First time on Apex, first time Retreat quest a couple of questions

This will be our second Celebrity cruise and first time in the retreat, which leads to some questions.  I'm somewhat of a picky eater and my husband is a foodie.  I'm sure he will love the menu in Luminae, but I will need to order off the other menu in there a few nights.  (At least I read on here there is paper menu I can request with more basic items like steak and chicken.)  I assume I can get mashed or baked potatoes, a ceasar salad (from the children's menu) and basic vegetables (green beans, asparagus, broccoli, etc.) if I let them know in advance.  Is this correct?  On Evening Chic nights will they offer prime rib or lobster like the MDR?  What night's would that be on a 7 night cruise?  When you stay in a suite, do you book any specialty dining or is the food and service as good or better in Lunanie?  I love steaks and Italian, would you recommend a particular restaurant for me or just stick with Luninae?  Is the menu on the app typically all that is offered?

Is the retreat sundeck usually crowded like the other pool area?  Will there be a lot of kids at the pool during a spring break cruise or will it still be an older crowd?  I don't mind being in the sun, will I need to get up early to get a lounger near the pool?  I will slather on sunscreen and hope to go home with a bit of color.

What on earth will I use a butler for?  I don't want anyone unpacking for me.  Will they bring specialty coffee or alcoholic drinks to our room?  Remove the items from our mini fridge so we can stock it with water bottles?  Maybe bring our breakfast?  If I would like a spa appointment, should I expect the butler or concierge in the lounge to make it, or is that something I would need to schedule myself?  We usually just book verandas, so this will be a completely new experience for us.

Oh, and there's the onboard credit.  I know what I can use it for, but would you use it to book excursions and specialty dining?  An updo for one of the evening chic nights?  A massage maybe, but I get them monthly at home.  My friend has used hers before to buy an expensive bag.

Anything in particular I should check out on the Apex?

So, in Luminae on Apex it is more difficult to order from Blu or the MDR the same day. Certainly, ordering a day in advance, they can accommodate anything reasonable for you. I would speak with the shore side concierge before the cruise or the Retreat Lounge concierge when you embark about food on the first night.

They do have lobster in Luminae on the second evening chic night (probably night 6 of 7). To get prime rib, which would be on night 1, the shore side concierge before or Retreat concierge at embarkation would need to facilitate that.

I would recommend you try the Fine Cut Steakhouse which is my final thought at the end of this response.

Retreat sundeck can get crowded, especially on an Edge class ship. The crowd, the number of children, and other aspects would vary from cruise to cruise. I would go on days 1 and 2 and adjust accordingly given the situation.

Short answer is yes. Anything that would assist in making your Suite experience better for you.

Either butler or concierge can make any and all appointments.

I would recommend the Fine Cut Steakhouse. Everyone has their respective preferences and opinions. If you like steak, it is the best place onboard. They also have a very nice prime rib as well. It is like a Fleming's or Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

I have never been on E Class Ship.  We always go on Equinox in Retreat.  So I can’t answer your dining questions.  We use the butler to bring us breakfast.  He does empty mini fridge and most butlers will stock it with soda, water and beer depending on your drink package.  I always ask for a pitcher of iced tea in afternoon and ice twice a day.  They also will bring afternoon snacks and coffee.  I make all my own reservations before I board so I am assured of getting times I want.  The butler will unpack for you if you want him to, shine your shoes, have clothing pressed, etc.  We had one that insisted on shining my husbands shoes every day!  They will also make any reservations you want.  We certainly don’t use them to their full potential but I am capable to do most things myself.

As of onboard credit you can use it for mostly anything except a deposit on a future cruise.  I always get a new purse, manicure/pedicure and last cruise we had so much OBC we got couples massage, a watch for my husband and photos.  Dinner at specialty restaurants, gelato, etc.  You can also get a form at Guest Relations and have some designated as tips.  Use in casino.  Any refundable OBC you have left goes back to your credit card.  They use nonrefundable OBC first.

Hope this helps!  Enjoy your cruise!

I love steak and Ruth's Chris is one of my favorites.  We just ate there last week.

Thanks!  The only refundable OBC is what our travel agent provides, right?

After looking at the menus again,  most nights I could easily eat an entree, it’s the sides that aren’t to my taste.  I booked Fine Cut Steakhouse for night 5, which didn’t have anything appealing on the app.

My experience has been Luminae (or any of the speciality restaurants) will bend over backwards to accommodate your food (dis)likes to the extent possible. Very easy to have things prepared to your tastes.

I think you will find items to eat that will meet both your tastes and dietary needs.   If you look at the Celebrity App -   Under the MDR menu they have the "Timeless" menus (available in all of the restaurant)  that include appetizers - Caesar Salad, Escargot, Shrimp Cocktail, French Onion Soup  For Main Salmon, NY Stea, and Chicken Breast.   As you suggested you can get a baked potato or mashed with any meal as well as an assortment of vegs.

Even though the Luminae menu can be intimidating -   The fish I have had is always cooked to perfection.   You can request it without the sauces and other items.    They almost always have a Sea Bass (often called by various name and some you may not recognize),   The Guinea Hen is actually a Cornish Game Hen and can be ordered plain and a veg of choice.

Being on our current cruise for 5 weeks we have decided to order out of the box and get things we have never had and were really pleased.    The egg plant Parmesan and egg plant Lasagna for example is a knock out.

To be honest the description aren't really representative of what comes out.   On my log blog I had pictures of most menus and that actual appetizer and entre.

In addition to the any time menu they have a children's menu available at all restaurants which has a 4 ounce Filet, Chicken Fingers, Spagetti etc.    We had the Filet with a Baked Potato, Sour Cream and chives last night.

We are just off Apex today and our first Retreat experience. The cabin was lovely with plenty of storage. We loved the easy boarding and the ability to go to any of the MDRs without a reservation, but we usually ate at Luminae. I have a food allergy and after the first night it was always remembered and I never had to mention it again; I found that remarkable.
Our host brought us ice everyday and made sure the fridge had plenty of the soft drinks we like. He could make reservations for us, but I had done those at home. I was quite happy to do my own unpacking and packing. He also will be at the entrance to the theater, as there are reserved seats for Retreat guests.
We enjoyed chilling in the retreat lounge and I loved the comfy lounge deck chaises. It was a British Isles cruise, so not quite warm enough to swim, although some did use the retreat pool.

You can use your OBC for excursions , specially restaurants and shops.
Chic nights can be as dressy as you want. No jacket or tie for my husband, but we saw lots. I dressed as I would for a nice night out at home- mainly black pants and a nice top. Don’t stress over it!

Enjoy it! I know I will have a hard time cruising in a “regular” cabin again.

We truly enjoy the retreat lounge on all celebrity ships.  My DH also has limited food options and we never had a problem.   Service is excellent in all ship departments.  We love the Martini bar and spend much time at it!  We find butlers vary.  We also don't ask for much, but enjoy breakfast on our balcony a few times during the cruise.  He/she can make sure you have your laundry done and returned , shoes shined if necessary, clothes pressed for chic nights and if you host company, snacks and canapés for your guests.  We like to pack ourselves.  They also seat you on chic nights in the theatre if you desire.  The suite is bigger and you will love the extra room and storage.

We cannot go back to a regular balcony cabin.

Enjoy your cruise.

I didn’t realize I could order anything off the Timeless menu in Luminae. That would cover me any nights I don’t care for something on their menu. Besides, my biggest worry was their side dishes didn’t sound appealing and without them I wouldn’t get full.  I like sauces on food, just many include mushrooms which I won’t eat.  A filet, Caesar salad and potatoes is something I enjoy. Someone else said they pulled the 4 ounce filet from the children’s menu.

We loved the martini bar on the Summit and went several times.

We’ve stayed in everything from an inside cabin (only once and never again!) to a junior suite. I’ve always been very happy as long as I had a balcony. We love so many of the activities on a ship, especially the evening shows and live music, working on our tan by the pool, relaxing on my balcony or sun deck with a good book, comedians, cocktails, the silent disco, good food, and great service!  I hope I don’t feel I could never go back to a standard balcony cabin, but am looking forward to an upgraded experience.

We found our waiter in the Luminae to be very accommodating to our likes.  Several evenings there were not many entrees that we found appealing and our waiter knew I liked seafood and my hubby liked beef.  He brought me a delightful sea bass, and my hubby a wonderful filet.  One evening the waiter brought my hubby some spicy spaghetti, because he knew he liked that type of pasta.  None of these things were on any menu, we just got to know our waiter and he got to know what we liked and disliked.  On one occasion, we just said "surprise us".  Our last cruise in May/June was only half full, so we had time to visit with the wait staff, and it was very enjoyable.

We're sailing in a Sky Suite on Beyond next month.  Also our second celebrity cruise and our first time on the retreat deck.

Here's what I've learned:

  • Plan ahead and review the Luminae menu on the app.  Try to decide what you'll want to eat the night before if you're picky.  Order special menu requests a day ahead with the Maitre D'.
  • If you're sailing somewhere warm, expect all pool decks to be crowded at peak times, including the Retreat sundeck. Get there early. Consider using some of your on board credit for a cabana.  We rented 1/2 cabana one day on Beyond.  It's not on the retreat deck, but it looks like a nice, reserved way to spend a day at sea in the Caribbean without stressing over deck chairs. Apparently Apex cabanas are in less desirable positioning that on Beyond (people walk in front of you a lot apparently) so check out pics and reviews before booking that.
  • I used my On board credit for specialty restaurant and excursion reservations.  I had to move some things around and they immediately credited my OBC when a cancelled a reservation, so yes, those are great uses for the credit and nothing to worry about.
  • Don't stress over how to use a butler.  I've had butlers at land based vacation resorts.  Use them as needed.  Think of them as your personal assistant if you need assistance.  You don't HAVE to keep them busy if you don't have any special or not so special needs.
  • I hope you're as excited for the suite experience as we are.

Remember that you can ask the chef/waiter for a special order in Luminae, like Chateaubraind, but at least 24-48 hours ahead of time.  It always amazes me how many new things I learn on each cruise.  Sometimes, I just ask for something that does not seem to be available and it appears!  I rarely use a butler either, but he came in very handy when we were in the middle of the Atlantic with an emergency at home.  I was able to make calls from my phone in cabin.

From our experience, you can ask for deviations from their menu in Luminae.  They will bend over backwards to make sure you get what you want.  I am gluten intolerant and every morning I get gluten-free muffins and gluten-free bread.  In the evening, they could make almost anything on or off the menu for me.  On one cruise, our server knew that I liked curry and asked me if I wanted chicken curry the following evening.  He also brought out other sides like curried lentils for my meal.  When they were serving lobsters, we had 3 lobsters each, with the 4 extra lobsters brought to our table after we were served our entrees.  We didn't even ask for the extra lobsters.  🙂

Sounds like you had a wonderful waiter!  I’d be thrilled with a spicy pasta or steak!  I eat seafood, it’s just not my favorite, and we eat chicken several nights a week at home.

Just keep in mind the layout of your ship.

I know on Beyond, (and probably Apex too) the Luminae kitchen is about as far away from the main kitchen storerooms on the ship as possible. I wouldn't want to be the crew member who has to run down while you're eating your vichysoisse app, 10 decks, and then from one end of the ship to the other, to get you lamb chops which aren't in the Luminae kitchen.

I will be checking the app ahead of time to see what’s on the menu for the next day. It’s good know know I can order special requests.

Since I’m paying for the retreat, I will want to spend time on that deck. I don’t mind the sun or getting there early.

We have used some onboard credit for an excursion and a specialty restaurant as well. Not sure what we will do with all the rest.

I really don’t see us utilizing our butler much. Maybe for breakfast and specialty coffee and clearing out our mini fridge and filling it with water bottles. We don’t drink soda.

I am very excited to experience the retreat. Hopefully it’s worth the crazy spring break prices!
