manatees at the mouth of the Miami River and swimming past the dock in front of the Intercontinental Hotel. I'd walk over at lunchtime just to sit and watch the manatees and the dolphins out in Biscayne Bay.  Awesome!
