Change to RCI smoking policy - effective today

Interestingly, the answer to this question seems to depend on whether you're asking a smoker or a non-smoker. :o

Illinois just went smoke free January 1st. I went bar hopping with some friends this past Saturday night (the first Saturday sine the ban). We visited five bars and two of the five were more packed than I had ever seen and two others were as packed as typical for a Saturday. The only bar that wasn't crowded was the one we went to first, so it probably was just too early in the evening for that bar. Looks like Chicago will skip that initial dip in revenues and go right to the increased profit phase.

Where You Can Smoke: Beginning January 2008, smoking is permitted only on cabin balconies, on the starboard side of open decks and in the designated smoking areas of public rooms.

 

Where You Can't: With the adoption of the new smoking policy, smoking will be prohibited in all cabins (except on balconies) and in one public room on each ship. In addition, as always, dining areas and show lounges will be non-smoking, along with the port side of open decks.

 

Any passenger caught smoking in a cabin will be charged a $250 penalty. The new smoking policy will not be enacted until the summer 2008 season on Legend of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas.

we have a place in delaware....our neighbor is a manager at a well known pizza place....she told us that the business is not the same as it was before the smoking ban.....they are still doing good but not the same.....

 

 

I guess it would depend of the quality of the food.There are places we are going to frequent after Marylands ban takes effect Feb 1 that have great food but the smoke is unbearable at times and there are other places that are just average and while we may be more inclined to visit them we may not

My DH and I are smokers as well, but when the smoking ban went into affect in Cheyenne WY alot of bars lost alot of business. The ban was only in the city, if you are in the county then the bars can have smoking areas. There is one bar only about 2 miles from our house and it is always crowded. And if you guest it, it is in the county so smoking is permitted.

I understand how non smokers want and need to have their rights to have a smoke free area, but I feel that smokers have rights that are being ignored now. We are booked on Rhapsody of the Seas for June 20th and we have a balcony cabin. We will be smoking on the balcony anytime we are in our cabin. So if you are booked on this cruise as well, we will be in cabin 7056. Just an FYI. We paid a lot of money for this cabin and booked it before the smoking ban was even annouced, so to us this is a smoking area and we will use it anytime we wish too. I am sorry if this offends anyone.

There are really a couple of different sides to the non-smoking people here.

There are those who are just offended by smoking and there are those who are actually made sick by smoke. I am one in the latter pool. Whenever I am around much smoke at all I actually get sick. My asthma triggers in and I am ill. It is not a fun feeling to literally not be able to breathe.

Although I live close to many casinos and am very close to Las Vegas, I cannot recall the last time I set foot inside a casino because of the smoke. I do not visit them on the ships I sail on, I also do not visit the bar areas because of smoking. This just isn't about being offended for many of us, it is about health.

As long as your smoking does not inconvenience others, I do not see any problem.

I quit right after the new year when Illinois went smoke free. I don't want to stand outside to smoke. It was below zero last night. At about 4 bucks a pack quiting is a nice way to pay for my cruise.

Congrats, Here in NY it is 5+ a pack and I quit over 3months ago. I have been putting the money in an envelope every day.

I live in Florida, I'm in the resort business. The law has been in effect for many years now and while it affected business in restaurants AT FIRST it no longer does. Most restaurants here take advantage of the warm Florida weather and have some sort of outdoor serving area for those who just can't give up smoking while eating, but otherwise they have a few chairs outside so that people can go out and have a smoke when they want to. The poster who stated that the ban had any kind of long lasting affect on the actual $$ spent in restaurants in this state is mistaken. I do know cause I'm in the business. The change caused a momentary blip on the business and that's all. REALLY as an ex smoker of 3 packs a day I can't imagine that it's all that difficult to get through a meal without having a cigarette. I did it all the time because I didn't want to offend those I was with and was fine. This is good for everyone EVEN the smokers who might, because of this, smoke a few less when they go out.

I'm sorry to say, with all due respect-if anyone is worried about health issues, therer are many cruise line more restrictive the RC. I was reading the article right here on cruise critic and was surprised that although there is no smoke free cruise line at all, some are much more restrictive then RC.

Florida must be an exception. .In Delaware revenues are UP substanially since the smoking ban especially during football games which is the case in nearly all states that have implemented a ban.We can go out and watch games without inhaling second hand smoke.Maryland's long awaited ban starts Feb 1st and we are looking forward to enjoying evenings out at the nearby pubs.Sounds as though your roads may be safer if patrons are drinking less.

I am happy to annunce the Chicago bars seem to be doing extremely well since the smoking ban began a few weeks ago. Every time I have been out the bars have been jam-packed. In the past my friends and I would go to someone's condo to watch football so as to avoid the smoke. Now we get a big group together and meet up at the bars. Had about 30 people today and most of would not have been to a bar for watching football prior to the ban. Also have noticed a lot more people going to bars to eat whereas they never would have prior to the ban. Nice to see.

I can say for myself that I am not perfect... but if I want to sit out on my balcony by myself and eat 10 plates of food from the buffet or drink 20 shots of booze then that would be harming me only... not the person on the adjacent balcony.

There IS a difference.
