Club Royale - Masters is a joke, don't bother

This year was the first time I reached Masters level with Club Royale and was looking forward to some additional benefits. Club Royale first refused to honor the fact that I reached the points necessary and then after finding I had they only honored the status by putting it on the room card. I sailed in late April and was expecting the new benefits to be in place; onboard credit, carry-on bag drop off with delivery, welcome lunch with Chops menu, 2 device surf and stream - nope, none were honored. The crew acted like I was trying to steal something or was crazy when I asked about the carry-on bag option or the lunch. After multiple conversations with the casino host (too later for half the benefits) she finally got them applied on day 6 or 7 of the cruise. The casino host said she had a list of Masters players and I was not on it. Also, on previous cruises I have always received a bottle or two of wine from the casino but nothing on that cruise until after I mentioned it to the host. One the last full day of the cruise in the evening she had three bottles of wine delivered, not sure if she thought I would bathe in it or get plastered before leaving the ship.

Well, not the best start to the new program year but I though perhaps the offers which come in the mail would be a bit better reaching this new level. At Signature my offers were always for a mix of Junior Suite and Balcony staterooms. Now that I have achieved Masters my first offer was for short cruises with a mix of Balcony and Ocean View staterooms. My second offer was for $100 off of a European cruise. The first offer was bad and the second is an absolute joke. They have devalued the program to the point that any future cruises I have on Royal will not involve gambling any of my money, I'll save it for lines that actually value my business. Has anyone actually seen any value in Masters that I am somehow overlooking?

.

I made Masters by earning the 100,000 in 10 months.  But just like you, it was bumpy at first.  But it does get better.  And I like the benefits and treatment so much, they are incentives for me to requalify for next year.

@jtsongas I'm sharing my experiences with you, in hopes what I went through at first corrects it for you.

I learned that I made masters when I went to answer health questions the day before sailing on Odyssey OTS.  And that was too late to cancel The Key online.  This means having The Key logo and SUITE (since I was in a junior suite) meant I definitely did not have an issue with the embarkation process, checking my carry-on luggage or enjoying lunch.

While the app SeaPass showed Masters, the manifest downloaded to the ship from which SeaPass Cards waiting outside the room, showed me as Signature.  I never really looked at the card to see that, and it ended up aggravating a situation I'll mention in a minute.

Between Signature and The Key, I had 2 Devices for internet, which is the Masters benefit:  2 devices.

The first afternoon I inquired at the Guest Services line about a refund for The Key, and was told I needed to come back and see the C&A ambassador when she came on duty.  Of course she looked at me like I was crazy, since GS gave the wrong answer.  I knew to ask for the R&M Director who is responsible for The Key.  He was "in the know."  There was no hesitation in providing a full refund.  I took a moment to share with him the inconsistency of how disembarkation is treated on ships for The Key.  He told me that all I need to do is walk to the front of the line as disembarkation and show my card.  More on that in a minute.

There is a big difference between the Casino Host & Staff and the Casino Manager.  Probably on the second day, I handed my SeaPass (that I didn't realize said Signature) to a casino host staff member because I had a question about my Masters benefits.  She looked in her system and said I was Signature.  That's when I saw Signature on my card.  I went up to GS and they printed a new card that said Masters.  (I knew to do this since on another cruise where I made Diamond before that was updated for my next sailing, the C&A knew I was Diamond and told me go get a new card)

Now back to the Casino Host Staff, showing her Masters on card, she said her system still showed Signature and she would need to check.  I was lucky that the Casino Manager was close by.  I introduced myself and he knew my name.  He said he got an email, and yes I was Masters.  He spoke with the casino host staff and in short order the OBC was added to my account.

Another great benefit of Masters is full access to Coastal Kitchen.  I had dinner there the first night, and when I came for a lunch AFTER speaking with the Casino Manager, I was NOT on the list.  But the Maître 'd called down, got confirmation and wrote my cabin number in a column titled VIP.  I was welcomed every meal I decided to enjoy in CK.

I forgot a basic principal for casinos:  generally, if you're entitled to benefits, you know what they are and don't have to ask.  I'd bet 95% of players asking for benefits of a casino host are NOT entitled to them:  they gamble $20 and think they are entitled to the world.  Hyperbole, but true.  So that's why I got so much pushback initially from the host.

When the Casino Manager confirmed my status, I was able to go online and cancel The Key for my Oasis cruise which embarked the day after I returned from Odyssey.

My 2nd cruise on Oasis, showed Masters & Suite but not The Key since I canceled far enough in advance.  No problem for embarkation through the Suite line and terminal lounge.  But it didn't seem my name was on The Key list for luggage drop and lunch in the MDR.  They still allowed my to check my carry-on, and I went to the Coastal Kitchen where I showed my Masters status and was immediately seated.  (This may have happened without any questioning since the CK staff knows me from prior cruises.)

The casino manager was at the beginning of his contract, replacing the CM I'd spoken with on my previous two sailings in January and February.  I had a great conversation with him.  He explained that internally I still wasn't set up correctly.  He had touched bases with the Odyssey CM and got verification of my status.  He said that the CHost would work with shoreside casino opps to get it fixed.  My annual cruise offering was Signature.  And I had gotten an email congratulating me on making Signature for the new year.  She also offered to comp lunch in Chops on a sea day since I didn't get the MDR lunch on embarkation.  I declined and explained I enjoyed my CK lunch instead.  By the end of my cruise my offer was updated to the 1BR GrandSuite and --the most important benefit for you @jtsongas-- a landside casino host was assigned to me with direct phone number and email address.  I was told that I should call this person directly whenever I want to book an offer.

With the exception of the Comedy Show... Masters players DO NOT need to make reservations for entertainment shows.  First time:  "Do you have reservations?" "No," said with card in hand.  "The standby line..."  Me:  "Masters," as I handed her my card.  She scanned it, in her device, then said "go right in."  Disembarkation was slightly delayed as we hadn't been cleared when I walked pasted the walk-off line and around to a staff member at the front, handed her my card and said Masters.  She acknowledged me and asked me to wait with the walk-off suite guests.

As for the The Key list I wasn't on for embarkation lunch, it's because they have a separate VIP list I didn't know to ask them to look at.

I've had absolutely no issues when sailing on Freedom twice.  Speaking with the Casino Manager on Freedom confirms what I've concluded.  Some of the benefits are new, and there's still and education and communication process that hasn't made it to all the staff that should know.  Royal does value our business/play and they do treat us as VIP's.  There were 18 of us on my Oasis sailing.  Most casino managers make a point of checking in with their Masters players on board.

As for room amenities from the casino, there's always been a welcome item, sparkling wine or something else.  But after that, it's the ole "what have you done for me lately?"  As an example, I was just on a family cruise for Mother's Day weekend.  As a result, I played very little, earning only 1,500 points on the 3 day cruise.  I didn't get another bottle of wine, and I was perfectly fine with that decision.

As for your online casino offers, that too, is "what have you done for me lately?"  And it seems there's a delay of a month or two.  If you track your play by cruise (points earned)  you may see this pattern.  Last November I took a few short cruises with others, meaning I couldn't play as much.  A month or two later, my offers dropped to oceanview from mostly JS.  Pick up your play, and the offers are better.  But since I haven't been with Royal for even a year, I'm just guessing that time of year impacts inventory and offers:  there aren't as many ships in the USA during the summer.

Hope this helps.  And for those that envy the benefits, they can be yours too.  Just earn the points.

I have to share one final thing to support my statement above.  More than 10 years ago a local South Florida casino (not The Isle) had a very, very popular buffet in a small space.  The line wait was a good 45 minutes to an hour.  So you can imagine the frustration from someone near the front of the line who saw me walk up to the cashier to pay (comp) and be seated.  Him:  "There's a line!  What do you think you're some VEEE--IIIII----PEEE or something?"  Me said nicely:  "Well, yes.  The casino thinks so, and that's why they gave me this card, and I'm allowed to walk right up.  /They'll give you one too.  You just have to play enough."

@PWP-001 Thank you for the information, hopefully they will start to get things sorted. I still have little hope for the program given that you get the status from April to April and they have already "wasted" two months of it for me. Honestly the advertised benefits are not what I was after when gambling as I get many with Pinnacle but I was hoping for some better cruise offers but that doesn't seem to be the case. Hopefully, as you suggested, perhaps they will improve but I am not going to put in the same level of play with them going forward. I gave them increased play for a year and expect to receive offers commensurate with previous play rather than future play. If I pay the lease payments for a Cadillac and receive a Kia, I won't continue paying lease payments for a Cadillac in hopes they will upgrade me to the Cadillac.

I’m also a budgeter (is that a word 😁) and keep track of expenses…. I always have.

I could figure out how much we’ve spent so far, but I wouldn’t want DH to know.  🤫

And I know where our money comes from, and the answer to where it needs to go next is simple CRUISES. 😁

I can see how having Pinnacle status gives you, rightfully, a different value perception.  When I came on board 10 months ago, I had zero status, having only sailed on a two night-er, when a local casino introduced me to Royal last August.  I've hit D+, and should hit 400 points over the next 12 months, based upon my confirmed bookings.  So I'll need another year of Masters and cruises to hit the 700 points needed for P.  This next statement will probably rattle many P's, but I do think that --without any disrespect for what P's have accomplished-- in Royal's eyes Masters trumps Pinnacle.

Masters benefits expire at the end of March every year, and can only be extended through requalification.  But as a CM told me:  "you don't have to play one more dollar in the casino and you will still get your benefits."  They won't take them away, but they will go away after March.

As for offers, I was only Signature for most of my 10 months, and during that time I believe my play caused my offers to increase to Junior Suites... and that's without Master status.  I would think you were being offered JS (or higher) when you were sailing and posting the large point gains per cruise needed to hit 100K.

It's the same I found at local casinos.  There's a list of published benefits for their Elite tier, and that's earned through high play.  But then there's other benefits not listed that are by invitation, such as VIP Dinners, tickets to concerts, etc.  I personally found that when I dropped my play, those invites didn't come.

Good luck with whatever you decide is right for you.  I hope you get yours sorted out so you can enjoy the benefits you want while you have them.

House is paid off; pay cash for our cars, $0 debt (only use one CC and pay it off every month), so other than utilities, taxes, food, beer, and cruises we don't have a lot of places or things that require any of our $$ any more.😇

Since we always do B2B or longer cruises, the 3 bottles we get on every cruise usually hold us over until the next cruise. Haven't been to Total Wine since we made Pin🍷

That’s an awesome place to be. I’m doing my best to get there myself in the next 10 years (or hopefully sooner) so I can enjoy my retirement and plenty of post-retirement cruises!

We always bring our 2 bottles home, but we must drink more wine than you.😉

On a B2B do you get 3 bottles for each one?

It's for casino users.  You get 1 point for every $5 wagered. for OP to get 100,000 points he had to have wagered $500,000.🤨  Hope he won at least a healthy portion of that back.

The math for this is never right.    I have reached prime (2500 points) for $1000 +/- cash out of pocket.   In my opinion, that $1000 +/- has been well worth it.    Free cocktails in casino plus numerous free cruises via various offers throughout the year and 20% off internet helps too!    We even had a free comped JS on Oasis last year.

I track what the average cost is for all of the cruises we have taken since we started cruising 40 years ago broken down by decade, by year, by cabin category, and by cruise line. When we get on board and book our next cruises, we use that data to determine how many cruises we can book, when they can be scheduled so they fit in the budget, and what types of accommodations we can book within that framework.

I just book what catches my eye 🤣

Rarely book onboard though. It's always a painful experience.  Much more relaxed at home with data at 'my' fingers

But you do grab a nextcruise thru the app I hope? You get the bonus but don't have to deal with the onboard part. You reference the reservation once you have all the data and are ready to book.

Typically, yes, although every so often a mystery bottle of champagne shows up as well. Usually drink one bottle during the cruise and bring the rest home (DW doesn’t drink wine)

Always have the data in hand when we board, and visit the NextCruise desk early each week when they are not busy. We can usually book 6 cruises in less than 15 minutes.

No interest. Spur of the moment decision

But with the UWC coming up, really not even looking anymore.

That is what we do. When I have tried to book at the desk, it has always been a nightmare.  I love the option of paying the deposit via the app and they calling later.

My objection to booking onboard with NC is that the NC staff are SO inconsistent with the booking “rules “.  Sometimes I am able to upgrade when I book, sometimes I have to wait and upgrade later by phone; sometimes I can put my TA info on the booking and sometimes I have to wait and move the booking over to the TA later, by phone.  I just wish I could do it ALL at once and not have to call, later.

For the past 2 cruises I just did one of those "pick later" next cruise offer and you can do it right from the app and not even go to the next cruise desk and talk to anyone. Your credit card is charged $200 and you get the email from cruise next with the empty booking number within about 12-24 hours of signing up on the app onboard. All Casino Royal needs is that next cruise open booking number and you can call or email Casino Royal when you get home and use whatever certificate you earned and do your upgrade all at once. You will get the OBC from next cruise applied and free play if that is part of the certificate you earn. I also have a landside casino host assigned to me and he does it all by email and is super efficient and gave multiple upgrade options to compare.

The reason (at least for us) that we don't take advantage of the "pick later" option in the app is that we always book B2B or longer consecutive cruises and want to insure we get the same suite on all of the legs. Doing a "pick later" reservation puts getting the same suite on all of the legs at risk.

Husband has been masters for several yrs. He was surprised when he first got to that level, as he plays the same not very high. I reminded him that because we go often within the year, his points add up (as it is the earned points for the whole year). We also do Princess & Carnival, but they rate only on the single cruise.

But before covid, masters had extra benefits & special cruises. (They are just starting to add special cruises again). One great Xmas gift sent with a card was a free cabana on our next time we were at Coco Cay (after it had just opened).

We were allowed coastal kitchen, suite lounge, & suite sundeck-but the latter 2 not after covid. But then they put in the OBC instead,  (&  at the beginning the $2,500 free art, which only lasted 1 month!)
