What happens to people who get COVID on board?

As for me, it's not about believing that "vaccinated and masks work". Masks, vaccines, booster, social distancing are all tools that LESSEN the risk of Covid, not prevent it. It's going to be a Covid risk to travel for a long time, we all have to stay informed, be aware, to all we can to prevent Covid and make a personal decision regarding travel risks.

One of the best posts I've read on the topic in a long time.

I am curious, if you are found positive, how does that go? You are sick and go to the medical center and they test you? Or are you appearing symptomatic and they are making you test?  Asking for a friend 😉

I'm curious about this too. Do you only get tested if you feel sick and choose to? How would you even know unless you voluntarily decide to get tested? What if someone felt sick but did not take a test. I was under the assumption that there is no requirement to get tested aside from the pre test required to board the ship.

I thought it was a legitimate question. 🤷‍♀️ I guess I haven’t read specifics on what happens. I’m assuming that your spouse would stay with you in a different room?  We are also booked for the end of January.

My family and I were on the Mardi Gras NYE Cruise.  My son woke up on the 28th with a "head cold".  We quarantined him in his room and got off in Cozumel to get him some cold medicine.  Later that night he still wasn't feeling better with the cold medicine so i called Medical, which was closed at this time of night and only open for emergencies.  We were told to bring him down if we wanted to check his vitals.  So we did.  He had no fever just the head cold feeling and chills.  We booked him for a covid test (which was free) the next morning. At 630 am the dr was there to test him.  She then tested my daughter as well.  My son tested positive for Covid and my daughter was asymptomatic positive.  Then my husband and i were tested.  He was asymptomatic and i was negative.  We were then moved from our beautiful deck 11 balcony room to deck 4 front of the ship in 2 inside cabins with no windows for the rest of the cruise.  Our s&s card was cut off.  We were reimbursed for all excursions and dinner reservations we had booked.  We could not use our drink package anymore and were reimbursed for the remaining of that as well.  But we did end up ordering some beer and were charged for it.  Since we were in cruise quarantine jail, we had free internet, movies and long distance calls.  We were allowed to order anything we wanted to eat and were not charged.  Guest Services and a public health officer called every day to see how we were feeling.  My sons symptoms were gone by the 31st and was feeling much better.

This whole experience was awful and dehumanizing.  When we were moved from our balcony the public health officer told us to stay 10 feet away from him and not touch the walls with our luggage or our hands.  Crew members were fogging/spraying the hallway behind us as we walked, hallway doors were closed and we went down a crew elevator where more fogging/spraying happened.  My daughter cried the whole time going to our quarantine room and most the rest of the day.

When we got off the ship on the 2nd we were given N95 masks to wear, we were taken off the crew doors again and were given copies of our test results.  I also asked for a letter from Carnival stating that we quarantined in our room for 5 days so we were able to fly home to Ontario.  The amount of other guests getting off the ship with us that were positive, whether with symptoms or asymptomatic was shocking. We were on deck 4 (down the hall from the family harbour suites) but also heard that deck 5 was a quarantine floor.

Needless to say as soon as we got home we cancelled our B2B in March.  We were also given a future cruise credit for the remainder of our NYE cruise, which worked out to about $700.00.

That was our story and we never want to go through this again.

 🙂

Thank you for that report; I have a Mardi Gras cruise end of February and I was hoping to get more details of what happens if you are quarantined on that ship.  I’m in an Ocean Suite for that cruise, so I would be extremely upset if I were to have to quarantine in an inside cabin (I never cruise in an inside cabin due to a touch of claustrophobia).  Also, could you give a ballpark figure on the “shocking” amount of guests that got off the ship with you who were positive...a dozen? two dozen? 50? 100?  Just wanting to assess my risk a little (although I hope that Omicron will have long peaked by end of February; you sadly ended up cruising right during the Omicron surge!

Also, only $700 for 4 people for a future cruise credit for 5 days—was that for 1 room or 2.

Again, thanks for sharing this information.

I mean, not alot of people, i don't know the exact amount as there were more coming after us and some before us we did not see.  My MIL, who was waiting for us to get off, said there was alot of people coming out of those doors with suitcases before we got off.  Enough to be concerned about cruising right now, that is why we cancelled March. Our credit for the remainder of the week for 2 rooms.

Thanks...still wish I could get a vague quantifier.  And very sorry that this happened to you! We all knew we are taking risks by cruising during a pandemic, but it doesn’t make thing easier when you are the one who ends up quarantined.  Things went smoothly in the Fall, none of us saw Omicron coming.

Did the $700 seem adequate for you for 2 rooms? (I don’t know if you had a great casino rate, or if this was only a partial FCC).

While we were waiting for our luggage to come off the ship, there were 3 families on land waiting.  I'm sorry I did not count the people, I just wanted off the ship and to go home.

I thought we were going to be fine on this cruise as we were following the mask and social distancing rules.  My husband and I went to Mexico at an all inclusive in November, which had the same rules, but we had our temperature checked before we sat down in every restaurant, and we came home perfectly fine.

$700.00 no not adequate for what we went through and yes we did get the casino rate our cruise was cheap.

There seems to be only disincentives for testing once onboard.  Is there no option to quarantine in your room?

Carnival should be sharing this info on what happens😶.  We shouldn’t have to be crowdsourcing it.

Cruizin for a BruizinJust wanted to say you certainly have chosen the right name for cruising in the covid times 😉 As for Carnival sharing information, I would have a better chance of winning the lottery.

November was before Omicron. It spreads much easier.

Carnival lost 20 billion dollars when the cruising industry was shut down, they do not want that to happen again.  So they will not let anybody know during a cruise that people have tested positive and are in quarantine on their ships

The company’s total debt stood at $33 billion as of the end of Q4 2021. Total market cap is $25.11 billion. Yuge numbers we're talking here. Something has to give. Giving away cruises and low passenger counts aren't helping any. This is why they MUST return to normal as soon as possible. Existence (in current form) depends on it.

Why would Carnival want pockets of covid all over the ship? There is an option for Carnival to put covid cases off of the ship without return transportation.

It's already all over the ships. Anyone who believes they are stopping covid with protocols (though well intentioned) is fooling themselves and ignoring all evidence to the contrary. Ignorance is bliss and hopium is real. Further onboard testing only increases those numbers, which is not in their best interest. Neither is abandoning passengers without return transportation. I'm sure that will make people extra excited to book cruises. 🙄

One way covid cruises would be a tough sell, even for those of us who really like cruising. "Come cruise with us, catch covid and we'll lock you in a room and then toss you off the ship at the next port". Sounds like a winning sales pitch and business plan if I ever heard one. 😆

Carnival flat out tells you to buy insurance to cover covid and in some cases makes it mandatory. You have to be a special kind of something to gamble that much money or else have too much to begin with to not listen.

It is in Carnival's best interest to continue sailing no matter what false narratives minorities try to shovel and they are doing a fine job.
