T-burg 19 Posted May 3, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Are there any ships that do not allow smoking or only smoking in certain areas? Just returned from the Carnival Triumph and you were allowed to smoke everywhere. Being a none smoker this was very unpleasant and annoying at times. kitty9 Posted May 3, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Oceania is the only line that greatly restricts smoking---they don't even allow smoking in your cabin. As for other lines, it's mostly no smoking in the dining room, main show theater and the buffet areas. It can be tough for non-smokers, but there are places for us to enjoy non-smoking areas. Stay away from the casino and bars, and you should be OK.

newmexicoNita Posted May 3, 2007 #6 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Isn't this smoking thing being overdone? It used to be a subject every montho or so and now it seems daily. To answer the question, even on Carnival, of course there are smoking and non smoking areas. I don't think even Costa allows smoking in the dining rooms or showrooms. HAL has certain nights that are non smoking in the casinos and I think all lines hava adopted "no smoking" on one side of the pool area. I am not going to pretend it is always inforced, but it is a policy. Yes, so far, Oceania is the only line to really adopt a strong non smoking policy, I would guess in the next 5 to 10 years we will see more and more lines controlling the smoking. To hope for totally non smoking is unrealistic for the next decade or so. The most important thing remains: smokers need to be considerate of the non smokers and non smokers need to understand life does not revolve among around them and their disapproval of smoke. The most important thing remains: smokers need to be considerate of the non smokers and non smokers need to understand life does not revolve among around them and their disapproval of smoke. NMnita I think in the minds of non-smokers it does revolve around them and their desire to not have to experience the smoke. While it is nice to think we can all get along, non-smokers are exerting their majority in the form of legislation not only in the US, but all over the world. Unfortunately for smokers, their world in which they can smoke is getting smaller, and will probably continue to get that way. What you see on forums like this is that voice that continues to want to make their smoking realm smaller.

Cotton Posted May 3, 2007 #14 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Just returned from the Carnival Triumph and you were allowed to smoke everywhere.. Oh good grief...! If you just returned from a Carnival cruise, you KNOW good and well smoking is NOT allowed in any dining venue or the main showlounge, as well as some of the other lounges. Also, not allowed on the inside promenades or one side of the open decks...smoking on port side only. Why in the world would you say something that is totally false??? Methinks some people just like to stir up trouble wherever they go! Probably the same ones who start posts about jeans in the dining room, or not wanting to dress for formal nights....and silly us - we buy into it everytime. I say we should just start boycotting those controversial threads that nobody will ever agree on. They stir up conflict like I stir my sweet tea on a hot summer day. If we don't post to them...maybe they will go away. Let's keep these boards for what they should be: Information, reviews, planning, and other good stuff involved with cruising. There is enough controversary shown every day on the TV news, I don't want to see it all over these boards too.

As has been pointed out by another post-some of this stuff probally comes from people who have never cruised. Carnival is the line that gets a bad rap overall so possibly this person just made this up and decided to say Carnival. It fits in with the image they have been given from this messegeboard. kathyanddick Posted May 3, 2007 #18 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Carnival had the Carnival Paradise, which was built non-smoking and absolutely no smoking allowed any where on the ship. That didn't last too long. About 6 or 7 years or so. They gave it a try, but then had to relent and change their policy. They could not sell groups on that ship. How many groups do you know that would ALL be nonsmokers? The old Renaissance ships were nonsmoking. They went out of business. Now that some of the hotel chains are going totally non-smoking, I wonder how long that will last. My traveling companions for our trip next year on RCCL are staying at the Courtyard Mariott in San Juan the night before. When some of them found out it is totally nonsmoking, they want to stay somewhere else. You are never going to please everyone, so some have to make a concession. Usually it is the smokers who have to concede. The nonsmokers rule!!!

I have been posting on a smoke related thread elsewhere on the boards, so this one attracted my eye. I read it though, and a fact caught my attention. There were at my time of posting about 22 prior posts. Apart from the original poster, only one other poster, Momofmeg, was I believe a non smoker. She posted 3 times, and only one of her posts was anti smoking. Every other post , sample pieces of which are posted above, are complaints about smoking threads , non smokers, and how fed up smokers are about smoking threads !! Read it thro. guys.....it is just you , preaching to yourselves...there is hardly a non smoker posting out of 23 posts. It is certainly smokers complaining about anti smoking threads keeping this one alive !!

Read it thro. guys.....it is just you , preaching to yourselves...there is hardly a non smoker posting out of 23 posts. It is certainly smokers complaining about anti smoking threads keeping this one alive !! Well I make three :) And I guarantee you I'd easily win the battle of "least tolerant" amongst us. But I've restrained from volunteering my OPINIONS of smokers and smoking in any of the threads (including the one I started over on the RCL board) because I've been actually trying to get some factual information about smoking on board ships I've not cruised on before since I am being forced to go on a cruise later this summer. (Yes, forced) I gave up cruising when the Paradise switched (and a single ship running the exact same itinerary for seven years with a full boat discounts or not is a "failure?" How, exactly other than mismanagement?) But it IS troubling that the pro-smoker people do seem to believe in shouting down, ridiculing, belittling, and generally downplaying the impact their smoking has. When a smoker tells me that "you'll never notice it" I think "no, YOU would never notice it, I have to roll up my windows and put my A/C on recycle when the car three in front of me has a smoker in it on the highway") And if they didn't take the bait and argue back, the threads would die wouldn't they? The real problem, though, is that the cruise lines themselves lie or make it hard to find out the smoking situation for a nonsmoker. Or a smoker for that matter, but I'm thinking it's enough for a smoker to know it IS allowed on board, but *I* need to see it laid out specifically. WHY can't I get a deck chart that shows where smoking is allowed and not on the Mariner of the Seas? Why only the vague "it's allowed in 'some' lounges?" WHY did RCL customer support flat out lie and say that smoking wasn't permitted in cabins, or in the Casino on board Freedom or Liberty? I didn't believe him when he said it and came here to get the straight dope, but I still haven't been able to get specific data because bringing up smoking here devolves into a "smokers are stupid"/"too bad, it's my right so watch as I blow smoke in your face" argument. Stopping smoking threads isn't the answer -- killing "you're a jerk/idiot/etc" posts might help though. But it's a legit topic for people with health issues and noses that still function. Like mine. MJ25 Posted May 6, 2007 #25 Share Posted May 6, 2007 I was on the same Triumph cruise that T-Bird 19 was on and what they posted was pretty factual. While it is true that the dinning rooms, eating areas and main show lounge where smoke free, smoking was allowed in every other bar and lounge on the Triumph. Even though one lounge was designated the "cigar" lounge people were smoking cigars in the casino. I personally was sitting at the New World bar next to the casino when a lady next to me lite up. She had a no smoking placard right in front of her on the bar at the time. When the bartender came over he did not ask her to obey the placard, he gave her an ashtray instead. I was a smoker for 20+ years and am around smokers and smoking all the time. It does not bother me at all. Sure I don't like the way my clothes smell the morning after a night out with smokers, but I accept it. I also have friends and family members who can NOT endure smoke. It is not that they do not like it, but rather that for health reasons they can not tolerate it. JBSmith has a valid point. The cruise lines should be able to show what areas are smoking and what are non smoking prior to boarding the ship and then enforce these rules. Telling a non smoker to stay out of the lounges where smoking is allowed is not a viable answer either. If a ship has 10 bars and lounges and smoking is allowed in 7 of them, then they have been deprived of 75% of the nightlife on board! By these standards should non smokers cruise for less than smokers? Why should smokers pay the same for their cruise and recieve access to 100% of the ship while non smokers or those who can not tolerate smoke can only enjoy a reduced portion of the cruise? No one is saying, at least I am not, that they should ban smoking on the ships. I am saying that the lounges and bars that allow smoking should be the minority. Most smokers I know, and I was one of them, do not insist on being allowed to smoke everywhere, just that they have someplace that they can go and partake in their vice, habit, whatever you want to call it without being bothered and without bothering others. That is how we will all get along. IMHO. Fins Up!
