Teenagers causing damage to ship this week

Recommended Posts

I've been on my share of holiday cruises and seen lots of kids. Worst I typically see is a lot of energy and running around the ship or being loud and obnoxious. I've not seen property damage and that is unacceptable. And I also have seen obnoxious behavior while the kids are with the parents. Blows my mind...

@Eriksgarden, how did you learn they were thrown off and being billed for the damages?

It’s not one or two dysfunctional families anymore. It’s becoming way too common. I played in the casino again last night till about 1:30 in the morning. I went to get some pizza after and there were about 10 security officers on deck 4 because another group of kids got into it and trashed the area. It wasn’t a once or twice thing this week….

It was the talk among passengers.  Several teens caused real damages to elevators.  Others climbed artwork and damaged them.  It was far more than running, loudness, and just being kids.

We just came off Odyssey of the Seas.  The cruise was wonderful.  The service, amenities, crew were fantastic.  But what was NOT fantastic was the number of teens left to wander in groups and act like complete idiots by their parents.  Some kids vandalized the ship and they and their families were thrown off and will be billed for damages, but many more were not much better.  We saw it all and this is simply unacceptable.  The ships are not a playground nor a babysitter for horrible families that lack basic social skills and responsibility.  Sure, we encountered some great kids as well; mostly younger kids.

I started the other thread on this. It’s crazy what all happened on this sailing but seems like a lot of people think we are making it up.

I felt sorry for the crew and staff all week. Especially the bartenders in Playmakers. One guy was almost in tears but said if he complained he wouldn’t get promoted or could lose his contract. I ended up yelling at the kids myself and they went elsewhere that time.

We were not in the theater to see the group run through screaming and shoving people, but we did see the damage to the elevator and all the damaged artwork.  It's not surprising to me that some rush to discredit what happened.  I'm sure the parents of these kids do this to defend their parenting and justify the blinders they wear.

Sorry I should have used the sarcasm tag.  I recall the poster who refused to believe the story without hours of video footage and police reports.

I believe you Eriksgarden. I think that post might have been sarcasm?

I really feel for the crew members. Under 18s should have to wear bracelets with built in tech that cuts off the parents drink package if the kid is being obnoxious. Passengers can scan the kid with the app.

Having cruised with elderly and disabled family and friends, we have more often encountered families who have been helpful, teaching their kids who to hold the elevator door and that sort of thing. Maybe do an add a drink scan in the app too, or arcade credits.

Last night I heard kids running our hall singing loudly at 12:30/1am.  While mildly annoying, I get it.  But the disrespect of the ship and others is crazy.  I saw a child climb artwork with her parents looking on!

Thanks, I was just curious.

I for one have an inlaid wood table we got in Sorrento years ago. Every time we tell the story on how we got it, my wife raises the price🤣🤣

You have to adjust for inflation!

This is really sad to read this.  We encountered a lot of this on a 5 day Labor Day weekend cruise on Carnival from NYC last August.  Yes we were nuts for booking but we had to time it for 3 of our kids plus daughter's BF work and school schedule.  It was a double graduation present for 2020 HS graduation and my son's college graduation.  On the social media roll call, people were getting into fights online due to the reports of wild kids and the parents kept arguing hey they had 2 years of lock down, they are just letting off steam.  This was the Carnival Magic.  Multiple fights daily on pool deck, buffet, restaurants.  When I got up to go to get coffee around 5 one morning, the crew was cleaning up the ice cream fights from night before.  Kids ripped the tread barrier for the steps around pool deck that is used to prevent slipping.  Woman fell and I think broke an ankle.  Of course we had a great time but we wouldn't go near the pool deck.  My daughter said 2 people got in a fight in line for Guy's because the one parents kids cut in front of everyone.  There's more stories but it would take me a while to type.  Embarkation and Disembarking could have been made into a documentary on how not to behave in public.  And because I'm a glutton for punishment, I booked a 4 day Carnival in August out of Jacksonville.  Should be fun!

I've been on Carnival multiple times and never experienced what you are describing.  But that was before covid, so....it seems like the post-covid world is a different world.  I think I was naive in believing that there would be no long term damage.  We have our first Royal cruise on Allure this summer so we will see I guess.  Sad that people have to behave this way.

When on ships with the large Promenades and the beautiful classic/vintage cars on the floor, I cringe every time that I see kids crawling all over them and sometimes banging on them! It then becomes understandable when I see a parent leaning all over the car to have a picture moment! They used to have signs saying DO NOT TOUCH and sometimes even place a rope around them but anymore the cars are free standing. DH just tells me not to look but it still really bothers me. Is it just me?

Carnival recently issued an advisory to remind their guests to behave as result of an increase in disturbances.

It's not just you.  I do not understand why parents let their kids touch everything; often aggressively.  One lady once saw my dismay and quipped, "high fructose corn syrup".  I responded, "Is that what we're calling bad parenting these days?"  We laughed.  Then I saw the parent looking at us seething.  I smirked.

This reminded me that, when on Mariner last October, some pre-teens/teens were in Playmakers at the billiard table and started throwing the balls vs using the stick, and were even throwing them so that they bounced off of the table and on to the floor, not just once, multiple times. It got so bad that another adult stood up and told them to stop! The kids parents were sitting in there drinking and just laughed about it. Really???????

I think you will be okay. On the older ships, no matter what time of year, you usually don’t see too many kids on them. I have a couple of cruises on Grandeur in the next month. I am looking forward to a more relaxed, quieter cruise without too many kids.

Agree, Cruises I'm on 10-50 Kids at most. The 50 was crew bringing Family onboard end of a Repo where lot Senior Staff was ending their tour. Last fight I witnessed was 2016 and was between 2 Waiters. That was interesting!

When they started cash app and go fund me type sites.  They learn you don't have to actually work to earn money and you can just go begging strangers for it.

This is a great point. Unfortunately, it goes WAY beyond this. I was at a high school sporting event and listened to a 15yo girl bragging to several other teens about how much money she had made on OnlyFans (an 18+ adult site). Evidently, she had made enough to pay for a new car!!! There is just so much wrong with this situation and it all starts with the parents (or lack there-of).

Wow, you chose the wrong week to cruise.  We've always been fall cruisers, and you're reinforcing that choice.  We once sailed on Thanksgiving and definitely didn't enjoy the crowds ... seems like Spring Break is worse.

Why would anyone lie about this stuff?  Especially when other cruisers are on these boards and will likely collaborate.  These things also tend to show up on You Tube, though usually not until after the cruise.

We're talking about teenagers.  As a high school teacher, I can say this for certain:  Post-Covid high school is a very different place, and not different better.  Kids "lost a lot" in terms of seriousness towards academics, willingness to put in effort, willingness to abide by dress code, and general people skills.  I see kids who are genuinely confused by the concept of "be in the room when the bell rings, or you are tardy".  If I see it at school, I'm not surprised to hear that similar behaviors show up on vacations.

I often keep quiet in my classroom and listen to what kids say during transitions, etc.  I once heard a girl telling another how to get into prostitution /what a great job it is.  She wasn't joking.  I've taught several senior girls who worked as strippers.

And, yes, social media affects our teens.  When I started teaching, I saw lots of kids who thought they'd be in the NFL or be singers /rappers.  Today they want to be Influencers.

I have one 9th grader who tells me 9th grade is just too much work; he's going to drop out and go into music.  His grandmother says he has the best voice she's ever heard.  (Yeah, 'cause grandmothers are a reliable source on that topic.)  I asked him how he's going to get jobs, and he looked at me like I have two heads -- you just put a few songs on You Tube and wait for the checks to roll in!  I asked one of my fellow teachers, who is a successful working musician, to talk to him about the business end of that type of work.  The kid thinks that teacher is a liar.
