When do we apply for Nexus renewal?

You must declare all goods purchased and gifts received.  Each product is being imported into Canada whether an exemption applies or not.

How do you "...declare all goods purchased and gifts received" when you use a kiosk, do not talk to a human and are not asked by the NEXUS "process" whether you have something to declare?

There are no questions at the eGates at Pearson. Just scan and go.  If you have something to declare above your exemption, you do it after the eGate.

The focus of my response was with regard to the above.  Land borders still require the full declaration.

Sorry, I'm not following. You said you must DECLARE EVERYTHING, yet you say "Just scan and go" which is not explicitly declaring. Can you please clarify.

Apologies.  I think the lack of clarity is because we’re at cross-purposes. A poster said that her sister had her pass revoked due to not declaring the beer in her car.  This means she was at a land border.  Both you and CDNPolar asked if she hadn’t declared over her allowance.  Since she was at a land border, I responded that everything must be declared whether she was over her allowance or not.

The eGates at the airport have a different process.

Hopefully, I have made things clearer and haven’t muddied the waters further.  😂

As a general comment, I think that there is some minor confusion with respect to exact reporting requirements today, brought about by the introduction of new programs (e.g. Nexus), new technologies (kiosks), different approaches depending upon means of entry (flight, drive, boat [with variations: pleasure, ferry, cruise], bus, train) and the reduced requirement for completing a Declaration Card. Unfortunately, CBSA has yet to compile a single, comprehensive website that would enable someone to quickly determine what is expected of them given a combination of factors.

Yes - this is what is confusing.

I think that in respect to the confusion on this discussion it is because the first part of the discussion was about a land border.  I have never used my Nexus at a land border so I am not up on the rules.

I think that the discussion got further confused because then the airport arrival got brought into the discussion, because at the Kiosk, there is not even a question any more.

I know my allowable duty free limits, and have always been under the impression that as long as I am under or at these limits, and arriving in Canada by air, that I did not have to make a declaration because I was uncer or at my allowable.

Now, if a Canadian Customs Agent asked me are you bringing anything back, I would say "Yes, and it consists of this and that" and all would be good.  If I knew that I was over my allowable limit then I would tell them that without their asking, because even if you get past this individual without declaring you risk the pull off to secondary inspection once you have your luggage and then here if you are found to be over your limit and not declared, this is when you can get into trouble with your Nexus.

I have been pulled off before and had liquor and gifts but within my limits and all was ok.

I have also declared at the immigration agent being over limit on liquor, and at the point of leaving the luggage hall had the agent there ask what I was over with, and I stated 2 bottles of liquor vs. the one allowed, and he said carry on and did not pull me in.

I think the whole point of what I am asking / suggesting here is that if you are within your limits and the agent asks no questions, you don't have to volunteer any information.

If the agent asks "are you bringing anything into Canada" then I believe that in your limit or outside of your limit you must declare.

Not a renewal, new application. I applied in June 2023, got approved in April. Did my interview at a land boarder May 2nd and got my card today.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got my card in the mail last week, about 10 days after being notified I had been Approved; approx. eight and a half months from application to new card being put in wallet. Hopefully I'm the last of the folks who got caught up in whatever the heck big delay happened last Fall!

Interesting that you say you were notified. SWMBO submitted her renewal application in early April, and we only found out she had been approved when we checked the status on the website and saw the approval letter dated 21 May. No formal approval notification had been sent. Thanks for the heads up on the 10 days, looks like we should be receiving it on the next few days.

First time I've actually been notified about being Approved by email - initial application and first renewal I heard nothing, my card just appeared in the mail - but my wife has always had emails at every stage of all her interactions with the program. Hers was also about ten days - but maybe yours will take longer if they have to find someone to retype the cover letter in French first 😉

DH and I are planning international trips in Jan and May. His nexus expires in January and mine in May. Should we begin renewal applications now or wait? How long is turnaround? Anyone have any recent experience receiving new cards post Covid?

My Nexus expired the beginning of May. I got a notification for renewal over  6 months ago and just got notification that it was approved (without an interview, thankfully). Still awaiting new card. This is my second renewal and definitely took more time than the last time.

💖Love my NEXUS card.💖 I was in FLL/USA  when my cruise was cut short bc of COVID. 😷   I lost my passport.😱 I never keep my passport & NEXUS card in the same place. I remembered taking it out & getting everything else ready to pay the taxi driver and last thing I remember was heading inside the airport. Standing in line to get checked in. I started to look for my passport & NOTHING! Got out of line and checked/searched again and again. Still NOTHING!.  My heart started racing (panic mode) started to kick in. I only ever used my NEXUS card to expedite through the big lineups at the airport.  I heard whispers of being able to use it for AIR/SEA & LAND and stories of it being used as a passport as well for US-CAN border.  I never used it that way bc honestly I was not sure and I felt better using my passport as my usual document to go from CAN to US and US to CAN.  I opened my wallet and saw my NEXUS card took out and thought lets put this to the test.  Heart pounding I get back in line. My turn comes up the airline assistant asks me for my passport.  I replied that I lost my passport.  Then I said may I use my NEXUS card instead. She says to me let me see your (NEXUS card) I gave it to her she scans it and says no problem. I will enter in the NEXUS card information and print you out your boarding passes. I am thinking to my self (HOLY SH*T) It really does work that way!!

Service Canada Agent advised me to apply for a new passport. Then login and update the new passport info on the NEXUS website  He said if you report your passport lost or stolen it  would cancel the NEXUS card and you would have to re-apply for a new one.  This was no brainer I applied for a new passport.  Did exactly what he said and no issues. Come renewal time I just paid and then they sent me my new NEXUS card and I activated it on line. Everything is still golden!! 😉

Let me share my current ongoing experience with the Nexus renewal process to show how varied one's experience can be.  Two people same household renewing ... I submitted online for both the same day literally one after the other.  Neither had any changes (ie address) within the five years so I anticipated and hoped no interview required.

Applicant 1 & 2 application date:  Jan 4, 2024

Applicant 1: Still pending review (March 22 as I write this).

Applicant 2:  Approval notification March 1, 2024 (no interview required)

Applicant 2:  Card received in mail March 8, 2024 😲

Interesting that the one I submitted first is the one still pending; clearly it's so random you can't rely on any experiences reported by others.

I have nothing booked so I'm not anxiously awaiting a new card so it's more interesting observation of processing times.  I'm also good knowing the current card is good until the new one is processed.

..

Okay ...updating 6 months later.

Applicant 1:  Approval notification today June 9 2024 (also no interview required) Now waiting for the card ... Yay !!

So in the end it was around 3 months difference between the processing of the two I submitted within minutes for the same household.

All good but interesting how varied it can be.  Good luck to everyone and happy travels.

Wife applied for her renewal in early April.  Letter of Approval was posted to the website 21 May, but not sent by Email or snail mail. No interview required. New card arrived in the mail 5 June, so start to finish the entire renewal process took 2 months.
