Just so I'm clear.. alcohol clarification

Recommended Posts

Hi!  So we have the Cheers package, my husband and I and my 21 year old.  I've been busy reading various threads but need some clarification (we have only cruised Carnival once, and that was at least 15 years ago) please and thank you.  When at dinner, either at a specialty restaurant or at the MDR, are we able to order bottles of wine on our Cheers package?  Or are we simply only able to order by the glass.  If this is the case, I am gathering we are able to purchase bottles outside of our beverage package?  If so, how would they count this towards our "`15 drink/per day" limit?  We much prefer drinking wine a bottle at a time..  Are we able to order bottles of wine to our room?

Another question please.  Our last Cruise was at Christmas time just before the pandemic.  Our oldest was 18 at the time, and he was able to purchase beer and wine (nothing else alcoholic) when in international waters (apparantly international waters legal age is 18).  This was with Norweigan.  I have read and read and read but can't find this claim anywhere in Carnival FAQ.  Our other son who will be travelling with us is 18, hence the questions...

Do people really bring the allowable wine onboard?  One bottle per person aged 21 and over.  I would love to do this but don't want to be frowned upon!

I am a tad embarrassed at all my alcohol questions lol.... Their is plenty more to be focused on than just alcohol lol Thank you for taking the time to respond!

1.  You cannot order a bottle of wine with your Cheers.  You can only order one drink at a time.
2.  You can order a bottle of wine and pay for it.  It does not count towards your 15 drinks per day.  You can also order wine or alcohol to your room.  Same thing. ETA - you get a 25% discount with Cheers.

3. 18 will not be served alcohol at any point on CCL.

4. Yes.  One 750ml bottle of wine per person of legal age. It's fine. Lots do it.

You can bring one bottle of wine per person over the age of 21. Many people bring wine with them.

Your 18 year old will not be allowed to drink alcohol while on the ship. In most ports the drinking age is 18 so no problems ashore.

Also if you pour your glass of wine I. Your cabin you will not be charged the corkage fee. If you take the bottle to the MDR you are supposed to be charged but I’ve heard they sometimes skip it. $25 (I think).  I know some lines charge the fee just to carry it on.

As mentions above, you can also pre-purchase wine and hard alcohol and mixers here and have it delivered to your room on your first day. They are free to drink in your room!

These purchases do not affect your Cheers purchases.

lol, don't be embarrassed. If you see a guy double fisting Long Islands on the lido, say hi!

1) You can purchase bottles of wine at 25% with Cheers.  It does not count toward your limit.  You do get a full limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per day, though, and you only need to wait 5 minutes between drinks.  IMHO, you paid for the wine by the glass already, so why not get it.

2) You can also order bottles of wine to your room, but I'm not certain you will get the 25% discount that way (I may be wrong).

3) Drink age on Carnival is 21.  Period.

4) Yes, we often bring our allowance of wine on board.  You will be charged a corkage fee if you bring the entire bottle to the MDR, making it easier and about the same cost to purchase a bottle on board, unless there is something special that you want.

I'm guessing he could drink the bottles you bring on board in your/his cabin. If you have an 18 year old guy into wine. lol

lol, yeah, that's the rough part. But hey, at least they offer it. If I weren't so lazy, and alot younger, I'd probably go this route with a couple bottles and just make drinks in my room.

I guess one would have to weigh their $60 a day drink package to buying a couple hundred dollars in bottles and DIY hassles.

I'm not young, but you've given me something to think about.  🤣

Someone mentioned DIY drinks (by buying these bottles) if you are a diabetic and you wanted to use the sugar free powered drink mixes. I thought it was a great idea.

Carnival also offers Cruising the Vineyards. There are three levels that offer different brands of wine (starting around $150 per package). I think for a 7 day you get 5 bottles for each package.  Back before shut down, each person 21 or older could purchase their own package.

If you are going to pour you wine in your room, don't forget to bring the corkscrew!

I’ve gotten them from the steward in the past. Also make sure if you bring one with you it doesn’t have a foil cutter on it. Some (not all) of the security people will confiscate it forces that. I lost one that way.

After the minor died onboard that was intoxed, they will crack down if anyone is found supplying a minor with alcohol.

In Alberta - where I’m guessing OP is from - the legal age for drinking is 18 so not a minor at home.

He is a  minor onboard and subject to being removed from the ship if found consuming on the ship.

To take care of my under 21 year old boyfriend... I purchase 2 bottles of liquor pre-cruise and some mixers( 2 bottle maximum allowed to preorder). I get him Bottomless Bubbles as well to use as mixers. The liquor is 1L bottles so 2 go a long way... a bottle of low end vodka is about $80 and premium vodka is about $120... I just buy Goose or Tito's  He makes his drinks in the cabin pouring it into a tumbler and carries ot all over the ship.  I get Free Drinks Everywhere from the casino and always slip him a few drinks to pour into his tumbler. I've had to order extra bottles during the cruise only once.

Be good to your son's and pre-order the bottles of booze. It's easy and convenient for them.
