ArrCanAPP

Recommended Posts

I wrote a postal about this very subject yesterday. Phoned my MP this morning. Obviously I wasn't the only one upset with the rules. I agree that there need to be regulations that protect our health, but showing a vaccine passport and still being forced into quarantine was nuts. Not being savvy enough, or simply forgetting happen to everyone at some point. If you don't have or cannot access internet during travel,  border officials need to show understanding. Most people do not intentionally break rules, so try to help.  Glad to see some guidance.

My husband and I wre talking about this tonight.

I normally turn my phone on airplane mood when I go to the states because I don't want to pay the roaming fee. I realize that wont' work when I am in Orlando after my cruise.

I am planning on going across the border on Saturday, partly to test out th ArriveCan App. I also normally turn on my airplane mode but can't do that.

I guess there is a difference between arriving at the border with nothing but your passport, versus trying to use the app and it not working.

I would appreciate hearing more about your comment "can't do that" with respect to airplane mode.  We have just returned from a Bermuda cruise, roaming was off, but received all our PCR test results (7 in 14 days!) and uploaded to the ArrCanApp and received the receipt QR code.  Obviously I'm missing something, and I sure would like to know better before we are off travelling again.

Doesn't the app require data or wifi to be able to work?

Maybe I'm wrong but when I keep hearing about the app not working properly i figure it's a data or wifi issue.

Did you have access to wifi when uploading your info?

What happens if you are in a place without wifi? That was what I was getting at. At an airport you could use the airport wifi. but the issues with people driving across wouldn't have wifi at the border.

Did you have shipboard wi-fi during the cruise? You can enter and save information while in Airplane Mode, but to submit it, or to receive your receipt, you must have either cellular or wi-fi access. Without one or the other, your mobile phone simply can't communicate.

Android or iPhone?

WiFi on or off?

Data on or off? If on, roaming data on or off?

In our case, data roaming was off, and we pay the fee to block data.  Yes, we had access to wifi, on the ship and in the airports.  We are not cell phone savvy, because we live in a remote area that has no cell phone coverage (both home and cottage).  But we bought a new Samsung Galaxy, Telus network, because border personnel simply expect it.  (In Singapore, we almost weren't allowed ashore because we couldn't provide a cell phone number.  In the rest of the world, you're not in this century if you don't have a cell phone!  But in Canada...lots of areas w/o reception.  We had a flip phone that worked in the car for emergencies, and that was all we needed and all we had.)  But being smart phone neophyts, ArrCan worked for us - for our vax certificates and PCR test results..

That explains it! 😇

So why would K_e_short say s/he can't do that?  Some cruise lines may charge for wifi, and that is your discretion, but once in port (sea or air) there are lots of opportunities for free wifi.  Cafes at the 49th too.  I don't understand the "can't".

When I cross over into the U.S. by land or by airplane I turn my data off (airplane mode on) so that I am not charged $10 per 24 hours to access my data.

I go to the Awkasasne Casino alot (well before Covid) and  would turn off my data then access the wifi at the casino. Between the drive to the casino until I cross back into Canada I would have no data, no wifi, so I would assume that I would not have a working Arrive Can app to successfully enter Canada.

Do you need a working ArriveCan app at the border, or do you just need your ArriveCan receipt?

My understanding is that once you have the receipt and can show it, there's no need for the app to be active (cellular or wi-fi connection). As I pay for Rogers' roaming on the days either side of a cruise, I have no empirical evidence.

My experience is you just need the receipt. I took a screen shot of the receipt and that is all I showed anyone that asked. I think if they want more you would show the actual tests, vaccine confirmations, etc. That being said, I was never required to do any type of secondary screening so I’m not sure if there is a stage you need more.

We crossed the border back to Canada by land this past Monday and I was a bit worried since I do not have a data plan on my phone.  I printed out my ArriveCan receipt the day we left home (we were only gone overnight) and also took a screen shot to save to my phone.  I had everything ready to show at the border when we returned  but they didn't ask for it.  I've been told if you've got Nexus, when you scan your card before you reach the booth, your ArriveCan receipt and all your details shows up on their computer inside the booth.

I'm prepared for next time! 👍

You are correct, I didn’t turn on my cellular with Rogers & never had a problem.  I just took a screen shot & that was ok, once you have the final thing from Arrive Can it also showed up on Nexus.

Can I download the ARRCAN app 2 weeks (at home) before it has to be filled out? (on our ship)

or do I have to wait and download it the day I fill it out?

Yes, you can download the ArriveCan app ahead of time .. just make sure it's the most up-to-date version before you use it.  You can likely fill in your traveller's information and upload your vaccine proof as well.

Hey k_e_short - we're in the same area as I live in the same community you leave/return from to go to Akwesasne, and have been to the casino myself many times !

I can confirm, we just returned from Anthem and drove home from NJ. At the hotel before leaving on wifi I uploaded all of the docs on the ArriveCan app. It then saves everything for you, as we then shopped at WalMart in Plattsburgh, and I picked up where I last left from while on Wifi, entered the approx time I'd be crossing and finished entering the rest of the details needed. I was then was given the QR code and number needed at the border. You also receive an email with the same info, so you can either take a screenshot of the email or just open the app and show the QR code at the border with no wifi/data needed. The border agent then just takes the code and it will pull up all the info that you had previously submitted.

Hope this helps !

Oh thank you for that information.

I have one question though - the time you are crossing? How strict is that? Like I will probably come back around 10pm. Does it have to be the exact time?

On Monday when we returned from our cross border shopping trip, I was a bit worried about the actual "crossing time" too.  Instructions said  to estimate it within a few hours.  I figured approximately 5:00 p.m. but my DH was "shopped out" so we crossed around 1:30 p.m.  No problem.  😊  It was a breeze coming back and I think the Nexus card definitely helps since they have everything right there in front of them.

Forgot to say, I actually completed the ArriveCan app before we left the house early Sunday morning and had my receipt before we left Canada since I knew we'd only be gone 48 hours max.
