Roll Calls Out of Favor

So why do two? Why not just pick one and dedicate your time there?

 

As noted before, a time will come when NCL will simply stop all M&Gs because of the increasing number of different sites. Only then will folks start to realize they they are the cause of this due to their multi-site participation.

I usually join both, to get and give as much info as I can and get into the cruising spirit. It didn't exist in either place so I started them. As long as NCL thinks M&Gs are good for NCL they will continue to have them.

I think folks are crazy putting out real names with exact travel dates for the entire world to see. I wouldn’t dream of putting something on FB telling folks I was out of town and for how long…

Just out of curiosity, why not? I genuinely want to know why people are afraid of saying they're on vacation. (Especially since, if you post a photo of yourself overseas, it'll be fairly obvious, anyway.)

I arranged a M&G on our last cruise and was not happy that the person who tended to be difficult and a  complainer during the cruise was also so at the meeting. I cringed with the rudeness. If you have a complaint, ask to speak privately to the staff.

The amount of good info on Cruise Critic boards is far superior than any other site.

I'm sorry, but have you seen some of the Cruise Critic roll call Excel sheets? Well Google Sheets...name, email, hometown. Holy heck. I'd never sign up for a roll call with those people.

It depends what you mean by universally accessible. It's true that just about anyone with an internet connection can go to FB, but it doesn't follow that they can see everything about you. I routinely post things on there that are visible only to people I'm friends with. Personally, I don't have a problem posting when I'm on vacation (though I'm normally too busy having a good time to bother), because I live in a very safe community, my neighbors always know where we are and we have a house sitter. And a video door bell. So I don't have the same level of worry as some do.

FWIW, everyone here doesn't really need to keep saying thing like "that other site"...you can say Facebook here (see...I just did). That is OK. The rule is that you are not allowed to promote or provide links to Facebook groups on this site...You can't say "Come join my group on Facebook. You can search for GROUPTITLE or just use my link"...that would not be allowed, but you can say the word Facebook.

 

This is Cruise Critic's actual policy on Facebook Groups:

Cruise Critic loves Facebook. in fact, we maintain FB pages for all of our sites (Cruise Critic, CruiseCritic.co.uk, our Australia site, etc.). You understand that doing so allows our members to know your "real life" name.

ROLL CALLS created on FB are not anonymous. Most of them are open to the public. Even if they are private groups, once you are accepted into the group everyone will know your real name. In doing so you have pretty much told all those people -- strangers -- when you will be away on vacation. The fact of the matter is most people do not understand how much personal information they are sharing.

On Cruise Critic roll calls, everyone is anonymous. You have the ability to remain as anonymous as you'd like throughout the entire Roll Call timeframe and throughout your entire cruise if you so desire. You can be JoeCruise101 until the day you disembark. The choice is yours, you share as much or as little as YOU choose to; everyone starts out on a level playing field on Cruise Critic. Anonymous user names only.

Also, FB Roll Calls have already proven to divide Roll Calls. People, for whatever reason, who cannot seem to get along may open a FB group and then want more people to participate, so they harvest members from the original ROLL CALL. There have been actual disruptions encouraged on FB directed towards our ROLL CALLs.

We believe a ROLL CALL created on Cruise Critic should stay here. We've worked long and hard to create this community, and have provided a certain level of trust and privacy for our members. If they choose to participate in a FB Roll Call, they'll have to learn about it somewhere other than Cruise Critic.

We request that you not solicit people to your Facebook page on any of our ROLL CALLS.

This past cruise, I did not set up a CC group but did collect the names and info of the people on the tours I arranged. I didn't post them on CC or FB, but set up a group email and gave it to only these people. I also agree it isn't wise to post so much info about ourselves!

Of course, there are those who go on cruises who do not post on cruisecritic, but that is their problem. 🤣

Let's differentiate between roll calls and M&Gs.  I always join both RC's.  In this instance, I happened to start both of them, though that hasn't happened before.  While there is some overlap between the two, there are many more participants at the other place.  Why don't I dedicate myself to one or the other?  Because there might be valuable information in one place that doesn't make it to the other.

 

I don't participate in M&Gs, so whether NCL sanctions one, the other, or both is of no concern to me.  I don't love making small talk with a large number of people I really don't know, and if I DID want to meet up informally with one or two people from either group, there are plenty of available bars to do that.

Well in that case you really need to join more groups on more sites. Like you said, there might be valuable information on one site that doesn't make it to one you are on. It's the grass is greener theory for cruising.

there is an actual reason for not advertising that you’re away as if your home or business is broken into your insurance company may not pay out on the basis that you advertised your absence. 
 

I do join the Facebook groups but I do not post anything about my holiday on my personal page while I am away unless it’s for a good reason and even then I restrict those posts to family.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Just as there are those who drink Scotch (which I think tastes disgusting) and those who don't, or those who like to visit the Thermal Spa and those who hate them, there are those who enjoy sharing their pictures and status updates while on vacation, while others do not. Case in point: my wife never posts on Facebook when we go on vacation, because she doesn't want to (as you refer to it) "advertise" that we're away. Nothing wrong with that approach, but it isn't mine. Nothing says we all have to do it the same way.
