How "safe" is the ship?

This thread has strayed a long way from the original question.  Many of the remarks are not particularly helpful to the original poster and may make them unnecessarily apprehensive about their cruise.  In many cruises with Celebrity and other lines we have never had to call on security.  I know it is a possibility, but definitely not a common occurrence,

Since you want to stay “on topic”, I don’t have as much experience as the others but I never felt unsafe on a Celebrity ship.  I also believe strongly that security would respond immediately to an incident *should* one occur.

I’ve been on no cruise ships where I thought security would NOT respond.

But again, if there is no signal to go to muster stations, there is no reason TO go to muster stations.

You obviously never watched The Titanic!

But seriously, after hearing about the experience in the Concordia, I think I would always err on the side of caution if my gut told me something was not right, rather than and wait for an alarm.  Better safe than sorry.

Perhaps another layer of security for the more anxious amongst us are those cruise lines offering a 'ship within a ship'.A  more limited number of suites where ones cabin and most amenities like dedicated restaurant, lounge with entertainment, drinks , food, separate pool and sun deck with private access to spa are partitioned or separated from the general cruising population waited on by a greater number of staff to guest ratio, with escorts to outside venues.

I am prepared to do a double eye poke a la the Three Stooges at the drop of a hat on any miscreant. Full stop!

Anyone goes rogue on the ship toward me or anyone when I'm there, count on it. Might even do a whoop whoop whoop sound a la Curly, to boot. So you really know it's me. 🕺

Have you watched Indonesian martial arts movies???  😳😳😳

No,  but I have watched Youtube videos of cruise ship brawls.  The security did not do a very good job in most, if not all cases,  and in some they never showed up.

Most of these are on Carnival.  Go figure...

Doubt anywhere is 100% safe. Using common sense regarding valuables (each person has a different definition) such as not leaving them on one's pool side lounger as one leaves for an extended period of time, etc.  But that said, 14 years of cruising on Celebrity and I've encountered zero "safety" issues.  Heck, DH lost a cufflink on each of our last 2 cruises and each time, it showed up in Guest Services "Lost and found" box.

I agree.  We have never had anything even remotely threatening or felt unsafe on any Celebrity ship.  Same can be said for any other cruise line we have been on.   We have never witnessed security being called either.

Leaving things out in your cabin is not a problem.  Obviously put passports and cash in the safe but since every entry into a cabin is logged electronically not hard to figure out who if something goes missing.

Leaving a $1000 phone on a towel by the pool?  Can you say stupid?  Similar to leaving your phone in a shopping cart at the grocery store and leaving the store.

One would think so, but add up disembarkation day, attendant on last day of contract, going home, expensive sunglasses setting out on shelf, having breakfast, then coming back to get carry ons and clear room by 8am, discover sunglasses gone.  When attendant is confronted sunglasses are magically found in trash down the hall, claimed must have got knocked off the shelf into trash while cleaning. Got them back, didn’t press the issue. So it can happen. Just wondering if maybe the attendant was not coming back.  Who knows, but those that think they won’t take anything are just being naïve, like I was, until it happened to me.

There was a thread on another cruise line site where a credit card and jewelry, left outside of the safe was taken. Only the cabin steward and another worker (plumber?) had access.  I can sort of guess who might have taken it.

We leave our tablet and phone on the charger, but lock up everything else.

I realize opinions will be subjective here, but your good/bad experiences are appreciated.

How safe is your stuff on a full ship? One of us is probably a little too carefree on vacation, and the other one probably a little too paranoid. Would you lock your phone in the safe rather than leave it plugged in when you leave the cabin? If you left a purse/wallet on a pool chair and went swimming, would you feel the need to keep an eye on it the whole time? Have you ever been pick pocketed on a ship?

If another passenger was threatening to you in some way, do you believe the ship security would respond helpfully to a request for assistance? Any safety tips you recommend?

The ships are very safe. I leave stuff plugged in no problem. I do lock passports, medicines and jewelry in the safe...but there are cameras everywhere and they can track down anyone who was in your cabin. Staff stealing would have big problems.

Honestly, I leave my phone on the pool lounger (under a towel or my shirt) when I get in the pool and don't worry about it. Most folks on X are pretty honest and calm--in 16 cruises we've never had (or seen, or heard of) a problem.

I used to put my jewelry in the safe every night.  Now I get lazy and just put it in a drawer.  Our last 2 cruises there was a jewelry box on the vanity that I used.  I've left small bills, tablets, phone our with no issues.  Cash, wallet and passports go in the safe and stay there until we disembark.

We were on one Celebrity ship years ago when a verbal altercation broke out in the theater.  Security was there as soon as the voices were raised and escorted everyone involved out of the theater.

On another cruise an older man fell down the steps. Crew, officers and security were there before he could even attempt to get up.

I don't think the Indonesian Police or Military teach a lot of Customer service but I get your point..

You have to have well rounded Experienced person to run your ship's security...When your ship is going in and out of "lets say" US ports who do you think Customs and the Local Police will want to cooperate with more, some guy from India as a example? or a Former Chief of Police or US Marine from the states, possibly some guy who did a couple years in the Canada or British Navy then 20 Years on with Metro Police of London?.......In 2018 I was chatting with one of the head Pursers on a Carnival ship and we got to talking about Security, I explained to her that I had flirted with the idea of going thru the hiring process back in the Mid 1990's as Chief of Security on one of their ship's. She asked about my experience and when I told her, She flat out told me that "They" couldn't afford me..That told me alot!!.

Sorry Forgot to answer you second question...The answer would be Yes!!

ArmyCop42, Looks like we have the same number in our name, Well we know where that comes from don't we😀I read your post and some of the others...I agree with some of what you said, However i would not have mentioned a nationality because it gives a lot of CC posters a way to attack you especially if you have a center or right of center thought process...

You failed to mention one thing that the cruise lines should do, and that is require Passports!! that would cut down on a lot of these fights for these "Family" groups on shorting sailings...Since your new,

Let me give you some advice, Don"t bother with posting a lot especially about security or politics...Your never win the  fight...Where in MO are you from?

I didn’t realize that a certain political leaning was required to post here.

Besides locking my wallet with passport, credit cards, and cash in the safe, I don't really worry about my phone, ipad, or camera being out charging in the cabin.

I've sometimes wondered if I should be more careful, when walking down the hallway where multiple room doors are propped open for cleaning. It would be pretty easy for someone to pop in for just a second to grab what's out in the open on the desk.

I don't understand the logic with people saying, "I've always felt safe on Celebrity, so I just hide my phone, etc. under my towel at the pool."  Just because you have been fortunate, doesn't mean it won't happen. There are many challenges to travel, and we want to be as wise and as proactive as possible.

I agree…However phones don’t do well when exposed to prolonged direct sunlight; learned this first hand
